What film did you watch last night?

IT - having read the book back in the day and watched Tim Curry do it so well in the nineties I was a bit apprehensive about this. I enjoyed it though, even if there were a few too many jump scares, and am looking forward to Chapter Two. 4/5

Downsizing

Been looking forward to seeing this for a while - Do yourself a favour... Avoid, Avoid, Avoid!
It was a great idea, but the story went in a totally weird direction. It was as if I watched a different film in the first hour to the last.

2/10 - I need 2 hours of my life back

Totally!!! The trailer makes this look like a fun version of the borrowers, 'hey look we have a giant bottle of vodka'
Instead it can't make it's mind up about it's message...oh we're consuming too much and ruining the planet, actually it's people that make our lives better not things, oh don't migrant workers have a hard life.
Plus Matt Damon completely phoned in his performance, definitely just a paycheck performance!

Timetrap 6/10

Some very annoying teen characters in this film, but it has some good ideas and is a reasonable low budget sci-fi effort. Worth a watch if you're bored and like this kind of film.

Wind River. Olson and Renner (or Red Witch & Hawkeye as my wife kept calling them) are both excellent in this murder mystery set in the bleak vastness of Wyoming. It's not exactly a laugh a minute and ends quite abruptly with no positive spin but the story is good, the acting is great (from everyone) and the cinematography (something I don't usually think about) is breath-taking.

One thing that did make me smile (as it does in other films) is that, right near the start, some blood is spilled onto snow. It is bright red. Like spray paint bright red. How many years has Hollywood been using fake blood but still they use something that is just ridiculously fake. :)

Doesn't that depend on the type of blood, oxygenated or de-oxygenated?

I'd have to watch it again, but if the said blood had been coughed up, then it should be brighter as the body hasn't used the oxygen yet.

Hereditary 4/10. I'm gutted as was so looking forward to this. Not much happens for well over an hour and by then, they'd lost me. Can imagine it was creepy in the cinema when it did kick off but I was laughing at a couple of scenes. The 4 goes entirely to Toni Collete because she's awesome.

Les Miserables

If Moulin Rouge showed that movie musicals can still be exceptionally good, Les shows why they're mostly not. The film has none of the power of a stage show and merely feels faintly ridiculous. High production values and a glittering cast aren't enough to save it.

5/10

Ghost Stories 6/10.

Started off very slow, first half hour nothing really happened. Must admit didn't see the twist until it happened but put the earlier events in a new light. Not sure it will be worth a repeat viewing.

Kind of a grimmer Jacob's Ladder or Paperhouse, though both those probably slightly better as you don't nod off waiting for something to happen.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

8/10

Great film, certainly deserved the accolades. There were a few scene changes that bugged me, which leads me to believe I may have watched a different cut to the cinema release maybe. We'll see.

The Matrix on the new 4k hdr format.

Still a good 10/10 for me. Had it for a while but just haven’t felt the want to watch it until last night as I’ve seen it so many times before.

Excellent on the OLED in 4k and hdr brought it out to a whole new level. Really liked it.

It was from an animal that had been shot. Watch it again, it's just so hilariously red it's comical. :) It's a minor gripe in a very good movie though.

A lot of hate for hereditary on here.

I know it's quite a slow burn and the ending can polarize opinion, but 4/10's? Seriously?

It's a very atmospheric film and an engrossing watch. I'm guessing it just wasn't what some people were expecting.

It gets at least a 7/10 from me.

Upgrade

Very good film, especially given the budget.

Recommended!

8/10

Just finished this myself, really enjoyed it.

I thought Fisk was a good bad guy, but wished they had had another actor, he kept reminding me of Kip from Napoleon Dynamite and it got annoying :)

It was pretty formulatic and i guessed the eccentric River Phoenix lookalike kid had orchestrated the mugging. I was also wrong, in that i thought his wife was involved in some way, ie at the beginning he said he had no idea what she did at work and so i thought she was maybe part of some military side of the opposing company/Cobalt trying to steal Vessels tech or something.

But I did not see STEM been the main brains and tbh i was a little bit disappointed by this. The 1st 3/4 of the movie was 80's cheese and had me thinking of Knight Rider and KITT, Streethawk, Automan etc what with the computer doing its stuff. I enjoyed this and thought that this maybe the pilot to a TV series, but by the end it got a little too dark for that.

Good movie.

Tomb Raider - 7/10.

A good origin story and some great set pieces (boat, waterfall etc). A shame Walton Goggins wasn't given a more meaty role/more screen time as i think he is a great actor.
