What film did you watch last night?

"The boy"

Movie about an elderly english couple in a big country house hiring a nanny (lauren cohan from walking dead) to babysit their child who's actually a doll. Pretty good movie but it gets a bit obvious just after half way in whats really going on.

Ready Player One - Not read the book and seen plenty of discussion on here. I thought was enjoyable enough but can't say I'd watch it again. Everything else about it has already been said about easter eggs, games etc. 6/10

Deepwater Horizon - 6.5/10

Surprisingly enjoyable. Though the old ‘Ameriiiiicuuuuh’ is well and truly enforced throughout. I get irritated by John Malkovich these days too!
The effects, build up and main event are very well done though.

Predator 2 I didn't think so much of the picture - still over grainy and a bit pixellated, needed some judicious cleaning up. Story is a bit more tongue in cheek, the scene on the Metro made no sense at all in terms of Predator lore.

I thought the premise was that he was hunting Bill Paxton, and because it's America in the 'future' pretty much all the public on the metro carriage had guns and were therefore viable targets?

First Reformed 5/10

It got glowing reviews and I'm always up for a movie with Ethan Hawke in it. However, I lost interest a little with the "preachiness", it got weird around 3/4's of the way through and the ending swerve was incredibly unsatisfying. Can't say that I'd recommend it.

The Meg (2018) - 2/10

A bad film with few redeeming features.

The plot is functional but very derivative, the dialogue is stilted and corny, and the cast are wooden and stereotyped.

As the film progresses, it gets more and more stupid, with no suspense or tension and pathetically poor attempts at comedy.

The underwater scenes at the start are good as they are beautiful and atmospheric and although the sharks look menacing, the special effects aren’t that spectacular.
I’ll still watch it. I still watch the guff they stick on the sci-fi channel like Sharknado and Mechashark lol

If it was "so bad, it's good", i would have enjoyed it. If it was either played straight or as a comedy, i would have enjoyed it. I usually enjoy B movies for their schlock, but this one just didn't work for me at all.

The Darkest Minds (2018) - 2/10

A boring and unoriginal young adult dystopian film that treads a heavily worn path.

The premise is weak and the story is straightforward, although it does some world building for the inevitable sequel(s).

The special effects are OK and the car chase / bonding scenes are fun, but there’s little sense of threat, the villains are dull and cliché, and the romance is about as forced and predictable as it can get.

MEG - 2/10 as a fan of the book - 6/10 as a movie - For me as a movie this slips into the realm of "so bad it's good" like Sharknado etc making it a fairly enjoyable "brain off" movie with some fairly decent CGI, OK characters and story and some OK acting going on. As a fan of the books it's an unmitigated disaster with the original story eviscerated until just the characters names and title remain and the rest being made up on the spot, just like World War Z.

Tag - 7/10 - A light-hearted comedy centring around a group of guys still playing Tag after 30 years. The humour works really well, the acting is OK (although Isla Fisher stole it for me) and the story really works well with the cast bringing a feeling of genuine reality to some utter silly events despite all the leads playing themselves rather than characters (Jon Hamm is playing Jon Hamm, Nick from New Girl is playing Nick from New Girl etc).

A Wrinkle In Time

A very frustrating family film in that it could have been good but it just wasn’t. Set up was fine but then a certain ‘smugness’ was established that was difficult to shake. I felt like the whole ‘magical’ vibe it was going for was being rammed down my throat, which is a shame because it was often quite interesting to look at and some of the later scenes were quite intriguing and of a surprisingly dark tone (although fleeting and disappointingly nonsensical).

Over the last few nights I have watched
Thor,
Thor, The Dark World,
Thor, Ragnarok.

Now these are not my usual type of film but I really enjoyed them but they mention things that may have been in other films.
What movies will fill in the gaps and in what order should i watch them?

Watch all the marvel films in the order they are released.

There are some you can skip.

But even the worst ones (Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2) are perfectly watchable.

Most important:

Iron Man (origin)
Captain America: The first Avenger (origin)
Thor (origin)
Avengers
Captain America: Winter Soldier (best marvel movie IMO)
Guardians of the Galaxy
Avengers: Age of Ultron
Captain America: Civil War
Spider-Man
Thor: Ragnarok
Avengers: Infinity War

I guess there is an argument for watching Dr. strange as that is also an origin movie for a character who plays a fairly major role in Infinity War.

Deadpool 2

Loved it. Basically the 1st Deadpool, but more Deadpool! The cameos in it coupled with the constant 4th wall breaking references were amazing.

There was one I didn't get though, in spoilers

When they're in the prison they're talking about the "biggest" guy in there and the ice box etc and Deadpool looks directly at the camera and says "including a large dark black void" or something along those lines. Anyone remember this and know the meaning? :)

Top notch comedy, visually great. A worthy sequel.

Twister

The classic end of term geography class film! Actually surprisingly good. Naturally interesting subject matter, the excitement of the chase and incredible special efffects override the hammy acting. Actually the hammy acting and the hilarious guitar work on the soundtrack gives the film a sort of retro charm.

Those special effects though... a forgotten gem in that regard I think. Perfect blend of CGI and practical effects. Yes the flying cow is silly but all the other stuff flying around... dropping tractors etc. Must have been a nightmare to film!
