Strange marks on IHS of new 8600k (from Ocuk)?

OEM = original equipment manufacturer. Not sold, returned for resale. All parts should be pristine, ex factory and if necessary packaged individually for resale.

Yes - I'm talking about the real world implications. I've not bought many CPUs from OcUK lately but I've installed 20+ in batches bought from elsewhere for various reasons and its quite blatant that some places have a good proportion of returns (or possibly tested/binned for overclocked systems, etc.) in their OEM stock (in these cases it isn't really a big deal aslong as they are undamaged as they'll only ever be run at stock, etc.).

First of 8 Pack or no one at OcUK bins 8600K, we don't offer them pre-tested and have no intentions to do so, simply as 8700K is too time consuming for us.

Second returns have instructions from me any CPU returned used has to be b-graded and sold in b-grade below cost to clear it. As such its either come to OcUK in this state and not being spotted by the booking in person or its being damage in our warehouse and not noticed, either way I have made our returns manager aware of this thread and how critical it is that any CPU returned from customer used gets b-graded.

Back to our binning process.

All the OEM chips we do bin, go in a bin, by that I mean they will go in their speed bin right down to the lowest stable clock grade, as such they are sold as binned. Any surplus are kept aside for our none overclocked system builds, they never find there way back in our warehouse. 8 Pack is aware of this rule and follows it, hence we now have a new 4.9GHz 8700k SKU on our website for the ones that failed to achieve 5.0GHz using our testing parameters.

Retail chips are sealed, we very rarely test retail, if we do, its the same as OEM process, the chips tested go into their relevant binning grade.

As such the retail and OEM chips on the site you can buy, are un-tested, certainly by 8 Pack anyway as the CPU's he takes are go into grades and right now were only grading 8700K and those take all his time due to how popular they are.

As such my only explanation here is that either for whatever reason our SI department have used one and returned to stock, or a return from customer has being put back as new stock, both of which should not be happening and as such you have my apologies on that. This thread has being sent to management to ensure it does not happen again assuming it was OcUK and not come to us in this state and not being spotted by our booking in team which i can understand as they will book in around 1000+ CPU's at a time so they do visually inspect them close up and as such mistakes can happen.

Luckily i saw the thread and checked it for damage (i did peak when it arrived but didnt look at it as it was upside down and didnt want to remove it) and found it.

If it was next week when i was about to build it i may have been more :( eitherway accidents happen and hopefully the next one is fine

As to the comments about binning that is more because seeing multiple cpus that look used really looks suspicious (which i am sure you get) but in 1000's of cpu's going in and out i suppose mistakes happen. :p

UPDATE!

I've informed the relevant managers who ensure me what I say is already being actioned.

The first case: They are finger prints on the CPU, unfortunately it seems either our warehouse or Intel/Distributor handled them without gloves. Our guys normally wear gloves when booking in OEM CPU's to prevent this, we shall make sure this is being upheld.

The second case: As I already said, looks like it was either damaged in transit to us and not noticed, or damaged by ourselves and not noticed.

But both cases are clearly not a CPU that has being used, just unfortunately miss handled.

I can't recall the last OE CPU I bought from anywhere didn't have some form of mark on it, personally. And I see quite a few!

I can understand the need when buying new to want to have it pristine, but speaking personally and no apportion to blame...it really doesn't matter...

Machining marks, which can even resemble what looks like marks from a heatsink aren't uncommon on a completely new CPU. Things like fingerprints, remnants of thermal paste, etc. shouldn't be present.

So the process of swapping for a new one has now begun!

Hopefully it will go well and thank you for the responce/customer service :)

They come on a tray, akin to eggs. If I found a finger print on an egg shell, I wouldn't raise my eyebrows! It's not ideal, and I'm not saying people are in the wrong for complaining - but the bloody things come exposed to the elements. Be a little realistic. Or buy retail boxed, of course.

Just my 2 cents, everyone has their own sensibilities.

I was meaning more like finger prints like in the first image - but in theory anyone handling CPUs in this context should be wearing gloves.

I don't buy that they're machining marks they do not look at all consistent or fine enough for that i'll get a picture with the SLR in daytime tomorrow. I've never seen an IHS like that, it alarmed me as soon as I opened the box.
Still I feel it's in unacceptable condition and glad with OCUK's response.

Q: Do you have to receive the returned CPU before shipping a new one out as was hoping to get started on this build this week?

There is no way those are finger prints unless i need my eyes testing. looks a bit scratched?

Can't knock Gibbo / baileys insta-involvement.

Quality assurance on OEM didnt hit the mark here.

How are these OEM chips shipped/stored? That first one looks like the remains of that cheap brown packing tape when you remove it and it leaves half of it on whatever is was stuck to. Then maybe had something placed on top of it with a pattern like the bottom of a box/carton/tray.

Could be a boot or shoe print. Would explain the regular pattern and dirt.

Larger bubble wrap + condensation + dirt?

Doesn't look like any heatsink though.

Since it is OEM I'd think nothing of it tbh as long as it worked. Although given the price I guess it you might place higher standards.

@Gibbo @Bailey as always, clear, concise and honest feedback. All the more reason to shop at OcUK.

We are always here to help :)

If you need anything you know where we are :)

All the best

Properly confused, get up and go to get the CPU to pack it to return and it looks completely different today?! I have not done anything whatsoever to it.

Photos with SONY NEX-5N (mirrorless APS-C)

Only brightness/exposure adjusted. The blobs and scratches are practically invisible today. The wording is also far clearer today.
I don't know if it's temperature dependent as the heating was not yet in it's stride so the house was cooler.
Anyway some crops:
