Road Cycling

Hope those of you who rode RideLondon all completed it ok. My Strava news feed was mostly full of disappointment yesterday as hear they closed Box Hill? Couple of guys in the pre-7am waves got up, but none of the later ones.

'Across the border' Sportive was on here - cycle out to Pen-y-Fan, hike up it, then cycle back. How's this for an effort though! I've no idea if Ed managed the walk immediately after that though haha :D

Was fine for me. I had a less than optimal wave with 6000+ riders ahead of me so I felt like I was mostly solo. Had the odd rider tag on from about 10 miles in, they gave courtesy turns but could tell they were blowing their doors off and they soon did so first 75 miles was pretty much solo just overtaking lots and lots of carrots. Leith was a bit busy, maybe overtook 50 or so riders up it and had to give a few calls for people to move but was just cruising up it so wasn't too fussed. I'm not surprised if people crash on the descent there, surface has been horrible in places for years. After Box, started to find the odd few riders to work with. Occasionally they'd catch a larger group and just slow down to join them so I get bored and try tease some people out... rarely did anyone take up the offer. Got in a little 3 up that worked okay from Wimbledon which helped to manage the headwind return.

Overall fairly happy with 4:08. Would have been nice to be in the front wave.

Another reason why I'll never bother with those high profile sportives. Saw quite a few IG stories of people stopped on the hill, or elsewhere on route.
So many inexperienced riders who aren't comfortable riding in big groups/near other riders.

Yeah many pictures on Strava of the congestion and that's even from riders setting off in fairly late waves so think they where diverted before even getting to Box.

RideLondon is renowned for it, but then to any outsider it's 'the ride' as it's on TV so they assume every cyclist wants to do it and aspires to be 'one of them'. I've been asked on 3 separate occasions today if I did it, when I'm fairly negative they always ask why not! #bore-off! ;)

Guy I work with and his crowd smashed it (amazing average for them as usually 15/16mph avg kinda riders). But 5am start! At least they got to do Box! :)

Of the 3-4 contingents I know of, around 15 riders all seem to be wearing Amstel Beer kit in pics. When Dave is back in work I'll find out why! Free beer may have me asking to join them next year...! ;)

To be fair I've always enjoyed the little sportives around here. 100-200 riders or such. Even the big one 'The Wheelie Big Cycle', which attracts all the nodders, is still only 500-600 riders. It raises a huge amount of money for a local cancer charity, but then got cancelled this year due to poor organisation ending up with a route clash with the 'two ton tour' also running the same weekend. Annoying as it was a weekend I could've ridden (it normally clashes with my other half's birthday!).

'Fairly Happy' with 23.8mph avg 'mostly solo' over almost 100 miles... So modest! ;)

Mega ride mate, congrats & kudos. Made up for missing the Dolomites? :(

It was 100 miles :p There's a fair amount of tunnels so GPS would have disconnected.

Dolomites has proper mountains (urgh) ... Surrey has speed bumps :)

I was 7:05am and got up Box no probs. Leith is way more sucky than box. Amazed at the number of people walking up and or taking a good breather at the top. I guess, as they say, it's not a race, and if you're in a group,a good cuppa and bacon sandwich is worth the stop. Also amazed at the sheer overestimation of people's ability when choosing a start pen. Wow... I wasn't hanging around though so probably a slower pace would have had you caught up on box. I was caught up for 2mins in Richmond Park and the last 10miles back in was stop start with crossings. Crossed in 5h20 but rolling time was 5.12. Happy with that. Some nasty incidents en route too.

I distinctly remember having about half a foot of road width to play with in some places on the first dual carriageway out, 3 lanes in places! You'd think the first half hour of pens would realise keeping left might be a good idea.

Big thumbs up for Wahoo CS. They actually tried to deliver my replacement mount on Saturday, but no one was in (that's after reporting it Friday morning!)
Picked it up from the post office this morning. So now I have a spare for the winter bike :)

Anyone seen anything much better than the Pinnacle Laterite 1 in the "about £400" segment of the market? i'd normally source something used but my friend is a tiny little girl and stuff in that size takes ages to come up

Did quite a short but progressive effort on the way home last night just to see what my legs where like and really like the numbers/feelings even when fairly fatigued after saturdays smash.

