Anyone been on the ketogenic diet long term?

I did that carb backloading fad for awhile, which was supposed to be keto.

Did I get lean? Yes.

Did I absolutely obsess over everything I ate and every calorie and generally did I go a little mental? Yes.

OP you might want to rename the thread to “I’ve been on keto for years and it’s excellent” - the thread title is slightly misleading :p

I tried it out of interest. But it basically means you can't eat out our are very limited in choice. It drove the wife mad.
I loved starting my day with a coffee with butter in it, dinner usually salad with cheese and fatty fish, olive oil dressing.
Tea some meat and green vegetables.

I don’t understand why others would get mad at a diet you choose to follow, how does it affect them?

The longest I've done keto for is a couple of months, found it a bit miserable as I missed fruit, beer etc. It also gave me bad guts and I thought about food a lot.

With regards to the Western diet causing western diseases, I think this is more true in terms of snacking and constantly being in a fed state rather than all carbs being bad.

I used to Keto when I trained, now only really two weeks before a holiday to lose a stone of chubby and get the muscles beach ready. Love keto, works amazingly well... I just love food more :D

What would you personally say is better- Keto or Paleo?

From what I can see online the only differences are that Keto cuts out a lot of fruit and natural sweeteners whereas Paleo cuts out sugar free sweeteners and dairy?

When I was first told that I needed to avoid gluten and wheat for good and cut out potatoes and dairy for a while, I really struggled for ideas. I tried paleo for a while and it was fine but it did start to annoy me because I was cutting out other foods that I wasn't sure I actually had an issue with (I.e. rice).

That said years later after coming off Paleo, I feel like my digestion has got slightly worse again and other issues found on tests in the past still exist. I do feel better when I'm avoiding dairy though and I mainly stick to low sugar, alkaline forming fruits.

I've heard people complain that paleo is too meat heavy and full of carbs but I never really found that. I didn't follow a specific Paleo meal plan, I made my own and used the paleo concept as a base guideline. (I mean, who has time to faff about cooking sausages for breakfast every day :o:p)

I’ve been doing Diet Doctor for about three weeks and lost almost a stone. I’m quite enjoying it as I’m eating more vegetables than I’ve ever done. Only thing I don’t like is some of the recipes are a faff. I’ll be glad when I can just get into my own routine with stuff I can choose.

How long does it take before you start to feel the additional benefits like more energy, less hunger? I’m lying in bed right now feeling knackered and my belly rumbling. I think I must be more in starvation mode than ketosis right now.

My peeing strip indicator suggests I’m at 4mmol/l which is a bit too high, it should be 1-3 so do I eat more carbs to bring it down a bit, I.e. more nuts and veg?

Fads are fads. Just exercise portion control and make sure calories out > calories in and you'll lose weight.

There's no such thing as 'starvation mode'.

Heheh, I could take that advice at face value and eat 1 donut for breakfast (212 kcal), 1 packet of Oreos for lunch (729 kcal) and 1 block of chocolate for evening meal (549 kcal). Ooh look. Calories in = 1490 kcal. I bet I'd lose weight.

Potion control will work to lose weight in general but keto can help lose more body fat as mentioned in the link posted earlier

we will all produce ketones when burning body fat

you probably would lose weight if your bmr was 2000kcal but you would more than likely end up with reduce muscle mass , a fat belly and diabetes heh

You would. It wouldn't make you any healthier but you'd lose weight.

Aye, the way I look at it - I'd rather be thin and have a heart attack on keto (perhaps due to too much saturated fat) or be fat and have a heart attack because of Type 2 diabetes. At the end of the day, you have to really do what's easiest for you. This low carb lark I'm finding pretty easy but Christmas will be the ultimate test when people start handing out choccies left, right and centre.

At the end of the day, there are essential fats, there are essential proteins, there are no essential carbs.
