No, no.. its needed for the hard earned R&D and mythical things my weak argument is based on!

AMD need the extra money to pay for R and D for better coolers. Those fans were investing in the future of the company! Duh!
I hardly overpaid for My Powercolor 5700xt £338 from here ocuk brand new back in January, I'll admit driver issues for a bit, but all the optional ones have worked for me.
I wonder how much the cheapest 2070S was back in January, compared to the cheapest powercolor 5700xt I mean?

The RX5700XT was originally meant to be an RX680,but from what I gather,since the RTX2070 was so expensive,AMD saw a chance and did a little Rebrandeon.
Ooo. So out of curiosity how much more was the 5700xt at launch may I ask? I was late to the party in latest gen, as this system was only built as I had some spare student maintenance left over back in January lol.
So I'm calling it now AMD will do the same again to see if they can get away with it me thinks. But then I know a lot about nothing lol
Fully agree. RDNA 2 is going to a product of extremes: it's either going to be a monumental return to the top or an unmitigated disaster.

Well I suspect if it was an RX680 originally,it would have been closer to £250~£300 at launch?? IIRC,the RX5700XT was around £360~£400 at launch,so probably another £60~ £100 on top?? The Navi 10 die,is also relatively small,and close to that of the Polaris GPU used in the RX480.
The thing is I haven't seen such a quiet AMD launch for many years. Maybe as far back as AMD Hawaii or even the HD4000 series.
Nobody is entirely sure,what RDNA2 GPUs are being launched. We all assume there is a 40 CU version,and a 80CU version. But now there is noise about another version in-between that(based on XBox Series X GPU?).
For me,its less about AMD beating Nvidia,and more how they do on the technical level. Is RDNA2 scaling better with more CUs,using memory bandwidth better and more power efficient. If RDNA2 shows decent improvements and gets closer to Nvidia,then at least that means RDNA3 and RDNA4 should be competitive too.
There's also the suggestion that RDNA 1 hit power issues preventing the launch of bigger models (notice the lack of 56 and 64 CU models to match Vega). The 40 CU unit was always intended to be the top-end Polaris-class card, but when bigger units weren't viable, combined with the underwhelming performance of Turing, AMD saw an opportunity to bring in some more money and compensate for the skewed product stack. If their intended top card of the entry level range outperformed Nvidia's mid-range card (of which it did: 5700 XT beat the 2070) then there's plenty of leeway to reposition that card up to the midrange and charge accordingly.
It's a real shame RDNA 1 didn't pan out if these power issues are true, Nvidia would've only held the performance crown with the RTX Titan. Missed opportunity
Yeah, people need to remember that when looking to AMD to save the day, they are quite capable of branding and over charging shenanigans, they want to make as much money as they can get away with, ye know? its our job to say yes ok we get that but don't take the ####.... like we failed to do with Nvidia.
The 5700XT, now that AMD have a handle on the drivers its turning out to be a properly fast card, the gap between it and the 2080TI has shrunk significantly since launch, its stepped up a full Nvidia GPU ranking.

I think their obsession with margins - or at least obsession with trying higher margins - misses one very important point: the R&D is a sunk cost, so they really need high(er) volumes as well.AMD might overcharge again, like they have for the past 5 years
Now, due pride of HBM ("we helped design it, so we shall use it" even if we barely have much business (GPU Compute and high-end laptops) where it makes sense), Fury could never be a high volume product.
It always struck me as very odd that in all the years since buying ATI, they never adapted any GPUs to use their - or later GF - as the foundry. No matter if the process wasn't as good for GPUs as TSMCs, since GPUs are so parallel a slow but wide design could have worked. In those days of outright ownership or WFA, sure it would have been way better to have lower margins on some GPUs but keep the foundry busy.

Comparing one overpriced card with another?
We don't really know how fast they are, especially in RT. If RDNA2 will lag behind with RT ON... that's gonna be problematic, to say the least.
At around £350 i don't think they would be overpriced, that's what i paid for my R9 290.

I think that's fine. Equivalent 2070 Super is £100 more expensive.
Around £350 to £400 for high end cards was not out of the ordinary 6 years ago.

Its a shame,and I hope they do try and look at the success of Ryzen,and realise disruptive pricing can work. They are trying to play Nvidia's game,by their rules and it won't work. AMD has done well when its done its own thing IMHO.

Only if they try to price too high relative to Nvidia. This is why I think they are waiting for Nvidia to launch their GPUs first.
The 5700XT was paper launched at 449 Dollars but was reduced by 50 Dollars a couple of days prior to actual launch day.
