GPU prices go boom

I really think they need to do something about this. Of course governments don't care that I can't afford to upgrade my PC anymore, but they SHOULD care about the massive amounts of power being wasted mining Bitcoins.

https://powercompare.co.uk/bitcoin/

One more example how greed and stupidity are destroying our environment for future generations.

Slightly moot point as very few "home" miners are mining bitcoin

Whereas with a ponzi scheme there's only one cycle of boom -> bust.

Ok then, a boom and bust scheme.

Worthless? No. Just worth less than it is at this moment. The market has never collapsed.

It hit rock bottom with the Blackcoin boom and bust and people were trading coins like JPC which was worth around 2 Satoshi. BTC was what, £130?

Tell someone tomorrow that their BTC is now valued at £130 and see who's first to use the word worthless. ;)

I was going to upgrade to a msi gtx1080ti gaming x from a msi gtx980ti gaming but not a £900.00 that's a rip off price that's how to kill off gaming make things to pricey .

I have the money to upgrade to high end parts, but I refuse to pay these prices.

I'm worried that on Volta launch, everything will be out of stock straight away and even 1080Ti will most likely still be out of stock, even when new tech is launched. Perhaps still at MSRP or higher.

Like many others, I'm tempted to go back to consoles again.

Meth is illegal, mining isn't :).
And I think many would rather have a way of making money roll in for the least amount of effort. Some mugs however I'm sure enjoy the 9-5 grind for 45+ years of their lives. Cant retire on mining of course but there are periods where it can give a little additional income, but still comes with risks mind you.
I think that nicely illustrates the mindset (greed) of some miners.

A lot of us realise that being a productive member of society, with a real job, doesn't make you a "mug". Just as we all depend on people performing jobs for us, none of us have a right to "opt-out" of doing jobs for other people. The idea that you are a "mug" unless you find a way to do nothing for a living is truly, truly sad and is nothing more than greed and selfishness.

Mining, to me at least, is just a bit of fun. I'm not expecting it to make me rich.

The only reason I've started mining is I'd picked up a V64 at launch price, noticed the price had shot up massively and discovered it was because it's particularly good at mining.

How many cards do you have now?

If you mine with 1-4 cards (eg) that's one thing... it's the people who just keep adding more and more cards seeing $$$ in their eyes that are the problem.

Once there is better miner hardware people should move over to that if they want to make a profit. But people sometimes don't make good decisions (Trump) so we'll see when Sensible Town returns.

Its still cost per frame that matters. I've got plenty of as yet unplayed games in Steam library waiting for a future worthy monitor and graphics card.

I don't think you can justify something purely on the basis that it pays your bills and your mortgage.

Otherwise I will might selling crystal meth, and just tell the judge, "It's OK, I was doing it to pay the bills."

Most people work to pay their bills; I'm not sure why we're supposed to have sympathy for a person who is trying to pay his bills by leaving his PC on 24/7? Doesn't seem like a particularly noble enterprise to me :p

But, this isn't doing anything illegal?

And if the guy is paying his electricity bills what's the problem?

If a person had the foresight to buy a few graphic cards and setup a mining farm and is making a ton of money right now and is using mining as his only source of income, why do you have a problem with that??

I think it's just a lot of sour grapes by people who haven't got in early enough.

Yes I'm sure those buying 10 + gpus from the get go don't have enough money to pay for their mortgage and bills in the first place :p

And why not just call it a day when its become too difficult to mine. You've recovered the cost of your 1 or 2 gpus and made a little extra on top so just stop there dont be greedy.

So you would turn down a raise at work? You earn enough You don't really need it. I presume you don't buy shares, or invest in anything? Surely you have enough? Don't be greedy now.

What’s the problem with that? Nothing wrong with it all I’m my eyes, infact I have also jumped on the mining train with a small 4 card rig, as well as starting to invest, I intend to add an additional 3 cards at some point. Miners arnt to blame for the price hikes, retailers are.

Early December last year I replaced my ageing 760 with an EVGA 1060 6 GB FTW+ for £270 (from another site). I'm glad I took the plunge because it looks like I'd struggle to find even a decent 3 GB version at that price now.

If work choose to give me a raise that's their decision that isn't greed on my part. I've never asked for a raise. I don't invest either. As it stands I earn enough to cover my bills and save a little for emergencies and hobbies.

Money isn't a massive motivator for me though. I'd rather do a days volunteering for a charity or good cause than do a days overtime at work. Far more rewarding for me personally.
