Fortnite players to become millionaires

One of the parents (kids mother) was on the news, saying how she'd basically taken her child out of school so he could put in 8+ hours a day on Fortnite.

It's... well, it might be a sound decision financially for a while, but I'm not sure how good it is for the kids.

Effectively it's a full-time job by that point. Or an outright addiction. Or both.

Basically his future is going to be "Cyber Olympian" or whatever silly title you want to apply, and if he doesn't make enough money to live off that, doesn't seem to be much of a Plan B.

I guess tho it's no different to (non-e-) sports stars or other extremely driven occupations where it's expected that the top stars will have been in training from a very (very) young age. You don't really get to have a Plan B if your parents are pushing down a path from age 6 or whatever.

I hope he wins it as opposed to someone like ninja or tfue who have already made life changing sums of money from it. The skill gap between a lot of the players isn't all that great from what I've seen, and end game does have luck involved.

Screw plan B he is 13? What a load of tosh. You can study or train to do anything at any age.
He can do anything he wants come 21 or whenever he is burned out/too old

If you say so. But pulling your kid out of school to be a pro gamer?

I guess that doesn't sit well with me. I would imagine it's going to be setting quite the example for other kids who will want to do the same thing.

e: In before "just jealous" or whatever. No, I'm really not. That would be my idea of hell (I never liked competitive online play, I'm a SP/co-op only kind of guy).

They’re just monetising what most on this forum spent doing for free/fun. I can’t stand fortnite but if I was able to earn a living for all the time I invested in Modern Warefare I wouldn’t complain at all. As for the short lived careers, all you can hope is that they have smart and decent parents who’d either invest the money wisely or keep it locked in savings until the kids are old enough.

Pulling them out of school is a little extreme but as mentioned before, you can educate yourself at any age. If you can make enough money to secure a house for life and have some savings stashed away, then why not go for it? You wouldn’t even need that great of a job if you don’t have to worry about rent/mortgage for the rest of your life.

So you'd be happy for your 8,9,10,11 yo kid to be playing Fortnite 8+ hours a day?

If you thought they could make money from it?

They’re developing a skill that could be used later in life for financial reward. Is it any different to letting your kid play a guitar for 8 hours a day?

I don’t know why tech youtubers use it in benchmark vids either. It’s like CS, it runs on a bloody potato!

Perhaps it might have something to do with it being the most popular game on the planet, and aligning their content with it might be good for clicks?

I still can't wrap my head around how such a ****** game became so big.

To be fair, its not.

The game engine is the foundation of some of the best looking and playing games on the market right now, and the game itself has some crazy features, the artwork is second to none... I could go on to be honest but saying its a bad game outright is just grossly incorrect.

And i don't play the game.

Not to mention the reason most mothers/fathers buy computers for their children is to play this one game... If they know it runs well then its a good purchase.

If they were good enough why not.

Simply being popular on the internet can unlock so many doors. Youtube/Instagram and the like might be saturated now but the smart ones and early 'celebrities' on it have moved on to bigger and better things. The 5mins of fame obviously doesn't last but what you do after it is what counts, align with big brands and you'll never struggle for work.

Pretty much this, it's no different to any traditional skill.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but uniquely with pro gaming they're at their peak in their teens. By their mid-to-late 20s they're starting to lose it :p

The skill is mostly muscle memory and sheer speed of reactions. When your reactions slow down you've lost your edge.

I would be surprised if this skill translates well into any other sphere of enterprise.

I guess this really depends on if you're just looking at the financial angle and nothing else. If money is literally the only consideration, then why not let your kid be a drugs mule for 8 hours a day, if they could make millions doing it. I'm sure you wouldn't, btw. It intrigues me that people say a young teen playing games for 8 hours a day is perfectly acceptable, so long as the money rolls in.

It intrigues me because this is basically saying that the money is all that's important. And that playing games all day every day is fine if it's profitable. Even for minors of school age. (Adults can make their own choices on how to pay the bills).

This took place in-game whilst players are mid-session, they have world changing mechanics worldwide that active at set times and alter the game..

Their skins and animations are phenomenal quality wise, they have hundreds of animators and designers working flat out, more than any other game in history.

Well I did play it, and it's absolute gash. Both in looks and in gameplay.
