Boris and the burka

Isn't it also a problem that this sort of garb also excludes women from multiple forms of employment? I mean, fighter pilot and firefighter are definitely off the table.

"Muslim women are three times as likely to be unemployed, and twice as likely not to be in the jobs market in the first place, compared to women generally."

Is it actually legal to drive wearing these things, peripheral vision must be badly compromised?

The difference in employment is unlikely due to face covering as only a small fraction of Muslim women wear them and the ones that do probably are less likely to seek active employment. The article seems to suggest it is due to discrimination. There was a thread a while ago where some OCuk members admitted that often they would bin CVs with foreign names because they got so many come through that they needn't waste time on people who may not be fluent in English.

Higher unemployment for Muslim women can’t entirely be explained by things like English language skills, education levels or religious objections to working certain jobs, according to a study carried out at the University of Bristol in 2015.

That found that Muslim women were 71% more likely than white Christian women to be unemployed, even comparing women with similar language abilities, education, marital status, number of children and strength of religious belief. The author, Dr Nabil Khattab, suggests that this could be attributed to discrimination.

That’s backed up by studies showing that CVs sent out under ethnic minority names are less likely to result in an interview offer, even if the qualifications and experience listed are similar to other applications.

If a man wanted to wear a burka and it was not allowed, would that be sexist? Impinging on his rights? What if he wanted to be a transsexual Muslim?

My emphasis tells me all I need to know about the likely veracity of the study. How on earth do you control for the 'strength of religious belief' between apparently Christian women and Muslim ones?

Notoriously reliable self reporting? Did they devise a matrix?

Needles to say if you turn up wearing conspicuous religious/cultural garb to a lot of job interviews you may harm your employment prospects.

I have seen similiar multiple cv application discrimination studies and they are often flawed in their methodology like the American studies that sent obviously 'black' names on some CV's and more 'white' names on others except the 'black' names also correlated to lower socio economic status whilst the 'white' names corresponded to generally higher status.

Needles to say if it was tried with some names corresponding to lower socio economic 'white' status (like Billy Bob etc) the result may be different.

Looking at the study in question here I would say they have also failed to consider the effect of not just ethnicity implied by a persons name but also class.

for the simple reason their husbands would not allow it, they would be convinced their wives would be having sex at every opportunity because evil western men might be in the same building.

It too am far from convinced that the studies cited accounted for the attitude of male partners/relatives and different cultural expectations for the Muslim women.

I would not actually be surprised if there was still some residual discrimination based on a person's perceived status as a Muslim (correctly or incorrectly assumed) as it does imply some potential issues for a prospective employer including but not necessarily limuted to a month's worth of daytime fasting every year with the associated late nights and early mornings and potentially issues around Friday working for a prospective employee.

His two comparisons were inappropriate jokes or not and undermined his whole piece had he not made them this situation would not exist.
Well considering there was only one comparison (which wasn't even inappropriate) and the second was fabricated by the media by misquoting him it's arguable this situation would still exist lol.

They didn't he makes an indirect comparison in his piece to bank robbers following a direct comparison to letterboxes, would you say it was ok for him in a serious political piece to compare the dress of a nun to a penguin?

It certainly wouldn’t offend me or send me into a meltdown like it has all the others.

A certain type of person has echoed that sentiment about evil madmen for a very long time.

That sort of sentiment has rarely worked out well in the past and is most unlikely to do so with that particular lying, racist scumbag.

I guess i'm a certain type of person.

They didn't
Yes they did. He never compared women in burkas to bank robbers, the media fabricated that claim based on an analogy he used (comparing an MP alone in his office with a female constituent wearing a face covering asking her to remove it so they can converse face to face, with a university lecturer asking a student in fancy dress to remove their mask so they can converse face to face). The "alt news" sites and the junk tabloids then reported that as him "calling women in Burkas bank robbers".

This bs not blown over yet, or is a small to miniscule minority still offended at fake news? Still playing brexit scapegoat?

It is an indirect comparison he is saying the two things are comparable ie someone dressed as a bank robber and someone wearing a religious piece of clothing.

It certainly wouldn’t offend me or send me into a meltdown like it has all the others.

but should he make that comparison or not in a serious political piece?

Brilliant, I think everyone has one of those Mini Egg cups :D

indeed, he nailed it... the fleece + shorts combo, the scruffy hair, just casually coming out with the same sort of mismatched mugs everyone gets from Easter eggs etc..

man of the people look sorted + journalists present generally charmed by him/amused etc..

No don't you see, this is the work of an evil genius madman who is using dog whistling techniques to pull the wool over the eyes of the entire British public while he deliberately stirs up right-wing anger and prepares a secret army of angry people who think a person's face should be visible in public
