*** Nintendo Switch ***

Picked up Sonic Mania Plus over the weekend. I really need to stop buying games and finish the 8 or so I have at the moment.

still got about 70% of Zelda to go as well.

Are we getting anymore info on the online service soon, as its due to launch next month?

Based on the fact this is Nintendo, probably not. You will however get another million things about Smash Bros but who needs other games eh.

What information are you missing?

We currently know that:
- It's needed for online play
- We know the cost
- We know the launch date
- It provides cloud save backups
- F2P games can be played online without the pass
- 20 NES games are playable with the pass
- More games will be added in the future. the platform and specific games are not decided yet
- eShop discounts will be available for people with an online pass (just like PSN)

- Does this mean a better online service as its paid for
- Will we get better/proper friends management/chat that isn't utter ****
- Will they be doing what they have done on previous consoles and sell things like gamecube/wii games or just drip feeding us NES games that a lot of people don't care about
- Will they make the eShop any better than the utter mess it is currently
- If we stop paying for the service do we lose access to cloud saves (why on earth don't we have a decent and free way to back up our save data still!?)
- Will they do anything to address cheating in online games

There is plenty of stuff that we would like to know and lets be honest, they haven't said anything because the answer is probably no to every question above. It still feels like Nintendo are a massively contradictory company. Make a great console and a few first party games but drop the ball on almost everything else. The OS is far too limited and doesn't allow any customisation or organisation. It will have been a year and a half since launch before they get a **** implementation of online up that doesn't even sit in the same realm as MS or Sonys offering. They didn't seem to think the Switch was going to be anything like as popular as it was and the games lineup has dried up since the first year and has relied massively on indies and ports from their previous console.

Its just frustrating. Everyone with half a brain could see what needs to be done and what simple things would make a massive difference to their customers and Nintendo just bury their head in the sand and go "no no no you don't need this".

All of your questions have already been answered.

1- No, they call the current online a "free trial period" so the service will be as it is now.
2- No.
3- They have stated they have no plans for a virtual console and say the Switch online games along with the standalone mini consoles are their replacement for it.
4- They have added a featured section and they are working on updating how the store works.
5- Yes
6- They haven't commented on this one to my knowledge, but new Switches are currently not hack-able and the older ones are getting banned so the cheating should decrease with time.

I'm not supporting the online service by the way, but the answers to your questions are out there.

Regarding the OS, the only features I would like are:
1- To be able to keep all my games up to date automatically, and not just the last 6 that I played most recently.
2- Folders

Have you seen much suspected cheating? Can't say I have but I've only really played Mario Kart, ARMS and Splatoon 2 for any extended length of time (500+ hours combined).

I've seen none in my many hundreds of hours of Splatoon or Mario Kart. I don't doubt that it's out there but I've never seen it.

- Will we get better/proper friends management/chat that isn't utter ****

This is the one thing that irks me. I am not convinced they're not going to do something about this. It feels like the one question which comes to "more information will be released at a later time"

Thats not a straight answer. Thats a vague "things might change in the future but for now this is all you get"

Thats just embarrassing. Their social implementation is god awful currently.

3- They have stated they have no plans for a virtual console and say the Switch online games along with the standalone mini consoles are their replacement for it.

I haven't seen anything from Nintendo saying that they will just be releasing "mini" versions of classic console and thats an utterly **** way of making your back catalogue available. I don't want 6 small consoles sitting around that I have limited games on that I can't choose. Why has the Switch done so well? In a huge part its because its an always on, portable games console that you can take with you and play games properly on the go or on the TV. Giving us a load of little consoles for old games is just a cynical cash grab. The more recent the consoles get, the more costly making a mini version of them would be. Gamecube with 4 proper controllers? Wonder how much that will be.

All I can see them saying is that there will be no "virtual console" in the same way there was on the old consoles. They haven't said it won't be under another name.

4- They have added a featured section and they are working on updating how the store works.

How about a crap filter. How about rankings, ratings and reviews. How about instead of aiming for something ridiculous like 40 new games a week or whatever they said recently they spend some time and effort to make the store better.

Cheers Nintendo, way to support your customers with a console that is portable so could be lost quite easily.

6- They haven't commented on this one to my knowledge, but new Switches are currently not hack-able and the older ones are getting banned so the cheating should decrease with time.

Thought the new ones had a vulnerability too.

I would like to see themes, folders, auto updates, better notifications, proper messaging and friends system, netflix. Simple stuff that every modern console has.

Not allowing the back catalogue to be accessed on the Switch is such a missed opportunity and I can't see them sticking to that forever. I took that news back then as the virtual console won't return but maybe they would implement something under a different name. Clutching at straws I guess :)

We would all love to rebuy Mario 64 for £40, just let us do it.... ;)

They've already said that its basically just the name "virtual console" which is no longer continuing. But they'll provide the service under a different name.

If only that was true :(

You will not be able to buy a game you want outright unless it's via the mini consoles, so even ignoring the name the functionality of the virtual console will not be coming back. Instead you with have a slowly growing, possibly multi-tiered, games as a service model that no one wants.

Clears it up, thanks. I'm happy to pay the yearly sub if backed up by a solid library of games in the months to come. Will wait and see.
