What film did you watch last night?

The House with the Clock in its Walls

OK, so this is limited within the confines of a family friendly ookie spooky flick.

Absolutely brilliant, haven’t enjoyed a film like this so much in ages. Great mix of weird, funny, silly and adventure. Pretty creepy in places too!

For what it is: 5/5

First Man - 2/5

Was really looking forward to watching this film but it didn't do it for me at all. Found the story very slow and I didn't care for Armstrong or his colleagues. So disappointed.

Alien (1979) 4k at the cinema, been something I've wanted to see on the big screen most of my life. One of my, if not my all time favourite movie.
Sooooooooooooooo jealous! :(

It Follows (2015) - 2/10

It takes a special kind of talent to make a movie about a terrifying and malevolent supernatural force boring, but this manages to.

The concept is good – the constant fear and unease of something that’s always out to get you, something which can strike at any time, but in this case, it doesn’t hold up to any scrutiny or make a very engaging film.

It does have an interesting and artistic camera style and setting, which builds up an uneasy atmosphere, but it’s never scary or tense.

The acting and character’s aren’t great, the creature itself isn’t menacing, and the basic story and slow pace just makes it boring.

Couldn't agree more - very dour and slow paced imo and as you say none of the characters were particularly likeable!

Also they seemed to shoe-horn the actual space part into a really short portion at the end - not even any detail of the return to earth!

It's almost as if it was all faked and no one had any experiences to draw from....... :D

Silence of the Lambs - 10/10
Hannibal - 3/10
Red Dragon - 8/10

Some observations...

SOTL is such a masterpiece of a film. One of the few films I watch again and again without getting bored. The characters are just so deep but with, actually, such sparse backstory. I’ve clearly been a dope because it was only on this viewing that I really took stock of all the horrible sexism poor Clarice was subject to, which just made you really want her to ‘win’.

Hannibal is just a horrible film. It feels so utterly cheap - constantly relying on references to SOTL. The scene with the uzis is just ridiculous.

Red Dragon is no SOTL but very entertaining it it’s own right and definitely the most interesting villain in the Hopkins trilogy... particularly when you see the relationship he has. Really dark. I feel it gets unfairly panned for ‘more of the same’ but on its own two feet, very good.

As for the Hannibal TV series, I’d say series 1 was intriguing, but it then became laughably stupid and by the 3rd series was so dumb my eyes felt that they had been assaulted by the Red Dragon himself.

You should try and catch "Manhunter". Red Dragon is basically a remake of this film (ie the second adaptation of the book Red Dragon), but I think Will Peterson is a better lead than Ed Norton. It also doesn't have the Hollywood gloss of the second film.

Watched The Machinist again, great film. Highly recommended.

Looking for something else now, pretty much open to most genres. I just feel like watching something I can get immersed in, but not sure what.

Not a film, but check out the Deathnote TV series (animated) - that’s a real head twister at times and very immersive. On Netflix. Avoid the film!

Concept is a genius schoolboy stumbles across a book that can kill people if he writes their name in it. The show is a game of cat and mouse between the schoolboy and the genius detective trying to understand what is going on :)

Happy Death Day - 6/10. Interesting spin on Groundhog Day, but the film wasn't sure what it wanted to be. Horror? Comedy? Sci-Fi?

Liked the movie, dragged a little in the middle, but definitely worth a watch.

Cheers for the suggestion, I'll take a look later on.
