We could reverse a decade of cuts to legal aid, and fund it properly, so that everyone has access to the legal system.
Legal aid should not fund asylum legal action.

500 million to stop a economic collapse bit different.
If the Government didn't spend the money then those people would be out of a job, pushing more out of other jobs.
Doing this maybe a lot cheaper in the long run than allowing a few sectors going bust.
Without legal redress, we are relying on bureaucrats to decide whose asylum application is 'fake' and whose is legit.
It seems to me to be just the sort of area that should be decided by a court of law in the marginal cases where there is a judgement ot be made.

I agree, asylum seekers should not have access to public funds.
How do you propose they survive then? They aren't allowed to work, which is another problem as that incentivises the slave market that we have in this country.
Pretty sure that £36 million pays a few salaries too, son.
That too, which ever allows greater access and scope for British nationals.

We should adopt the same policies as France so that the migrants don't feel it's worth the risk to their life to cross the channel in an overfilled glorified dinghy, I'm all for freedom of movement but it needs to be done legally not illegally like the migrants are doing

Why not instead, rather than 'too'?
we don't have to persecute asylum applicants just because a political decision has been made to make cuts elsewhere.

What I mean is they should only get basic accommodation, small subsistence allowance and emergency healthcare, no thousands upon thousands of legal aid.

Immigration lawyers are the biggest crooks of the lot
Well to be fair it's hardly like they're just handing them money, it stays in the economy for the most part?
Doesn't seem disproportionate or unreasonable to me. But of course is ammo for the Farage-likes.
They're only allowed to charge about £50/hour for legal aid in immigration proceedings. It's not exactly a gravy train. My charge out rate was more than that as a newly qualified accountant.
