What film did you watch last night?

Children of Men

Not seen in ages, and saw it was on Netflix. Brilliant movie, I like how well its been made, scenes are very gritty and realistic and edge of your seat stuff from beginning to end.

Need to watch this again. Saw it in the cinema and found it alright but nothing special. It gets rave reviews from everyone, though, so I suspect I didn't appreciate it properly.

Actually I found I enjoyed it more on my 2nd viewing, I remembered most of it from the last time I watched it, but it seemed a lot better on last nights viewing.

Also it reminds me of the The Last of Us game but without the zombies.

I bought this on DVD for £0.50 whilst on holiday in Cornwall last week, I laughed so hard. I doubt I'd find it funny twice but as one off I loved it.

I struggled with the premise, I mean they took "roofies" which wiped their memories, fair enough I guess, but then they still managed to party on 'til the early hours. They should have fallen to sleep much quicker, like with that tiger in the bathroom.

Bohemian rhapsody.

Saw this with the missus last night. Was absolutely fantastic. As someone who was born one year after live aid and never got to see the real Queen live it was great to watch. Lump in the throat during the Wembley performance. I think the critics panned it because they wanted a Freddie Mercury biopic whereas we got a Queen biopic.

Much preferred it to that Gaga movie (which the critics loved) but then again I am not a fan of modern music in general.

Brilliant :D

Stick around. I would love to hear more of your movie reviews!

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms (2018) - 4/10

An interesting mix of ballet, fantasy adventure, period drama and panto that doesn’t really come together.

The special effects and artistic style are a visual treat full of colour and magic, and the classical music is great and used to good effect.

However, the story has been modernized and now includes far too much additional stuff – unnecessary characters, barely referenced realms, fight scenes and ballet all in quick succession.

I found it slow and boring at times, with its relatively straightforward plot and sloppy editing, and wondered who it was aimed at – younger audiences would be scared by the menacing monsters, older children wouldn’t be interested, and adults would probably enjoy the original ballet more!

Awesome movie. That single take scene is jaw-dropping.

I spent many years in awe of that scene in the belief it was a single take, it's actually about 4/5 takes cleverly edited together. Regardless though it's an amazing sequence.

There are a few other single tracking shots in the movie that are overlooked as well, the coffee shop scene and the car ambush.

There is an episode of True Detective S1 where the final 6 minutes are a genuine single take with no cuts or edits, it's astoundingly good...as is the entire first season tbh.

2001 A Spacy Odyssey

First time ever watching this and for the most part I went in blind. All I knew about it was that "HAL turns on the crew" - that was it.

I thought, especially for it's time, it is incredibly well shot. Excellent use of different camera angles tricking you into thinking they were in zero mavity. Visually there were a couple of tell tale signs that it's from 50 years ago but overall, it looks great.

The movie itself...the first 35 minutes were confusing as I was expecting a space movie but got the beginning I got. I found myself repeatedly checking to make sure it was the right movie and not something else. The movie is an incredibly slow burner movie and the pacing felt off in many places. Ranging from incredibly incredibly slow to an alright pace back to slow with more confusion! But thinking about it over night, I believe this was entirely the purpose to completely throw the viewer off.

And the ending...well, I don't mind admitting I understood almost nothing of it. The only thing that was apparent to me was Dave losing the concept of time as we saw him get very old very quickly. The rest...well, I think I'll Google it.

Overall, despite the large doses of confusion I am glad I watched this and can see why it's considered a classic by many :D

Years ago I tried watching this film but gave up pretty quickly.

Recently was persuaded to give it another try and I'm glad I did. My movie tastes have changed over the years and I'm much more keen on slow burn / atmospheric films.

This is a classic film no doubt.

I nearly gave up as well, I was really tired from work. It was tough going at times. Glad I watched it, and interesting how it left me feeling and thinking.

Talking of long takes, try out Victoria. Single take for the whole film! Very impressive, not bad film either. I think Woody Harrelson made one in London also.

You had it right the first time round... It's impressively made and there's some alright shots but the characters and pacing are secondary to the films 'artistry'. Typical Alfonso Quarón.

There's an episode of 'Haunting of Hill House' where it ONLY has long takes. Very impressive stuff and really helps build the suspense for a few of the scarier moments.
