I took that approach as I am waiting on either a UDM Pro or ideally a new router only device so I can use a CK2 or one of my local servers for the controller.

I have the VM 500 service and also have inter VLAN routing for 9 CCTV cameras (recorded 24x7) and the USG 3 copes fine as long as QoS and IPS/IDS are disabled.

On the 19th I'm due to get the Virgin 500 package and wanted to get a USG or wait for a UDM Pro.

I have my PC workstation and server/NAS box connected with a SFP+ DAC cable which works great but was wondering like you say about mapping the SFP+ ports on the UDM Pro to both be switched without disabling the 1Gb WAN port.

You can only map ports on the same SoC controller. The WAN ports are on one SoC and the Switched LAN ports are on another SoC. so you could only software map them and that would be slower than treacle.

If you do get a USG-3P then, so long as you don’t turn on QoS or IPS/IDS it will handle Virgin 500Mbps no problem. Personally, I’d just run the VM in router mode and wait for the UDM-Pro early in the new year.
 
Understood, and thanks everyone for the advice, I will give the VM box a go then and save the cash for the Pro. Unless I can get a used USG-3P to have a play with :)

I figure I'll just get a cheap APC or something but if anyone has any particular recommendations they'd be appreciated. Will be in a lounge so I guess I'll be looking for one that doesn't buzz or hum too much. I saw one with regular sockets which might be handy.

Have you had your UDM arrive yet? Any initial thoughts if so?
 
Anybody know where I can get the last/latest v4 of the Unifi Controller software for Windows. I am supporting an upgrade from 4.8.18 but all the v5 installer upgrades screw it completely, so hoping upgrading to the last of the v4's first will help but can't find it it.

Yes, arrived yesterday. Unfortunately as I've got a few days away coming up I probably shouldn't set it up and leave the missus with a new network so any observations are purely cosmetic.

(It's both smaller and heavier than I'd imagined, very dense, and has an interesting soft touch feeling exterior.)

As expected it came with an EU IEC C7 plug, that's all that was included in the box except a card with a link to download the manual.

Will hopefully get to set it up end of next week.

This is exactly what I did.

Thankfully the cable will be largely hidden so the fact it's not quite as white as the UDM itself or the cable that came with it won't bother me!

Just placed my order on EU store as well, the free shipping offer nailed it for me. My fibre line is 400mb/35mb but with my USG-3P with IPS running I only get 130mb/35mb throughput, the UDM seems to be maturing nicely, so I thought I would take a punt. It probably means my USW-8-150 and cloudkey are going to be redundant but we will see what happens.

I sold my CK2+, USG and an AP to fund this. I’ll keep my US-16-150 as it supplies 10 ports through the house and PoE to my other 2 APs, soon to arrive CCTV cameras and a PtP link.

I had my shipping notification this morning.
 
I think I might pull the trigger on some UVC-G3-PRO cameras. I currently have the UCK-G2 and will upgrade to the UCK-G2-PLUS with a 2TB drive.

Any known issues restoring from UCK-G2 to the UCKG2-PLUS? Also, any idea on drive compatibility issues? As I recall there were issues with the SD cards.

Got a despatch text this morning, my UDM is being shipped via UPS. Once I get the system running solidly I will sell my usg3p, uap AC lite, 8-150w switch and my cloud key, that should cover a decent proportion of the upgrade costs.
 
what is go good about this UDM?

I am thinking of replacing my router. However I have the issue of I ideally need to replace my nanho hd with an in wall HD as it's wall mounted. or alternatively put my AC Pro where the nano HD is then use the POE out on the AC Pro to run a cable and mount the nano HD on the ceiling in the spare bedroom.

Does the UDM have the range of an AC Pro?

The UDM is

  • 802.11ac Wave 2 (which brings additional 5 Ghz channels and greater range)
  • 4x4 MU-MIMO for 5 GHz throughput 1.7 Gbps
  • 802.11n for 2.4 GHz
The UDM will have greater range than your AC Pro due to being Wave2

Ubiquiti don’t make any claims for range on the UDM. They haven’t published any radiation charts for it and while the HDnano is a match for the AP-AC-LR the UDM doesn’t have the same antenna array as the HDnano and in my testing I would say the UDM isn’t as good as the HDnano in terms of range.

if you want RANGE then the AP-AC-HD and AP-AC-SHD are the current range kings but then you’re talking double the money.
 
Generally it is it accepted that 4x4 Mu-Mimo has greater range that 3 x 3 Mimo.

We were comparing the (potential) performance of the UDM vs the AC Pro not the HD Nano, but just comparing the two on paper

UDM Antenna Gain -

5 GHz - 4.5 dBi

(1) Dual-Band, Quad-Polarity Antenna

2.4 GHz - 2.8 dBi

I see the differences between the two antenna types and given that the UDM is inverted compared to the Nano HD, I understand that they are likely to have physically different configurations. But given the improved gain on the UDM's antennas, particularly with beam forming, is not likely to have greater range ?

Looking for some advice

I have a full Unifi network within the house couple of switches, all rooms have Ethernet, 2 x Wi-fi access points

But I don’t have ethernet in my garage, which I would like to have to install CCTV etc..

what’s the best solution to extend my coverage to my garage, can I use a switch and a Wi-fi access point to access the main house network over Wi-fi ?
