Road Cycling

One thing I have seen is the way the Wahoo app has reported my cadence is odd, average of 47 but Strava and rwgps report 74, I’d say 74 is low as a rule but it was a slower ride but why the difference if the data source is the same?
Mine is all over the shop on my ELEMNT, but is not shown the same/uploaded to Strava. I originally put it down to the cadence reported from my PWM, so replaced it with a dedicated sensor and it was better, but still displays odd spikes... And I guess troughs to even things out...?

Strava cadence: https://www.strava.com/activities/2543264718/analysis I guess it's all smoothed and excluding zeros (worth checking your ROAM setting as there's one in there to ignore cadence zeros and one for power). 86rpm avg with only a couple of spikes, max of 188 lol.

ELEMNT app shows avg of 87rpm, loads more troughs and a few more spikes with a 196rpm max (so not the same as Strava):

with a HT2 type system the crank does apply preload to the bearings - I guess if there's slightly too much it could cause relatively quick wear
I'll go out on a limb and say hardly any BB's replaced in the UK are from wear, the vast majority will be due to water/dirt ingress... Certainly those with cartridge bearings anyway! ;)

Mine is even more messed than that, Garmin sensor - the second gen one

First long solo ride for a while today. Usually get bored after about 3 hours of my own company unless on the mtb, was aiming for 80 but stomach was a bit unsettled so got home bit before that.

Went by surprisingly quickly, did my efforts mid ride and still had legs to keep up the pace for the hour and a bit home.

Still have noisey drivetrain due to the cassette aside from the three largest gears (which are joined together).

Ultegra R8000 11-28T. I have removed it from the hub, greased the hub a little more and refitted it, went up to 50nm instead of 40 to see if makes any difference. The spacers between the gears are metal same as sram, but noticed that the gears have a little play back/forth until you do the lock ring up then they have none.

Hmmm

No riding for me as I've seen to have picked up a neck problem causing cervicogenic headaches. Every time I rotate my neck to the left, it causes a momentary throbbing headache which fades away when I turn my head back to center. Had it for over a week, it ******* annoying.

After finishing a short ride on Saturday I was walking out the house to meet up with friends for a barbecue and I rolled my ankle  scraped my other knee at the same time so although the weather is supposed to be crap this week I'll probably only get some tentative cycling indoors so I don't aggravate things.

What noise are you getting?

Slight rattle as if the gear tune wasn’t quite correct.

It’s fine in the biggest three, totally silent. Rattles in the smaller individual gears which have the metal spacers.

It’s 100% the cassette. I have been using SRAM and had no problems but changed to Ultegra as a bit cheaper and more ratios available (11-23 for TT).

It’s fine on the trainer and with a different wheel and was fine with a sram force cassette.

I use etap with an Ultegra cassette without any problems, there shouldn't been any compatibility issues as they should be interchangeable?

What wheel is it?

11 speed cassette or 10 speed?

10 speed 105/ultegra/dura ace have a 1mm spacer behind the cassette from the days gone by where shimano made a 10 speed specific freehub body.

I assume the noise is the cassette moving on the hub a little, but there is no side to side movement, was a little forwards/backwards on the hub splines which was removed when doing the lock ring up.

It’s 11 speed on white industries t11 hub, literally removed SRAM, installed Shimano.

couldnt hold back the urge when i went to Brompton junction in London, ended up walking out with a B75 (basic 3 speed model). i figure i need to commute with it for the next 150 days to get my money back lol

Positive its an 11 speed cassette as I'm pretty sure shimano don't do an 11-23 in 11 speed.

Got a photo of the back side of the spider?

This is a Ultegra 8000 11-28. 100% positive.

I got a Ultegra 6800 11-23T at the same time and installed that on my disc wheel.

I might ride it Tuesday night if the weathers OK and see if it is any different, but as I haven’t changed anything (removed it, checked it was all orientated correctly, added some grease and reinstalled) I can’t see how anything would be different.

It could be the spacers rattling as the splines on them don’t match the hub, they are a generic spacer that doesn’t matter on the orientation, and it would just rely on the lock ring to compress and hold them in place.

Top one is 11 speed ultegra with the black spider and no recess for a 1mm spacer.

Bottom one is a 10 speed ultegra with silver spider, a recess for the 1mm spacer you can see. Also has an 11 speed lock ring which caught me out for a few minutes.

Ignore that it's an 11-28.

I read 11-23 further up. I'd try a 1mm spacer on it to give it more pressure on the spacers between the cogs.

Finally the stars aligned and I was able to get out for a 'club' ride. My 'club' is a local shops saturday social (previous club) which has degenerated over the years into a group of 5-6 of us who ride together frequently. Shop doesn't lead the rides, just sometimes gives us a route and coffee/tea at the finish if we ride it. Many times there will only be 2-3 of us, so we'll ride over to one of the many other groups rides and go with them. Same happened on saturday (only Steve & I out). We went over to ride with the 'Gannets' who are generally a north of hereford club supported by local breweries. Although they've been going for many years (guy from my work used to ride with them as a Junior and he's now 85!). I'd only ridden a few times with them before. They all tend to be older guys and saturday was no different. I'd probably dragged the average age down by a good 10+ years! :D

Quite a lumpty one! Strange social ride - guys leading seemed to be aware of splits but didn't ease up. At times they seemed to even push the pace on, then be waiting 5-10 minutes up the road. Nobody seemed to mind - but I guess they all knew each other well so it wasn't even mentioned (other clubs I ride with tend to either ease up regularly, or split the group into 2). With 12 riders out it was quite a mixed group and I did several large closes when the group got split more regularly later in the ride. Utterly emptied myself on the last with 3 riders on my wheel into a headwind - didn't bonk but glad when we got held up at some temporary lights. 10 mins later when it came time to ride home I realised I was done for - couldn't even hold my mates wheel on the way home! Really should've eaten more in the later part, but running low on fluids I didn't. Whoops! :D

Mine is even more messed than that, Garmin sensor - the second gen one
Wow that's messy haha! Mine was similar when I used the cadence from my PWM, on the head unit (Edge 810 & ELEMNT) I'd occasionally see 0 cadence, but more frequently see 225 on there lol

Good stuff, amazing weather for it all weekend here. Kinda gutted I only got out for 1 ride, but it was a huge one for me as I'd not been out on a club ride in months.

It’s fine in the biggest three, totally silent. Rattles in the smaller individual gears which have the metal spacers.
I didn't think they where metal? All my Ultegra 6800 (and 5800) cassettes the little spacer things have been what feels like a black plastic. They have little nub things so only fit in 1 place and stay there. If your's don't is it possible they're moving around/moving out of line/getting distorted and causing your issue?

My other half's Tiagra cassette had 1 cog which seemed to be deformed, you could see it 'wiggling' the chain out of line causing chainrub. I pinned it down to one of those spacers which had worn, but the cassette being a Tiagra is a bit different anyway - they're held together with a pin through the cassette which holds it together. That was loose and I figure how there was enough movement to wear one of the spacers. Even after I sorted it (replaced spacer), the cog was slightly warped, but didn't cause any rubbing.
