Pro Cycling Discussion 2018

Froome riding into the Giro nicely, after he released the recon video of the stage I thought he might go well!

A lot of annoying runners very close to the riders on the mountain, a lot of police/army at the top, they could have spread them out a little more! Lucky nobody came down or got hit by a fan or moto!

Sunday’s stage is either a breakaway or a total ambush smashfest!

The Sky youngsters are absolutely ripping the peleton apart on the climbs and then launching Egan Bernal in the tour of California, superb performance.
I've not had a chance to watch it yet, amazing riding by all accounts. They needed some of them in the Giro!

Dumoulin did well to pace himself up and give away so little to Yates
He's been mega, done that both days over the weekend now and I really think Yates needs to be worried. Going by his interviews I think he realises it might not be enough. The TT is going to be edge of the seat stuff! Great viewing! :D

Is there any way of replaying the stages legally? Happy to pay but I can’t watch live due to family stuff
Eurosport player, although they're only on there for 7-10 days. Giro currently only goes back to Stage 10. ToC stage 1 is on there but will vanish tomorrow.

I'd say the footage/coverage are not worth the full £6.99 pm/£40 year price. Last year I used a BC deal from Faceache and got a year for £24 from April onwards, then last November I got a code from what I think was a Strava or RCUK competition and got a year for £1.99. So well worth hunting around for deals/vouchers.

Simon Yates! This is a champions ride if he brings this in!
Totally deserves to win it in my opinion. He'll have the TT of his life, I just hope he has the legs for it! Almost want TD to have a bad day! :D

Amazing ride from Froome on saturday and then shocking ride on sunday. Really think he's out of the running to win it now.

The only worry is for Yates having a disaster day in one of the mountain stages to come and blowing out minutes to Tommy D. Fingers crossed though.

Anyone got any ideas how much slower they are projecting Yates to be in the TT ? Its been banded about a lot r.e the TT but wasn't sure as to what margins we are looking at

I may have a stream that a teammate shared last week, he said every stage was on there and in english commentary as it was the only way he could watch these latest stages in Israel with commentary. I've not watched it myself so won't post it here, but trust me if you want the link.

Cycling Podcast seemed to think its about 3 seconds per km going on previous form in TTs. So about a minute and a half.

I reckon it'll be another minute on top of that.
Same, I'm sure much of the commentary has been around the 3 minute marker, maybe even 4+ minutes to be relatively 'safe'. :o

Aru has had some special sauce in his sandwich yesterday!

No just cheated by drafting so was penalised 20 secs which still wasn't enough.

Hope Yates does it though its been like watching cycling back in the 80's when it wasn't about staring at the power meter.

Great job by Yates yesterday. Looked like he needed his saddle an inch further forward as he seemed to shuffle back every 10 to 15 seconds.

"Being in the lead after the time trial changes my tactics for the remaining stages. Unfortunately for the fans, I might be more defensive."

Be silly to do anything else now. He can sit on Tom's wheel if he wants, whilst keeping an eye on Pozzovivo and Froome

He looked like Contador on a TT bike with all the shuffling. Immense ride and I love that he’s taken it to everyone else which is rare in the GC riders these days. I’ve been riding to work in my Orica jersey but will have to buy a Michelton one if he brings it home. The backstage pass videos have been great too

Oh and thanks for the Eurosport advice all. I’ve caught up now and have just about survived Carlton Kirby’s inane rubbish and the “Yes erm well erm” from kelly.

Agreed, they should've hit him harder than that!

Froome does it too, Contador did it very obviously and I think I've seen Tony Martin also do it? Must be something related to technique? TD is about the only big TT'er who seems really solid on his saddle.

Amazing ride by TM in the TT though, really thought he was past results like that! Amazing one by Alex Dowsett too!

Which are those?

That must've been some serious binge watching, unless you did all highlights! ;)

I reckon the saddle shuffling is because the UCI rules on how far back a saddle should be tend to penalise smaller riders and they are constantly fighting between where they want to sit (further forward) and where they "should" sit (further back, which is presumably the position their saddle height accommodates). Coming forward initially feels more comfortable until the lack of leg extension starts to become a problem, so they shuffle back to where they should be until that becomes uncomfortable, so they shuffle forward. Rinse and repeat, ad infinitum.

On top of that, the more climbing oriented riders probably feel better in a more rearward position given that recruits more of the glutes (which tends to be how they climb too) but this position is harder to maintain as the hip angle is more closed. They could adapt to the more rearward position but for the vast majority of riders it's not worth the investment.

Although I imagine a lot of riders do velodrome aero testing these days, the above tends to be a symptom of wind tunnel testing as riders get put in aero positions they can't maintain on a non-static bike.

Interesting result today, hopefully Yates just holding a bit back before the next stages....not sure Doumalin will have enough in the next 2 stages but not outside realms of possibility for others to make serious in roads if Yates legs are feeling it...
