NVIDIA ‘Ampere’ 8nm Graphics Cards

Sorry, yes, I meant better than Turing for performance per £. NV seem to be top of their game. While RT is no longer new tech, unless AMD can get near them they're still going to price GPU's high but Ampere should be better performance per £ than last gen. Smaller node should allow a nice jump in general performance and 2nd gen RT should hopefully see a giant leap.

If it's price/performance ratio is better than Turing *on the level that Pascal was better than Maxwell*, that might be acceptable. (Turing's price/performance isn't a great starting point though)

Wondering what sort of performance increase the 3070 will have over the 1070. Remember paying about £400 for my 1070 on launch week. Suspect the 3070 will be considerably more money :( nvidia's pricing is just out of control these days.

The 3070 will be a minimum of £550 IMO.

With Turing, the names seemed more like distractions than descriptions.

I think the 1070 upgrade question would be better asked from the price point rather than the nomenclature.

How much of an upgrade will a £400 Ampere card offer over the £400 Pascal card? As consumers, we should also remember that we are comparing two generations with a lot of time between them.

Quite.

It's all about price to performance measured against prior tech.

As the pound has gone down the pan it's best to stick to dollars when comparing previous generations.

I highly suspect you will be pretty close with that estimate.

£400 is about as much as I'm prepared to pay for a video card though. So I'll stick with my 1070 until that price gets me a worthwhile upgrade.

If it’s not, something has gone very badly wrong.

Pre Turing, a 60 series should be up there with the 80 series of the previous gen.

I’d want a sub £400 2080 equivalent otherwise what progress are we making?

Hope your right, planning on upgrading my pc early next year and will be on a low budget.

I think the 'smart' thing to do is going to be to wait until AMD launch. If they have anything competitive we'll know because nvidia will either launch some new variants or drop their prices about a day before.
+1 You'd be daft to pull the trigger until you know what AMD have to offer. Launching early is sure fire way to hoover up sales and we haven't had this sort of potential competition in the GPU space for 5 years.

This suggests to me that Nvidia are worried. Getting Ampere out the door in every possible guise asap before RDNA2/Next gen consoles. Why the rush...? Unless......
And just how many times have we heard this before? :). Folks like to talk about rush jobs when it come to NV and I don't quite get why as never seem to apply it to the competitor.
In fact, we were told Turing was going to be short lived too as they will need to release something better. Nearly 2 years on still waiting for next gen..... I doubted it but even I said release by Q2 2020= wrong :D. So that's nearly 2 years since NV sacrificed outright performance to bring RT to market and not only have they not released a new gen sooner, but they're still way ahead. 2 years is about normal for NV

I don't think NV have much to fear from consoles. They always offer a sub-par experience.
I like AMD but close competition from them in the GPU gaming space? Unlikely at this time, at least at the top end.

I think that is a bit harsh though there will be those of us who dont like AMD, or had bad experience with AMD drivers so there will always be early adopters. Personally I will wait but being daft is a bit hard on people who dont want to buy AMD. It will be good for people to buy Nvidia for us that want to sit back and see if Space Invaders or Asteroids appear.

Dont call them daft ! Call them brave ! Think of them as testers for the rest of us !

Traditionally they launch in September I dont see it being rushed. More likely they want the cards out there ASAP for a certain game that is due to launch November which will probably sell a lot of cards both AMD and Nvidia.

I will compare launch prices in dollars. Doing it in pounds is unfair as Nvidia or AMD have no control over the value of our pound.

This is common knowledge since months. AMD are not aiming to compete with a 3080 Ti, and they don't need to as that is not where the money is and they know full well they can't do reach that level of performance in this gen. They are aiming for the 3070/3080 market and below and if they manage to put out performant parts for cheaper than Nvidia they they are really going to take a lot of market share this generation.
