Nvidia DLSS 5 months on-a win or fail?

DLSS will be a fail if Nvidia cannot produce these massive GPU dies with RTX cores in the future. DLSS is massively reliant on the ability of the RTX cores to perform the de-noising operations for both image quality and frame rate.

Another post that just does'tt understand the difference between RTX and DLSS.

DLSS doesn't touch the RTX cores in the slightest. they are completely separate and independent technologies that have absolutely nothing to do with each other, and zero hardware relationships.

100% agreed. It really does need work.

Knowing Nvidia they will throw buckets of money at it until it works whether it's worth it or not. Right now it has absolutely no place being that simple resolution scaling does everything better.

I am not sure if it's worth their time to even bother trying to make it work better.

The selling point for me was Ray Tracing and I am impressed thus far, especially in Metro. DLSS is very underwhelming to me and it is something that does need that money pit thrown at it. I hope they do in truth, as I preferred the FFXV demo with it on to off.

Yup ray tracing while a bit limited now will definitely come into its own, DLSS could be forgotten about and no-one would care though.

DLSS has absolutely nothing to do with RTX. It doens't touch the RTX cores at all. I understand your confusion because Nvidia marketed the 2 features on the smae new hardware, but they are entirely different.

DLSS uses the Tensor cores to accelerate the DLNN inference. It does this just fine, the Tensor cores in Turing are extremely powerful. the upscaling does take a few millseconds so more tensor cores would cut this down but it wouldn't make a difference to image quality.

The performance of RTX is an enitely different debate.

I have no confusion, I know how it works. Both DLSS and DXR (aka RTX) performance is poor.

Well, then you are just flat out wrong.

The issues with DLSS has absolutely nothing to do with performance.

Of course it has. If it had more time or more silicon then it could work with a larger data size, which would in turn produce a better result.

I was referring to the non CUDA cores of which there are two types, I couldn't quite remember their names so I just called them RTX. My point still stands though, Nvidia are doing the processing for DLSS using specialised cores which are not used for typical graphics processing operations. Costs die space and the results are not particularly good in their current form.

Nvidia have a long road ahead with DLSS, it will take a lot of processing power to get to that next level of detail to match the detail levels of upscaled images. I don't see it being worth it on 7nm unless they make an absolutely giant stride in architecture, because of how much of a premium die space at 7nm is in comparison to 14nm. Consumers have already shown they don't want to pay current prices, which simply does not leave Nvidia with a lot of room with their future architecture on 7nm if they want to retain profit margins.

I think we need a bit of a laymens recap....

1. DLSS is still work in progress. It's new, its going to have teething issues, but I hate the way it was sold. I cant even run it with 3440x1440.
2. RTX is still work in progress. It's new, and I think personally it was overused at first. BFV is gorgeous with it, I've not seen Metro yet, but I think RTX will end up a winner.
3. We have got to push technology, without at least trying new tech we will never have advancements.
4. nVidia have always been heavily involved with devs when it comes to new tech. I think they are amazing at supporting devs. Huge thumbs up from me.
5. The cost of the cards is nothing short of a disgrace.
6. Most of the hate comes from AMD fanboys or people that cant afford to buy.
7. The owners themselves know nVidia ****** up this round, but I still believe they will get 1 or two things right in the end.

@D.P.
If DLSS has nothing to do with RTX then why can you not run DLSS alone?
This is what confuses me as the original list of supprted games at 20 series launch had games with dlss only (e.g.hitman 2) yet this does not seem to be the way it is being rolled out. Has it been scrapped for these games now?

Can people not like DLSS without being called a fanboy or poor? christ...
No! :p

I personally think that you do not need to be poor or an amd fan boy to dislike DLSS, you just need to have eyes :D

My stance is, this is first gen stuff, lets wait and see what they manage by the time the 3000 series comes out next year. Saying that, I am happy to laugh at Nvidia in the mean time, as they over promised and under delivered with the 2000 series so far. Oh and ridiculous pricing...

That's fine except how many times Jensen said "it just works" about RTX and DLSS, yet clearly DLSS doesn't work.

1. I do agree with how nvidia announced this, my biggest complaint about DLSS is this.
2. I do disagree some what, RT is released and deserves to be rated on what is available.
3. Agreed if done correctly I.e not locking down there API etc I can get behind RTX because it's just using Microsoft DirectX API
4. I wouldn't disagree but at the same time nvidia have been know to work of some of the worst PC games when it comes to performance. Meanwhile Games Amd work along side get high praise for PC optimisation.
5. Agreed even Vega 7 is shooting over my budget I like to pay £500 is my sweet spot.
6. Don't be silly, Nvidia is getting the right amount of stick here for DLSS mostly and rightly so. So nvidia fanyboys rip into amd software advancements. I can afford the highest GPU nvidia make if I wanted to but am not stupid enough.
7. Ray tracing, will improve but the question is by how much till the next cards come? What is the worthwhile turn right here? 5 games?
DLSS is already a failure and I honestly can not see them bring it to the level they sold it. When you failing against simple randers resolution dropping its dead in the water.
Damage is already done.

True.

He also said "The more you buy, the more you save!". The only person here that I know who may have believed him is Kaapstad who said he was not interested in Turing then rushed out and ordered more than one :p

Methinks it was more than one, I mean when has Kaapstad ever bought only one card. :D
