I don't wish to start an argument with anyone, lets all keep it on topic

Just here for the discussion with liking minded folk :)

Desperate to find out what that "hmmm" face meant from AMD!

I remember all too well the months leading up to the Vega 64 launch. Endless hype, then meh. I had cash ready, then saved my money. I so wanted Vega to be another 9700pro....

I am digging the fact that AMD adopted the fan dubbed name of "big navi" and stuck with it. My optimistic side of me thinks if they didn't have a show of force they would have dropped the name "big" and stuck with pushing RDNA2

AMD are providing a custom map for Fortnite branded with AMD tags.

17% more then a 2080Ti and that was a long time ago, if that is the case with Navi 21 then AMD should have a chip that can compete with a 3080, pair it with 16Gb of memory and price it sensibly it would make a lot of buyers think while choosing between the two.

Imagine, we buy 3080's, and the day after "BIG NAVI set to be 100% faster than RTX 3080"
Haha. The AMD boys would be having the best time of their lives if that ever happened. CAT and LeFuryOn will be like “I told you to wait, I told you, lol, hahaha, na na nana na na, burn!!!” Lol :p:D

Lol. TheFuryOne can be the cooler king for taking time in the slammer!

In all honesty, my response to all regardless of how Big Bad Navi Dog Daddy turns out will be "at least you waited, you're not a chump after all".

If Big Navi turns out to be anywhere near as amazeballs as napkin maths and extrapolation suggests, it's going to be worth the wait. If AMD totally screw the pooch (again) then at least you held off and made an informed decision before rightly moving to Nvidia. I will enjoy seeing multiple eggs on certain posters' faces should the former transpire, and it will be especially delicious to see the amount of mental gymnastics 4K8K will do.

Coreteks says AMD have got nothing to compete :o
I don't know what's happened to our Portuguese Vocoder recently. He's never been a hype machine and has always presented tidbits and speculation in a quite unbiased manner. But unless he truly knows something we don't, the recent Big Navi naysaying doesn't sound quite as impartial as it once was.

I am not the best example of an AMD boy as 2 of my last 3 GPUs were Nvidia! I kind of won one,and one was cheaper than the AMD equivalent! :p

I just think it's weird not to wait until both companies have shown their hands! Even Hardware Unboxed said it was worth waiting.

In principle yes 100% agree, and yes if you're rocking a 1080Ti, 5700/2070 or above you'd should imho wait for the right upgrade options etc.

In practice you have a ton of gamers on 900 series and 1070 - 1080 struggling with performance and a long history of supply shortages followed by price gorging. I don't want a new GPU in Q1 2021 when options are all out/available pricing settles down, VAT goes up and Nvidia start talking up the 3080Ti which could be a Q3 2021 release.

If AMD cant convince me there is something better than a 3080 coming this year, I'll gladly buy a Zen3 but pass on Navi this time and consider RDNA3 in a few years.... Its that simple from my perspective and I'd suggest a lot of others.

Its like madness on youtube for clicks, post any negative and you have more clicks than anything else.
In my experience this type dont serve any other purpose than money for clicks.

Well, amd do well, question is just the efficiency route or not as you can add more speed but also then add more power and heat along the way to either match or gain a upper hand.
Amd did not screw up.
I assume they may not have anticipated the price drop from nvidia killing their own brand Turing and creating buyers remorse as a 2080ti is worthless now for any resale.

Since they are about to launch Ryzen 4 the new cpu which I am buying which is the main focus for amd the cpu stuff and then to release Big Dog Navi they got a lot to plan to present this in a timely manner.
October 7 is the latest rumor for this.

I love napkin math btw

From a purely AMD-centric narrative, I can see sense in announcing the CPUs first, because I'm sure one of the central marketing points will be "we've taken the gaming crown from Intel". Throw out a few demos of the new Ryzen paired with a 2080 Ti beating the Intel numbers just to put the argument to bed. Then segway into "oh, that's with a 2080 Ti by the way" then run the same demos with Big Ass Navi to show the performance uplift. From there the slides can waffle on with 3070 and 3080 comparisons.

The trouble is, despite me saying to the impatient to just sit tf down and wait, they are correct in saying AMD must make some kind of announcement before 17th September.

I agree that navi could reach 3080, but... They have never had any ray tracing until now. Nvidia are on gen 2 rt cores.
If big navi is 3080 comparable it would only be in pure rasterization. You would be looking at sacrificing ray tracing for lower price, say 3080 performance for 499 or 550 but half the ray tracing chops

There's an embargo on Ampere architecture lifting today. According to Video cards on twitter just now.

"Block diagrams, some performance details etc." So they say.

I have a GTX1080 and game at qHD - I am hardly struggling!:p A GTX1080 is around RTX2070 level performance. If anything my Ryzen 5 2600,which was a stopgap CPU for me,is probably the next upgrade I want to concentrate on. I am still waiting for Zen3 news!

I am not saying to wait 3~4 months, but every rumour is saying October for RDNA2,and I have mates on RX570,R9 390,etc who are quite happy to wait. Remember the RTX3070 is still October, and even the RTX3060 is probably going to be later. Its mostly the high end which is launching now.

Plus I suspect there will be a massive price reduction on the remaining Turing and RDNA GPUs,to fill the gap beneath £400. So there could be some decent bargains there for people on older GPUs.

I just think it's weird not to wait until both companies have shown their hands! Even Hardware Unboxed said it was worth waiting.

It's not weird. Think about it, Waiting for Fury, waiting for Vega, waiting for Big Navi, no, wait some more for big Navi. remember before Vega launch? When the Tflops and bus width were leaked and people here did the paper napkin calculations and worked out it was going to be faster than the 1080ti. See how that worked out? Waiting for AMD hasn't proved itself to be the best strategy in the past. It's understandable that people are not convinced it will be different this time either.

Secondly, because of the all price gouging that goes on for months after GPU releases these days, Pre-Ordering has often been the cheapest way to get the card you want.

I hope AMD's RDNA 2 cards are fantastic and they have a great launch. That would be awesome. That would be the start, then next generation, if Nvidia release first, people will have a reason to consider waiting until AMD release their cards. A great card might not win them all they want this time around but it would set them up nicely for the future.
