January Transfer Window 2017/18

I’m not saying it was a good season for us, but it was better than theirs, because theirs wasn’t good at all. I don’t think the roles will have reversed, but it’s not impossible, as you say.

City and Pep have actually won nothing yet, and people are talking as if they are an unstoppable force for years to come. Man Utd and Chelsea both have the capability to match and even surpass them (maybe Liverpool too).

I am pretty much always critical of the team and the manager, but let’s not get too carried away in the opposite direction either (though I appreciate that’s difficult for you).

Just look at Madrid they were a powerhouse just 6 months ago. Amazing how quickly things can change. You only have to look back in history to 1996 when Kevin Keagan threw away a 12 point lead!

If mikataryan comes to us in exchange for sanchez and we get aubameyang then id say thats a very good transfer window and going forward we are better off than if we had sanchez

Ultimately time will tell, I see it as a side step personally. I like Auba but theres no way to tell how he's going to do over here and Mikhi has been awful.

People are raving about City because they're on course to pick up over 100 points this season which is quite frankly outrageous - it's a big statement to say anybody could match or surpass what they're currently doing. The hope is got to be that City can't continue to perform like this and while anything is possible, this doesn't look like a side that's about to fall off a cliff. I'm as surprised as anybody at Real's decline but they were a side full of players playing at their peak and full of egos*. This is a fairly young City side with a number of players having either not yet reached or only just reached their peak years.

*Another transfer window and Ronaldo wants another new contract. I'd love to know just how many contracts Ronaldo's signed since joining Real, it feels like he gets a new one every year. This is the sort of thing I'm sure City want to avoid and might be why they're unwilling to massively increase their offer for Sanchez. They're reported to be opening talks with KDB over a new deal - can you imagine how they'd go if they were paying Sanchez £400k per week? Equally what would Sterling, Sane and Jesus be thinking if City paid Sanchez, a player they've all massively out performed of late, double what they're getting?

I do like the look of Aubameyang, but it seems to me that he could be the same disruptive dressing room influence that Sanchez is.

I'm a bit lost with Arsenal at the moment, accept we need to lose Sanchez and I'd love to see Mkhitaryan come in, but we still need so much more.

I dont think they would reach 100 points. Did pep's barcelona side manage that?

Exactly, you can understand those sort of figures if you get him on a free like when Sol Campbell moved from Spurs and got much higher wages 400k plus 35million and 5 to his agent. That's pants pulled down time and will create issues with other players. Plus he clearly would have preferred City.

So prefers City.
Is 29.
400K per week
35 million to Arsenal
5 million to his agent

United shouldn't be that desperate. Just because you can afford it doesn't mean you should act like a bunch of dumb ****s. Wait 6 months and get him for 400k and none of the add ons, if he would then rather take another destination so what he hardly has a stand out attitude.

The wages Sanchez would get at United seem to be somewhere around £350k-400k, depending on which source you look at. The concern for me is that it's setting a precedent for future signings to demand similarly monstrous wages and that other members of the squad will start demanding increased wages. It's one thing to pay Ibra £370k per week when he has no transfer fee at all, it's another thing to have to pay a transfer fee (albeit a small one by United's standards) and then also pay such big wages. I believe that Pogba is currently our highest earner on £290k per week, with Lukaku and De Gea on £250k and £200k respectively being our next highest earners, so Sanchez would come in and immediately be earning quite a lot more. Ultimately though I think he'd be a really good signing for United, he'd add something different to the squad and is the kind of player we've been lacking for a long time.

Ozil would also be a good signing for United imo, but I am a bit more concerned about his work rate and his form, he seems to lack consistency and that is a bit of a worry. Having said that, if we could get him on a free in the summer then he'd still be well worth signing, he's got fantastic ability and Mourinho seemed to get the best out of him at Real Madrid.

If you don't pay a transfer fee for a player, you still have to pay large signing bonuses and agent fees.

Any elite level player (which Sanchez would be classed as) is difficult to sign at the best of times, when they are out of contract on the open market it will be even harder. We have to compete directly with not only Real Madrid and Barca but now City/Chelsea/Bayern/etc. With this in mind it's crucial to use anything you can to your advantage, be it money or otherwise. We may end up paying him too much money really, but he'd only be getting a bit less elsewhere in the grand scheme of things.

It's quite odd how people see us as some sort of monumental downgrade to rival teams. The reality is, current squad aside, we are anything but. We have a promising squad in need of improvement certainly, the history, the stadium, and are arguably the biggest brand club football has ever seen. I think most footballers would love to play for Mourinho despite how fans may perceive him at times (myself included). We are not some sort of low rent team despite some efforts to portray us as such.

I watched Andy Gray discussing it with George Boateng on BeinSports, it was quite interesting. Gray actually put forward a case for why he wouldn't just be joining Man Utd as a money grab, and Boateng didn't have much to say other than why wouldn't he go to City for a guaranteed Premier League medal...

As for developments on the Sanchez saga, nothing new seems to have happened so far today. BBC have an article up confirming things: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/42687789

Oh, and I liked this:

:D

Having said all of that, nothing is finalised yet and there are reports City haven't given up.

Bouhafsi reporting that we've rejected a swap offer from Arsenal with Martial going the other way. I would have loved to see our response when they suggested that :D

Yep, absolutely no chance. Can't blame Arsenal for asking though.

Mkhitaryan I'm not fussed about, he can be excellent but only 10% of the time (if that). Not sure Wenger would improve an already fragile player.

I don't want Mkhi to go because I think he'll be fantastic for them. We'd be in a stronger position if Jose hadn't spent the last 2 months trying to destroy his value as well. I'm also uncertain where Sanchez fits into our team if we do sign him. Right Wing? Up front with Lukaku?

LW/RW/ST/CF, I think he can function anywhere really. Would be good to have both him and Martial in the team.

What's this, football manager? He'll either play behind Lukaku when you're playing West Brom at home and on the left when you're away to City, and of course he'll provide cover for Lukaku. With those two Utd should be able to sign up an official teapot partner.

Yes :p He can play on the right can't he?

In theory but he's typically played from the left or through the middle for Arsenal. Being right footed, cutting in from the left is probably more natural for him than playing on the right - he's not going to play as a wide player swinging crosses in, is he.
