What film did you watch last night?

Not really a film but I watched the final series of House of Cards /sigh

Personally I kinda wish they hadn't bothered, losing spacey was always going to be a massive blow but so many reoccurring characters have simply disappeared that it still leaves so much unresolved. Robin Wright does her best to try and fill the void and to her credit shes a very good actress, however her character simply isn't main character material and was built to be unlikable for too long to pull it off.

The ending sucked massively too.

Overlord (2018) - 8/10

A relatively standard World War II movie turns into something special in this dark and brutal story of Nazi experimentation and cruelty.

Straightforward story, but with plenty of horror, tension, gore and violence.

The special effects and action scenes are superb, really bringing you into the action with its loud explosions and effects, and the acting is good too.

It does fall into a number of Hollywood tropes, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

The Cloverfield Paradox - 3/10

Imagine Event Horizon, but take away everything that was good about it.

I'm not really sure why it I'm being so generous as to give it 3 points, to be honest. JJ Abrams really is a specialist in utter dross.

The Girl on the Train - 6/10

Intriguing - I wasn't really sure where this film was going until the end. Very bleak.
2001 A Spacy Odyssey

First time ever watching this and for the most part I went in blind. All I knew about it was that "HAL turns on the crew" - that was it.

I thought, especially for it's time, it is incredibly well shot. Excellent use of different camera angles tricking you into thinking they were in zero mavity. Visually there were a couple of tell tale signs that it's from 50 years ago but overall, it looks great.

The movie itself...the first 35 minutes were confusing as I was expecting a space movie but got the beginning I got. I found myself repeatedly checking to make sure it was the right movie and not something else. The movie is an incredibly slow burner movie and the pacing felt off in many places. Ranging from incredibly incredibly slow to an alright pace back to slow with more confusion! But thinking about it over night, I believe this was entirely the purpose to completely throw the viewer off.

And the ending...well, I don't mind admitting I understood almost nothing of it. The only thing that was apparent to me was Dave losing the concept of time as we saw him get very old very quickly. The rest...well, I think I'll Google it.

Overall, despite the large doses of confusion I am glad I watched this and can see why it's considered a classic by many :D
I will probably get be burned in critic hell for this but... 2010 was a much better movie. It's the canon sequel, but a completely different type of film.

Not by me you won't! I haven't seen the 2010 movie (and didn't know it existed until now) but I'll give it a watch. Many films are classics for various reasons, and not always because they're good.

The original blade runner for example. I struggled to stay awake when I rewatched it some months ago in prep for 2049. I don't think it's anything amazing like many make it to be.

Horses for courses :)

Go watch 2010 now.

I remember watching 2010 (I'd already seen and enjoyed 2001) and thought it was excellent. I was a young teen at the time and, for some odd reason, I fell in love with the long-sleeved white t-shirt under a blue shirt look that Schneider wore and copied it for months. :)

After watching 2010, read the books. Really fleshes out the story IMO.

An extremely underrated oldie....I found Christopher Lee in very good acting shape in this movie. I had been meaning to watch it for a long time and last nite, I finally got down and saw it all the way thru :)

I would have said 'but even worse' but I agree. I think 3/10 is generous

I never really knew it existed as film or assumed it was some straight to video/tv sequel. however I LOVE the book of 2010, a lot more than 2001, so I might have to check it out

The Thing (1982...yes...damn film is 36 years old now , you wouldnt believe it when watching it though) is on tv tonight, so I havent watched it today as yet...however, based on the sheer fact that its my favourite film of all time, I will make a prediction rating of ....

10/10. :D

Its a well made film, probably haven't seen it in 15 years but i'd imagine it still holds up. The space walk sequences are very well done and remember a big thing made about special effects at the time back in the 80s.

Brilliant movie, scared the hall out of me when I was younger, still holds up now and scares me as a 42 year old :)

Widows (2018) - 9/10

An engaging movie with hard hitting drama and strong acting from all of the cast.

Although a heist story, it focuses more on the other elements involved – politics, corruption, greed, revenge and empowerment for women and black Americans.

It’s unhurried in its delivery, and the style works really well as it doesn’t detract from the story.

The plot has some good twists and wraps up nicely at the end.

The Night Comes From Us

On netflix
Indonesian film, brutal with very high body count and some good choreography
Worth a waste of a couple of hours
Doesn’t really go anywhere though

Amazing movie, ranks up there in my top 5 at least. The techniques used in that movie were unparalleled at the time, and beat most of today's CGI with one arm tied behind it's back.

The sequel wasn't terrible either, and the game was reasonable.

DUN DUNNNNN..... DUN DUNNNNNN..... :D
