Spain vs Portugal in UHD HLG

I suppose HLG is in its infancy (will it grow up?)
The implementation on different TV's has not been studied by Vincent afaik.
The bbc don't have control of the world cup mastering/filming unlike for planet earth 2 iplayer broadcast, so maybe the results(dimness) are a consequence,
is this the first large scale public trial for hlg ?

This reddit thread and ref'd bbc paper suggest that if it has been mastered for higher nits than the tv, highlights could be cut

Yep, same here.

I watched the England game last night on my LG B6 and the little notification comes up in the right hand corner, and after the game I switched to the analysis on Sky Q HD and the England red kit looked really dull compared to how it looked in HDR

That seems completely pointless, when I heard BBC advertise watching matches in VR I thought they'd at least make some effort to integrate the user into the stadium atmosphere. Instead, you get to sit inside a virtual room with a big but low resolution TV. You could probably buy a 65" TV for the cost of VR.
 
Interesting point about being free. I'd assume you need a 2TB Sky Q box and Multi-Room (normal 4K requirement) which I guess doesn't make it free really.
 
Thanks for pointing this out. Currently watching Argentina in glorious HLG 4K on my 65 OLED.. Looks and sounds miles better.

I understand your post but I think you mean the HLG which has nothing to do with the resolution (UHD)
Sky have offered UHD for a year now and have far more content than the BBC. However it looks bland as it offers no version of HDR (yet)

What i mean is skys transmission of UHD isn’t a patch on BBCs World Cup coverage and the downloadable content is very bitrate starved, I have found that Netflix and amazons 1080p streams look far better than skys so called UHD content