Need to get some FTP/threshold sessions done and should carry on this fitness. If I can avoid getting ill! :o

To be fair I've always enjoyed the little sportives around here.
I meant to expand/extend this by saying that I really need to 'cross off' one of the big national sportives, just so I can say I've done/experienced one more than any actual aspirations to do one. For me riding with friends is more important, so highly likely I'll only do one if one of the groups I ride with decide to. I'll happily ride 4-5 hours solo to really do the Sportives I 'want' to do (if nobody else is), but to do one of the busy/expensive/popular bore-fests it'll have to be a social thing.

Only big rides which really excite me where The Velothon or L'etape Wales (a large part of it was to one of the main 'Welsh sportive'), but with the Velothon no longer then maybe L'etape has to be put on my calendar for next year... Then I'd always laughed off the Velothon - as why go all the way down to Cardiff, to ride back up and ride The Tumble, which I can ride to from home...

To be fair, as I've 'lost' the two main/easy aims of 100 mile local sportives this year I planned to do (one cancelled & I was ill for the other) it's looking unlikely I'll even do an imperial this year. Unless I commit to the Autumn Epic which I keep going back to... But really don't know if I'll have the endurance/fitness for it.

Haha yeah my work colleague said. He was short on mileage too, so I'll say exactly the same to you as I said to him... 'If it's not on Strava...' ;)

Found out why they where wearing Amstel kit. One of the group works for Amstel/distribution so got them all kit through his work, and beers at the end for them all! They got 2 pints 'free' - one for finishing and one for wearing the kit. That's me sold lol :D

Great time. Anything less than 6h is good for that, guessing the lack of holdups helps the most! What was your avg? Speaking to the guy from work he was disappointed with the feed stops, all they had where bananas, high5 tabs, high5 gels and high5 energy bars. Nothing 'normal'/natural like cake/flapjack etc? He certainly didn't mention bacon sandwiches as I'm sure he'd have loved one lol. Yeah lack of sensible penning/overestimation of abilites really sounds like a problem. Damn hard to solve though!

Are there not signs and marshalls on route telling slower riders to keep left?! Need it on the climbs looking at all the congestion pics! :o

Mega CS! Do like a success story/pleasant surprise from CS! Maybe I'll chase them up about something I've been meaning to ask about... Replacement HR strap for my TICKR. The current must be 5-6 years old and the elastic has nearly totally gone out of it! Unit is bombproof!

Nothing Planet X for the warranty/spec or a Triban or such from Decathlon? Or Canyon, then get a LBS to build it up/bike fit it?

It's been a while since I browsed bikes in Halfords to see what you get and no local Evans'.

Planet X have stopped doing the RT58 as a complete bike otherwise it would've been ideal. London Road starts at £600

Halfords have this: https://www.halfords.com/cycling/bikes/road-bikes/boardman-slr-8-6-womens-road-bike which is basically the same and only competitive because it's reduced

Go Outdoors have this https://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/15901368/calibre-loxley-ladies-road-bike-15901368 which is a bit cheaper but won't take guards and a rack (which is a nice to have for her)

Decathlon is this: https://www.decathlon.co.uk/rc120-road-bike-grey-id_8554264.html#v2733282 it's nice but our nearest decathlon is about an hour and a half away

chain reaction have a vitus, but it offers nothing the others don't for the money and you can't fondle it first

the pinnacle also has nice touches like 165mm cranks on her hobbit size, and will take guards and a rack too. https://www.evanscycles.com/pinnacle-laterite-1-2020-women-s-road-bike-EV299416

+1 for hobbit size :D

~£100 more would get this Trek with a better complete Shimano/Saris crankset, possibly cartridge bearing BB, tubeless ready rims and 28mm tyres. Unsure if has rack mounts though (has 'hidden fender mounts'). Although 50cm seems the smallest they go, with no mention of crank length.

