What film did you watch last night?

The 100 Year Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared - 7.5 / 10

What a great film..It's like the Swedish love child of Forest Gump and The Straight Story :D

The Last Jedi

After the ordinary-by-the-standards-of-the-recent-series Solo, I decided to pick up the The Last Jedi on Blu Ray at the Supermarket for a rewatch. Best decision ever. Whereas The Force Awakens loses a little (but not a lot) of its shine when rewatched, The Last Jedi gets even better. You pick up on the more subtle story-telling: the way they've woven Yoda and Obi Wan into Luke's story; the importance of Rose and Finn's story; the way that Poe and Leia's viewpoints both get played out; the elegant tells that Luke is force-projecting; and on and on. In a serendipitous parallel to the film action, Hamill has gone from the clumsy actor he was in Star Wars to a master of the art; selling whole scenes on his facial expression alone. As his character reflects the master Jedi Obi Wan; his acting reflects the master of acting that was Alec Guinness. This really is the film that Luke deserved.

Whereas Solo lacks the epic, galaxy-spanning grandeur of the Star Wars series, TLJ delivers it in spades. The cinematography and music are exquisite and absolutely on point. From the rain-swept island that Rey finds Luke on, through the dramatic and artful shattering of the star destroyer by the force battle between Rey and Kylo mixed with the light-speed ramming by Holdo, to the white-on-red salt planes it delivers a varied and beautiful universe. There are mild complaints, of course - Admiral Holdo is wasted, a few scenes feel heavy-handed, and some key story elements could have been better lamp-shaded or explained for the pickiest of fans - but overall it's the only Star Wars movie good enough to deserve time spent wondering whether it's as good as the first film.

The bigger worry is where the sequel goes. It seems obvious this was Luke's film, and The Force Awakens feels like Han's film, and so - together with the narrative direction - it seems obvious that the third film was intended to be Leia's film but we've tragically lost Carrie Fischer before that could happen. One option would be the resurrection technology they used on Grand Mof Tarkin in Rogue One but that is far too uncanny valley for a whole film so I really hope they don't go that direction.

I can't wait to see what they deliver next December; I can only hope it's anywhere near this good.

10/10. Easily.

The Last Jedi as well.

First time watching it and thought it was probably as weak, if not weaker, than The Phantom Menace. Found myself reading the forums and checking the time a number of times I was so bored.

3/10.

Green Lantern

Was flicking through stuff on Amazon Prime trying to find something to watch and saw this notoriously bad film, figured I may as well have a laugh so fired it up. I honestly don't understand why it gets so much hate, okay it's not one of the best comic book films but it's definitely not the worst. The acting was good, the storys okay, and the effects are a bit silly but not really any worse that any other older film with a lot of CGI. Personally I thought this was a better film than the likes of Iron Man 3 or Civil War.

6.5/10
I totally agree with you, I thought it was a really enjoyable romp. It came out before the cinema became saturated with superhero films so I don't know how it would stand up if released today, but it was great in its time. IIRC, the story wasn't to the liking of comic fans and suffered as a result. I woulda given it a round 7.

The Last Jedi

<Humour>

10/10. Easily.
Great Saturday night troll post, would read again

40k Ultramarines... Quite enjoyed it for what it was.
"It's just balefire brothers"

About 8 of us were watching the DVD when it first came out, whilst eating pizza during a wargaming weekend.

Ever since from time to fime when playing and something goes wrong, or just out of the blue someone will pipe up "It's just balefire".;)

Am secretly hoping my 3 year old son gets in to warhammer so I can take it up again... Haven't dabled since I was around 13.

Dark City - 6.5 / 10

A matrixesque Sci Fi thriller, quite good, but even though only released a year before The Matrix, it feels like it was made in a different decade.

Which then gave me a hankering for..

The Matrix - 9 / 10

Just as good as ever, an all time classic

Avengers Infinity War. 8/10

Another good Marvel film. Lots of action and kept me entertained. I felt this didn't drag on like the last avengers film did a bit.

Downsizing 2/10

What on earth happened to this film? I thought it was a great idea for a film, but it was just completely weird.

Peter Rabbit 8/10

Put this on for the kids, and ended up watching it from start to finish with them. Really enjoyed it ;-)

Red Sparrow 7/10

Good film, enjoyed it....passed the time. Nice turns and twists.

After they became small... the fact that they were small was entirely irrelevant to the film at that point. Then it just because divorced guy/climate change film... it's a film that had an idea, executed it in the first act then had absolutely no where to take the concept and became a completely different film. The final two thirds of the film could have been done without the first act, the first act is disconnected to the final two acts. It's incredibly bad story telling.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018) - 6/10

A fun family adventure with a weak plot and weak characters.

The dinosaurs look superb and the action scenes are thrilling, but it peaks far too soon – once they leave the island, it goes severely downhill and almost ends up a farce at times.

Still, it remains entertaining with the odd lighthearted moment and the iconic scenes given a modern face lift was a nice touch.

Mother!
I'm a fan of Arnofski but this one was a bit out there. I appreciate his films are an acquired taste but for the most part they have some sense of normal in between the surreal. This one however I really had to consult wiki to understand wtf was meant to be going on, which did detract a little from my enjoyment. I appreciate the sentiment now I understand what he was trying to say but I wonder if it was worth it if you don't quite get the message across without having to have it explained.
That or I'm just a bit oblivious / thick.

The 2012 Judge Dredd film. I found almost everything about the film to be excellent.

And to think this film was included in a list of pointless remakes on a website I was looking at.

How can it be ******* pointless when it's a lot closer to what Judge Dredd is intended to be! Idiots.

That's because a lot of clueless Americans thought it was a remake of the Stallone film, rather than another film of the original comic source (which they also don't know about).
