Petrol

Premium would be stuff like v power, Bp ultimate and 99 momentum.

All of which have many more cleansing properties than their non premium counterparts.

The whole supermarket fuel being bad is a myth. It's just that premium removes carbon build up. We have a golf TDI we have had from new in 2003 run on nothing but Asda fuel and its injectors are fine. It's done nearly 200k miles too.

You realise you are arguing with Simon, who has worked in the oil and fuel business for decades? I trust him more than your anecdotal evidence.

For reference, 99Momentum doesnt have additives. It is 95RON with additional ethanol to boost the RON, it is not a superior fuel at all.

V-Power and Ultimate, you are right.

I use the good stuff and only put 95 in when I'm caught short at a filling station that doesn't sell 97+.

The two reasons are noticeably better mileage and she seems pokier too.

Engine is on 47k and when I ram a tank of 99Ron with redex added the economy seemed to jump up again, but subsequent redex tanks haven't replicated this.

So I think running the good stuff all the time with a redex tank every 2 mths or so works well.

That’s a 15 year old engine with Pumpe Duese injectors driven off a camshaft. Not really comparible to a modern common rail.

Are you sure injectors are fine ? Most of them get deposits and lose spray pattern. You are probably down 5-10% on power but as it’s a gradual thing you wouldn’t notice.

I use momentum 99 and it gives me an additional 2mpg. It actually works out around £30 less per 1000 miles than using normal 95ron fuel.

I use 99 Momentum because I do my weekly shop at Tesco and there's a sticker in my fuel flap to use 98+ fuel, plus it states that in the manual as well. It also mentions that 95 RON can be used with a slight loss of performance so I use the higher octane fuel.
Not sure how much 98+RON fuel was about back in 94 when the car was new!

I was actually just wondering if the higher price of a premium fuel offsets the additional MPG. Also if a premium fuel is better for the engine, does this save on future maintenance costs- although that is something nearly impossible to test given different driving styles, journeys and even the car themselves and potential failures.

My Focus ST225 got a few more mpg from premium. But performance wise I couldn't tell the difference. In the mk7 Fiesta ST, no difference.

Errrm.

What?

Momentum has cleaning additives too.

It uses UP TO 5% ethonol in its make up.
Oh and guess what... Vpower also uses UP TO 5% ethonol.

Same sodding fuel. But with different additive packages. Additives that are NOT worth 10-15p extra per L

But it is if as above, you get a big enough increase in mpg to justify it.

V-Power and Momentum 99 come from two different refineries and are unique to those refineries, so different base stocks. M99 has always been 5% ethanol, whilst V-Power and its predecessors has always listed up to 5% on their spec list so it isn't known exactly how much is present.

I use momentum purely for the fact its only 3p more expensive and my car seems to run better on it that other fuels and I get my clubcard points :)

however it may be placebo effect.
but I found it better than V power and the 95 ron stuff

i have 2 vw tdi based cars with mods , one is a PD one is a CR . the pd will run on any fuel really , the cr seems to be down on power and lethargic when running on asda and morrisons

Hahaha. If Vpower actually gave a benefit worth 15p we would all use it
It did for me so i'm not sure what welse to say, 20mpg vs 22 over a 50 litre fill works out cheaper in my book. Plus thats what the engines optimised for, its not some big conspiracy to buy expensive fuel.

Thats roughly a gallon of fuel per tank extra for £1.50 more (give or take a bit).

If your car is tuned for 98/99 and has an adaptive ECU ran by knock sensors, then you should put the best in which is Vpower99.

For example my Mustang had two knock sensors, the car was running a flex map, so the map could automatically adjust timing for better or worse fuels. So it could take full advantage of RON99 or octane boosters that actually work like Torco or race fuels, or even E85 (not easily available in UK), advance the timing as required to make more power.

Saying that even in my cars that don't have flex maps, I still use Vpower99, my thinking is because it has highest knock resistance compared to any other fuel and it has the best cleaning properties. Do I gain mpg, no idea, I just throw in what I think is the best for my car and Vpower99 is the best, not just because I think it is but I have contacts in motorsport and tuning who have done extensive testing on fuels where they do not run race fuels and they all tell me the same, Vpower99.