That's nice, but i'm not convinced it's £175 nicer, and that extra £175 is probably a push too far#

big brand tax definitely in effect there.

I'd have still ridden RideLondon98 :) I rode 27 miles back after, got lost in all the road closures because obviously lots more cyclists still finishing. Forgot to try plan a suitable route, eventually ended up on the (open) A4 which was a little sketchy.

I was actually on an Amstel Ride Together team entry too (though I don't know who else was in my team besides one guy and hadn't realised we were most likely in the same pen, would have been good to work with him).
I got sent an email saying I can go in VIP Amstel area for free massage and two free beers but when I got there they said the bar didn't open until 12PM (another 1.5 hours). Couldn't be arsed to hang around for crap beer, even if it was free!

Yeah, but I guess in the thick of it people miss the signs and/or think there's no one faster behind. Apparently they even had a "walk on left" sign on Sawyer's hill in Richmond Park (a mere speed bump).

Haha s'cuse my brain fart, I'd only seen it as ~£100 more!

Haha speedbump. Dave mentioned 'Newlands corner' which was a good hard climb, yet totally unsignposted!? Box hill barely worth calling a hill, yet loads walking it. They'd got 80% the way up without realising they could've big ringed the whole thing. He enjoyed Leith hill far more.

He did say the organisation was ok for signing on/start/gridding/pens but logistically it was a nightmare. Getting from their hotel in the morning was easy, but a 3-4 mile ride on mostly empty roads at 5am, but took them nearly 2 hours of diversions and closures to get back there after the finish! They hadn't thought the route there & back would be any different. Whoops! VIP was good he said, as one of those he rode with didn't drink, so he had 4 free beers haha. He said they got in VIP entry early, as did many others and there was hot food put on by Amstel. But didn't think there would be much left for the later riders. Ahhh Amstel Ride Together. Subsidised place or some kinda charity placing? Always heard so many horror stories on how much it costs to ride.

Good on him. He was always the most sensible and logical of the TG presenters. But damn he looks old & grey now lol

Newlands Corner is pretty tame too. A very short mildly steep section but the rest is almost almost false flat. https://veloviewer.com/segment/5002047

The descent is kinda fun usually as it's got solid white lines and cars hold back as you're doing 35-45mph but I hated it in this event. Too many idiots on the top tube literally weaving across both lanes with other riders in front/behind. I had to brake a bit to avoid them and then of course shot past on the very slight rise after.

Had I known there was free food too I might have been tempted to walk round but honestly didn't feel super hungry so it would have had to be good! Amstel Ride Together I did was for a mate's clubmate's work's team entry - free for me :D

Average was 19mph. When I hit the first 20 miles in an hour I was still feeling really fresh and thought 5 was on at one point but the few stops and the hills just dropped me below. Still, as I say, they say it's not a race :D

Peaked 46mph which always feels like good fun :D

I can see, Newlands doesn't look hard?! Not sure what Dave was talking about then as well within his capabilities and wasn't ridden slow, but I guess it's the first real gradient after several miles of gradual elevation gain since Ripley? - https://www.strava.com/segments/4994137

@Thomas. PLease. bossing it through there, looking at times he was a minute faster than the Pro peloton! :o #prolife

The guys I know where lead most of the way by this guy Neil (who sorted all their Amstel extras out) who seemed to be on a mission - so they sat on his wheel most of the way around lol https://www.strava.com/activities/2589664754/segments/65058844984

Great average. 5 would've been a good target, maybe next year!? Most of the others I knew did it in around the same - fantastic weather and day for it, if you could avoid the holdups! One guy I know did it super slow (almost 6h) for some reason, but his hill efforts show he had the legs to be riding with the front guys. Yet even with a 6am wave he got held up on Box.

EDIT: While we're on the subject. Laughed so much at Alex Dowsett winning KOM and his interview/comments haha. 'Career highlight'! :D

I did a bit of a double take when I heard that on the commentary. At the start he seemed to get agitated with the delay and went off with his teammate around Bushy Park, tailwhipping as he bunnyhopped down the bank :D
