The VW UP Gti - What do we all think?

I have the TSI variant myself and aside from the GTI badge and the tartan seats I don’t see why anyone would pick this new one over that. From what I understand they use the same engine and a remap would probably see the TSI somewhere in the same region as the GTI. Not sure I would call it a “hot” hatch in any case. :p

Sports seats you won't fall out of. Sports suspension and wider grippier tyres on 17"s for the twisties. Probably a nice leather steering wheel over yours, not that I know what spec it is...

Mine has the leather wheel from the Golf with all of the controls on it. 195 40 17” on mine also. AFAIK the TSI only comes in the High Up spec but I may be wrong. Not sure what are extras and what come as standard in that trim but I do have all the toys, CC, heated seats and mirrors, parking sensors etc.

I don't think they're very sporty seats. Comfy, but not much side support (and I'm 5" 7 ish and tiny). Got my order number now, at this rate it's probably gonna be late June or July...

I think it's a case of you pays your money and you makes your choice, cost wise they are not that far apart anyway. The 90ps "High-Up," which is probably the closest spec wise comes in at £13,075 against £14,150 for 5dr Up-Gti, so £1075 difference. But that doesn't seem too far off the mark as you get the 6 speed box, slightly lower and stiffer suspension plus the "Gti" badge if that's what you crave. Personally the 6 speed box would swing it for me, though I'd prefer the slightly more subtle looks of the "High-Up" The Gti makes a nice addition to the "Up!" range, I have no idea why they didn't add them to the range from the off. Maybe they were waiting for the right engine in the form of the 1.0Tsi turbo???

I really like the car, but "goodies" wise as standard the Vdub looks a little stingy, compared to the likes of the Kia Picanto, Hyundia i10 and Swift. They may not be as "designer-trendy" as the Up!, but certainly offer a lot of kit for the money. The buttom line is you buy the car that suits your needs, they are all a million miles away from "small cars" from the past.

We're all being duped into thinking the Up is a small car anyway. Parked next to a Mk1 Gti they are about the same size, and no-one pegged the original Gti as a small city-car.

Am in insane in considering one for 24k miles pa?

See if you can get an extended test drive.

Also, those banging on about drum brakes, my 2014 180BHP VW Amarok which weighs about two tonnes, can carry over a tonne and can tow 3.5 tonnes has massive rear drum brakes under the 19” wheels. In terms of braking performance, there’s nothing wrong with drums at all.

I really like the idea and design of the up. I was thinking of one for a 2nd car. But its quite small inside especially in the rear and boot. A lot of them don't even have AC, where as the Seat model does.

Its nicer in the GTI trim. But its expensive for the kit you get. Then again all the small VW sport hatches, from the G40, Polo GTI, Lupo GTI have all been a bit too expensive for for what you get.

It "feels" smaller inside than a K11 Micra, especially in the back. I wasn't expecting that. Maybe its my imagination.

Dunno, It wouldn't surprise me. I think some of the space get eaten into by the built-in "crumple-zones" If you happened to be unlucky enough to be in a prang I think you'd stand a better chance of walking away if you were in the Up. I don't think the Up's target audience is going to be families anyway so the back would be for occasional use.

Talking about "Target audiences" has anyone seen the new Vauxhall advert for the new Grandland-X. It would appear to be the sort of young lady who does their shopping in their pajamas and dressing gown. Not sure they've done their homework there. I suspect if you wear your pajamas to do the shopping in, a new car would probably be way down the list behind fags, larger, pizza...;):):)

...

For sure the k11 had a meh safety rating even when new. When replacing ours as a 2nd car I went for old mk v Golf over a Up because we occasionally need to carry 5 and even though we do little mileage it's mainly on the motorway. I may switch it to a Up of the running costs creep up on the Golf as it's a bit thirsty.

Probably.... maybe..... All I know is that back when I was a youngun I did many many thousands of miles in a Renault 5 GT turbo. I imagine the up is nicer to drive than some tinny small engine big turbo French car.

Talking of which does anyone else miss massive turbo laggggggg?
