Sitting watching TV in the back lounge last night and heard an awful sound coming out of the kitchen. Walked in there to find my 23 year old daughter choking on something with a look of absolute terror on her face. I'm not first aid trained but knew the basics of the Heimlich maneuver and after several attempts she spat the object out. This sounds funny now but she'd got a large ice cube stuck down her air way. She couldn't breathe at all and I can tell you I was absolutely panic stricken. All she has to show for it is a sore throat but I'm wondering what would have happened if I hadn't been there? Would she have passed out before the ice cube melted? I guess we'll never know but she won't be chewing on ice cubes anymore.

Should have thrown an olive down her throat, followed by a measure of gin and waved a bottle of vermouth past her eyes. Would have quickly melted the ice cube and made her feel a lot better!

This is the closest vermouth should get to gin when making a martini.

You should have waited to see what happens in the name of science!

In this case, the longer you would have left her, the safer she would become as the ice melted thus reducing the blockage

Alternatively you could have poured hot water or salt down her throat or put her next to a fire to melt the ice quicker

I’ve seen my aunt choke on a pickled onion on Christmas night. That was scary. Her son did the heimlich on her and it shot out. She genuinely hasn’t eaten one since.

Probably would have melted before it could cause death.

Pass out maybe? but still.... not exactly a nice situation.

Not knowing what was stuck in there I assumed the worst and I reckon she was without air for at least 40 seconds. Doesn't sound long but almost a minute of sheer terror. Everyone assumes it can't have been that scary, especially with it being a harmless ice cube but I can assure you, the panic was very real.

Of course, choking is choking no matter what is causing it.

This happened to me once but it was not an ice cube it was a minstrel sweet.

We had just had a meal in the pub and my daughter wanted sweets from the machine they had. She was about 4 or 5 we where just about to leave and she come over going blue and could not speak.

I hit her so hard on the back it shot out like a pellet, she had bruising but she 11 now and still alive today. Only time I have ever hit my daughter.
