What film did you watch last night?

Skyscraper - 6.5/10

Not bad for a Die Hard style stuck in a building with terrorists film. I did watch it cus Dwayne was in it otherwise I probably would have passed on it.

Mom and Dad

The artsy/indie weird sound effects and score were overdone, but the premise was fun.

Loved the twist with the grandparents, hadn't even thought of that aspect :D

6/10

Couple of horror films over the weekend:

The witch at the window 5.5/10
Paranormal activity ghost dimension 4.5/10

Hmm, the first one was ok, although not particularly scary. Second was expecting to be pretty awful but wasn't quite as bad as expected :p

Edit: also watched The tall man 5/10
This really wasn't a horror film at all. Just a very average thriller with a twist.

3 Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

what a brilliantly bonkers film. sam rockwell really does play the part of being off his rocker really well (maybe too well!) easily an 8 or 9 out of 10 for me......had that darkly comic feel of a cohen brothers film which put me in mind to rewatch....

Fargo

as above, just darkly funny, sharp and uncomfortably entertaining. been a few years since i watched it but holds up pretty well. William H Macy and Francis McDormand are just gloriously oddball everytime they are on screen. must look and see how many times the words 'oh yeah' are used in the script!

Three days of the Condor
decent enough Redford spy flick. Was remade into a series recently based loosely off this too.

Sphere
meh sci-fi alien theological romp, good cast though.

Two absolutely fantastic films there :)

Both easily 8/10

Season 1 of Fargo TV series is also great.

tau - 4/10 - netflix film with gary oldman as an ai - really weak and more like a student film (at least the writing anyway).
the purge - 5/10 - meh, a pretty boring tale with a stupid concept - i thought they would at least have fun with it, but no.

I actually thought Tau was worth a watch. Not great or anything but an ok scifi flick if you like the genre.

Those endless purge films have never interested me though I have to say.

Disappointing nights viewing...

1922 - Netflix adaptation of a Stephen King short story. I imagine the short story works a lot better than a full length film. It was dark and gripping but like so many King adaptations the setup is always better than the payoff and you are left wanting. 6/10

Fargo - Heard so much about it over the years but never got around to watching it. I was 20 years too late I think. You can see it's influence on the TV and film that came after it. But in my opinion the successors did it better and so this felt tired even though it was my first viewing. Watching it now it's difficult to get your head back into a place where this would have been fresh and clever. 5/10

I watched wonder on a plane. Wife was very confused when she looked up from her movie to see me a complete blubbering mess. :D

I went to the cinema with my wife to see it. Good god, welling up tears at multiple moments and then full on streaming by the end. Don't think I could go through it again but a must see. 8/10

Ladyhawke

I never saw it when I was younger for some reason. Enjoyed it a lot. It's not quite Princess Bride but it feels like it's cut from the same cloth. I did wonder why it wasn't called Manwolf though.

7/10

A Quiet Place - really interesting dynamics throughout. Very different to everything out there.

I thought it was incredibly well written, didn't leave any horrendous questions throughout (often answering them as I'm thinking them), and excellent acting.

9/10 for me.

Totally agree, easy 9 from me too. Brilliant film. The screenplay for it was written by John Krasinski, as well as directing it and starring in it of course. That guy is seriously an up and coming force in Hollywood
