Legal aid should not fund asylum legal action.

The money spent in this area should be diverted to access other areas of legal help for citizens of the country.
Why not both?

We could reverse a decade of cuts to legal aid, and fund it properly, so that everyone has access to the legal system.

I wouldn't call £36 million pound "staggering" when referring to government finances.

They are spending at least £500 million getting people to eat out in restaurants...

500 million to stop a economic collapse bit different.
If the Government didn't spend the money then those people would be out of a job, pushing more out of other jobs.

Doing this maybe a lot cheaper in the long run than allowing a few sectors going bust.

Economic migrants and the fake asylum that can really be verified.
Without legal redress, we are relying on bureaucrats to decide whose asylum application is 'fake' and whose is legit.

It seems to me to be just the sort of area that should be decided by a court of law in the marginal cases where there is a judgement ot be made.

Pretty sure that £36 million pays a few salaries too, son.

they should apply via the correct channels or be deported.

They should track down who are buying the boats being used and end this.

We should adopt the same policies as France so that the migrants don't feel it's worth the risk to their life to cross the channel in an overfilled glorified dinghy, I'm all for freedom of movement but it needs to be done legally not illegally like the migrants are doing

How do you propose they survive then? They aren't allowed to work, which is another problem as that incentivises the slave market that we have in this country.
What I mean is they should only get basic accommodation, small subsistence allowance and emergency healthcare, no thousands upon thousands of legal aid.

In 2018/19 the criminal legal aid budget in England and Wales was 879 million British pounds, compared with 891 million pounds in the previous year. In the provided time period, criminal legal aid peaked in 2007/08 at just over 1.2 billion pounds, but between 2010/11 and 2015/16 it was cut by 314 million pounds. Civil legal aid has also been cut in the same time period, after peaking at 1 billion pounds in 2010/11, it fell to just 600 million pounds by 2015/16.

Immigration claims make up about 6% of Civil legal aid, approx £36 million a year.

Pocket change when the government has spend nearly 1 billion on PPE that never materialised.

Doesn't seem disproportionate or unreasonable to me. But of course is ammo for the Farage-likes.

I can think of other things they should crack down on:

This report provides estimates of fraud and error levels in the benefit system in Great Britain for the financial year 2018 to 2019.

The main points from the report are:

  • 2.2% of total benefit expenditure was overpaid due to fraud and error
  • the estimated value of overpayments was £4.1 billion
  • the net government loss, after recoveries, was £3.0 billion, or 1.6% of benefit expenditure

They said much the same thing a century ago, if there's to be a downfall it will be because there's nothing to save, not because of a nebulous 'foreign invader'.
