People stepping in front of you

True, but if your flying along at full chat, its not going to help is it

This just goes back to the topic of the thread, dont step out in front of someone without looking. When electric cars are common place, people are going to get run over in large numbers because if people dont hear something coming, they just wont bother looking. Are we going to expect all traffic to travel ever slower to cater for this phenomenon or are we going to accept resonsibility for crossing the road safely.

You live and work in the country surely you understand that being in the countryside is a far more pleasant a riding experience than in a town? Less polution, less busy, less stop start riding, plus if you want to ride a long distance you end up having to leave the town anyway.

Yes i understand perfectly.

Surely you can understand that getting off the road entirely and finding somewhere else to ride, might be even better? This is my point.

Sorry if you dont like it.

I understand that certain sections of the public would like cyclists to be the off the roads all together yes and that opinion doesnt bother me in the slightest.

Lol. Youve answered a different question than ive asked. You are being deliberately argumentative, while being a bit harsh towards me.

All i am saying is that if your in the country anyway, its fairly easy to find somewhere off the road to go. Which for me is ideal, So i personally dont understand why people dont.

Thats all... simply my opinion.

off-road is a different style of riding with different pros/cons ...
as Bear said, I also infer from your comment, that you think the road is the 'wrong' place for cyclists.

Agree cyclist are often cycling inappropriately to adjust for behaviour of pedestrians/dogs stepping out, but cyclist will come off pretty badly in any collision too.

Probably for the same reason that cross country skiers don't necessarily go downhill skiing, off road motorcyclists often don't ride on the road, figure skaters don't really do speed skating.... different horses for different courses.

I don't think my Felt F95 would be much cop off road, much as my Beta Evo 300 isn't much cop on it.

Sorry I misuderstood your post, it wasnt meant to be argumentative. As you say the Tour de France wannabes are riding the roads all over the countryside, the Tour de France is a road race, the people on the roads in the countryside are riding road bikes that arent meant to be ridden off road which is why they are called road bikes and are built for speed (all relative I know). A lot of them will be riding expensive carbon bikes that they wouldnt want to damage to riding across muddy rutted tracks or stony paths.

As an example, I have 3 bicycles and none of them is a mountain bike they are all road bikes although my touring bike would be quite happy to ride along a gravel path the other two wouldnt.

Tbf he said off the road not off road.

Velodrome?

Makes me laugh when people complain about a bike on a road. It’s making zero pollution, almost no noise, and with rider takes up about 3ft of width :p

Bikes were popular a long time before cars, by the way!

we can use the same logic and suggest all cars and motorbikes driven for fun should go to a race track instead of being driven around country roads and scenic routes.

seems people come from all over the world to this little town in the chur region of switzerland that has a population <1000 people to hammer their motorbikes every weekend. (seems classed as one of the top routes in the world sigh)
annoying as hell when you want some peace and quiet, at least bicycles make no sound and disturb almost no one

roads are for horses and carts, get off the road with those cars you monsters.
proven fact that car owners are child and dog killers

Happens all the time. Was crawling at a snails pace out of my schools car park, a kid is walking towards me on their phone, I stopped and only at the very last second did the kid realise. Nearly walked into my stationary car! I don’t see anyone looking where they are going these days.
