US kills Iran's General Soleimani

I used to work with an Iranian who was over here on a work visa for a year. He was doing everything he could to get citizenship so he didn't have to go back.
I'm sure you'll find quite a few Brits doing that in Europe next year too...

Same for this guy. I'm sure he can now claim his life would be utterly forfit if he was forced back now.

Until they need healthcare I guess. Then they'll be back.

That's just a price you have to pay then isn't it ;)

Anyway, don't you think it's a bit obvious that an Iranian that has left their country isn't all that supportive of it's current state? Not that most Iranian's support it, I don't really know, i doubt it but i wouldn't cast speculation beyond that and get into trouble like the US did in '79 when they didn't see it coming.

Would love to know what the support is actually like, but then again that would mean having a government that cared about that.

I've worked with a few. All loved their homeland but hated the regime with a passion.

This matches my experience too. I'd guess Persians who want to come to the UK are a pretty biased sample but it seems clear the theocracy is not popular.

People mock Europe democracies but I can't think of a better place to have been raised and live than Western Europe and the UK/Nordics are some of the best. We can do anything* and enjoy it.

*Anything not being an ******* obviously.

The leaders of these theocratic countries are abhorrent.

It might help if said democracies stayed out of other's countries. Though largely it's the US that's doing it, Britain and France were there first. Iran specifically just wanted to run it's own affairs without corruption emanating from the British control of the Iranian oil company. That seems like a reasonable position to me that was attacked vociferously by the then barely operating British Empire, who simply blocked Iran from trade.

In retrospect it might have been better to just give them what they wanted.

We don't just get involved for fun. It's because somewhere along the line intelligence has spotted a threat.

After decades of enhancing the issue in the first place. I mean it's irrelevant now, but it's nice to keep perspective as to not repeat mistakes, though that seems pointless as no one bothers.

So maybe it's just all pointless and conflict is essentially unavoidable.

Yes and no. Blocking trade causes the population to hate you as it can be spun to be indirectly account for why there's no food in the shops etc etc. A non democracy can't effectively vote out they are just told to burn more flags and hate harder.

Trump is a loose cannon because he's a do-er not a negotiator and threats are his way. He's a bully, but it works. I hope it keeps working without a retaliation. China is going well.... It's a bloody weird few weeks coming up. If Iran don't retaliate then they look like dogs. If they do though.... Something will kick off properly.

China is going well? Not sure US farmers feel that way. North Korea still has nukes. We'll see how Iran evolves, but the future will retrospectively decide that, not the current zeitgeist.

Must admit, I’ve been having a laugh at some of the WWIII tweets tonight :D
I don't think it will lead to WW3, it most likely will lead to young American soldiers dying, and quite possibly terrorist attacks here which is a concern.

Iran would be a nicer country if we had kept on running it i bet.

Is it me or is the title of this thread a little "click baity?".

I haven't read the original lost or any of the comments as the title puts me off. I'd rather just come here and voice my distaste of someone using click bait tactics to lure people into commenting.
