**** The Official Google Pixel 4 Thread ****

The screen thing is a really difficult one. I’ve generally gone for a bigger screen with each passing generation, but I have to say, I sometimes yearn for a smaller phone myself now. However, these things are expensive and you’re generally going to be stuck with it for a while so you really want to make the right decision.

The way I’m starting to think is that a big screened phone is still fairly small in reality (e.g. for watching videos, reading magazines or long articles etc), but much harder to handle, and that’s becoming something that’s becoming more annoying, particularly in the age of gestures and whatnot where your thumb is quite often dodging around the screen.

I have a large screen tablet and am quite often at a computer so the case for having a huge phone is diminishing for me... although with the Pixel you’re probably going to have to plump for the larger screen if you want a good battery life...

I've never really understood using phones for watching films or TV shows anyway, they're just not a good size for it regardless of whether you've got a fairly small screened phone like the s10e or a big phone like the Note 10. I don't regularly travel on planes or trains for work, but if I did I'd definitely get a laptop or tablet for watching stuff. As far as I can see, the only benefit of using a phone is that it means you don't have to carry more than one device at a time.

Some of the slating comments just come across as I can't afford it so I will diss it ... Come on

The storage arguments are lame. Everything is cloud now. I don't have a single file on my phone other than a few pics from WhatsApp that I don't want backed up

This is your usage, not everybody’s. What does it cost Google to add another 64gb of storage? $5 or something?

Edit - I don’t personally use lots of storage but i change my devices before it becomes an issue. I also don’t like being nickel and dimed, which is what Google are doing to buyers of the Pixel 4.

The link says nothing there now. What was it saying?

Anyone who spends any amount of time travelling requires local storage for music and videos / games. Great that you don't need it but you are not everyone.

I travel loads for work. Drag films from pc to google drive. Mark down load offline on pixel.

Netflix, iPlayer, plex do the same. Delete when done. It's not a deal breaker and won't change.

Google's view is cloud based

The amount times I have no internet is getting less and less.

Just to add, anyone who bought the clearly white which showed up as 128gb for the 64gb version. This has been rectified and will now show the 64gb.

You must live in well covered areas, I dont. I live in Notts and travel to Berlin and Austria every week for work and cloud storage just isnt a viable option.

Berlin has more dead / 2G spots than I can mention, Graz and Vienna are ok but also have significant areas that are weak or no signal.

Many airports, particularly Manchester have useless free Wifi and the cellular is so slow it may as well not exist.

Cloud storage as the primary means of access is simply not an option for the masses, those that dont live in large towns or cities and is not palletable as we all dont dont have unlimited data packages.

Why do I want to be forced into the option of purchasing additional and recurring fee cloud storage on a £1k phone?

Clearly this is simply about Google intentionally gimping handsets to try force recurring revenue in services and I don't know a single person who uses cloud storage for anything other than backup storage.

I wonder if the screens will be different again...
The Pixel 3 screen is said to be poor in comparison to the Pixel 3 XL screen. It uses an LG screen while the XL uses a Samsung screen which looks a lot better.

Personally I would prefer to get the Pixel 4 because of the size, but if they've done the same this time around I would have to go with the 4 XL

I've ruled out the iPhone. I've been checking out specs and prices and my memory is now fully refreshed on the reasons why I've never owned an iPhone.

I'll hold out for reviews to see if there's any major flaws on the P4. The "free" Chromebook feels like a bribe and I'm wondering why Google felt it necessary to go with such a gimmick. Later in the year, when the price isn't hampered by the cost of the laptop, then a Pixel 4 for around the £500 mark will be my best choice... So long as the reduction in screen size from my P2XL is not an issue.

Only reason I haven't ordered this is that I'm waiting for the inevitable price drop in a month or so. Got bitten when buying my 2XL at launch, only for it be about £150 cheaper about 6 weeks later!!
This, got burned by Google last year , pre ordered 3XL only to see it plummet in price soon after release. I can see this happening with this too. First time I'm not tempted having had exclusively Google/Nexus/Pixel for years. I suspect many others will feel the same.

The thing is. Will it be £150-£200 cheaper at black Friday ? Because that's what you get now if you sell the chrome book.

So you could argue that now is the cheapest it will be for a long time. As I suspect it will be more like £50 to £100 discount at black Friday.

I think for me the most annoying thing about newer Pixels is the camera bump. When the first one came out they made quite a big deal out of the no bump on the back. I guess it doesn't matter too much if you put it in a case but I quite like to use my phone without a case

@_Jimlad_ You can't guarantee you'll get £150-£200 for the Chromebook though. If eBay etc get flooded by people trying to sell unwanted Chromebooks you might not get what you expect, or even sell it at all.

Personally, I might even keep the Chromebook, as I said earlier, it would make a good couch surfer, and maybe even something my little girl could play with down the road.

I am still in two minds about ordering one, but I really want the XL not the regular one due to screen size, batter etc., and that is IMO too expensive. So, do I swallow it up and get a free Chromebook and be happy or do I wait it out in the hope that BF will bring better deals.....?

Also, looking at The Tech Chaps unboxing, not even a headphone adaptor in the box? lol, Google really cheaped out on this one.... :|

Nearly but didn't? Or have you been using both?

Nearly. Stuck with my OP7P as I was waiting on the P4. Would have been a little silly to go 3a with the 4 on our doorstep I guess.

One thing that did strike me as being very very useful was that voice recorder / transcriber thing. No idea if other apps exist which do the same but from a work perspective I can see myself using it a lot... Hmmm business case for a pixel 4 as work phone coming up!

Same. How much I'll actually use it, I'm not sure. How locked is it to a Pixel 4? I assume you could port it to another device, or is there a certain chip allowing it to work in real time so well? One use case, I sometimes have to sit and listen to webex's, but also often get interrupted. If I can leave my phone transcribing it, it could be handy?

totally useless for when out hiking with a hood/scarf up around your face.

And wearing gloves I guess. I would be happier pulling a scraf down than removing gloves. We also don't know how much face it will need at this point. I know on my Mate 20 Pro is had great face unlock and I hardly ever had to use the FPS.

Had a play about with them in cpw, couldn't get the gesture to work at all.

MKBHD's video concerned me when he said it only worked 10% of the time... To some it's a gimmick, but I'm often lying in bed having to skip forward through podcast adverts and this will be the easiest way yet to do that.

Who's forcing you? Google is a cloud based company. This is a cloud based phone. If you don't like that... don't buy it... maybe even don't moan about it on forums, but that might be asking too much :)

Or it's environmentally friendly? I wonder what percentage of people use/need the adaptor? I've never used one myself. Ever.

Working out best way for me to get XL. Looks like £45 (£36) a month on ee with 20% discount seems best. Only 1gb of data but my other ee contract has 120GB a month and you can transfer data over which I would need to do each month.
