AMD Navi 23 ‘NVIDIA Killer’ GPU Rumored to Support Hardware Ray Tracing, Coming Next Year

It's not weird. Think about it, Waiting for Fury, waiting for Vega, waiting for Big Navi, no, wait some more for big Navi. remember before Vega launch? When the Tflops and bus width were leaked and people here did the paper napkin calculations and worked out it was going to be faster than the 1080ti. See how that worked out? Waiting for AMD hasn't proved itself to be the best strategy in the past. It's understandable that people are not convinced it will be different this time either.

Secondly, because of the all price gouging that goes on for months after GPU releases these days, Pre-Ordering has often been the cheapest way to get the card you want.

I hope AMD's RDNA 2 cards are fantastic and they have a great launch. That would be awesome. That would be the start, then next generation, if Nvidia release first, people will have a reason to consider waiting until AMD release their cards. A great card might not win them all they want this time around but it would set them up nicely for the future.

I find people on forums are impatient, but then most are geeks or very dedicated gamers. Just look at the number who upgrade just before a major launch(like Ampere was),and then regret it which doesn't make much sense.

For the most part everyone I know in the realworld is waiting to see what is being released by both companies, because realistically its the tail end of summer. A number are sizing up whether the new consoles are worth it,especially as some have older PCs,which need to have the rest upgraded. On top of this I knew of a reasonable number of people who already upgraded in the early aspects of the lockdown as they were stuck at home or working from home,so probably won't be really bothered. Its why hardware sales during the early part of the lockdown bucked seasonal trends.

So AMD/Intel/Nvidia probably have lost some of their later year sales to people who pushed their upgrades forward due to the current problems.

They are not going to change out a 6 month old GPU or CPU,if it runs what they need to run fine. It's also summer, most people I know are busy being outside after months of the restrictions. Many are getting back to physical work,so don't really have the time,so gaming isn't a real consideration right at this very second.

Maybe when winter hits, but not quite yet.

In all honesty, my response to all regardless of how Big Bad Navi Dog Daddy turns out will be "at least you waited, you're not a chump after all".

If Big Navi turns out to be anywhere near as amazeballs as napkin maths and extrapolation suggests, it's going to be worth the wait. If AMD totally screw the pooch (again) then at least you held off and made an informed decision before rightly moving to Nvidia. I will enjoy seeing multiple eggs on certain posters' faces should the former transpire, and it will be especially delicious to see the amount of mental gymnastics 4K8K will do.

Well you can call me a chump if you wish, I already made the decision of going Nvidia this time around ages ago, over a year ago. Most people here did not believe me and think I am an AMD fanboy for some reason though. Lol.

Usually when someone implies I am a fanboy of either camp I find is because they are being defensive about their brand of their choice :p

I am not the best example of an AMD boy as 2 of my last 3 GPUs were Nvidia! I kind of won one,and one was cheaper than the AMD equivalent! :p

I just think it's weird not to wait until both companies have shown their hands! Even Hardware Unboxed said it was worth waiting.

I agree it is worth a wait. Unfortunately AMD did push me to going G-Sync some years ago as a 4K gamer. I remember waiting well over a year after freesync 2 was announced to buy a 4K version when I was after a new monitor. In the end a good offer came up and I ended up with a G-Sync one. All the 4K Freesync one’s at the time at 40-60fps vrr range. Well I drop below that many times, at least back then on AMD hardware so this monitor was a no brainier at the time.

Worst part of it all is, buying monitors is a lottery still. I got lucky with this one and don’t fancy going through that again. Only 4K monitors worth upgrading to now are about £700 and I don’t see the point in that as I would rather go OLED as a monitor next.

Chump :D

Seriously though, your logic is not what I've been ranting about as of late. The performance level you're looking to buy into is probably going to be much of a muchness, especially at the surprising price point Nvidia have dropped the 3070 into. I can see 6700 XT vs 3070 being neck-and-neck; raster performance is probably going to be neglibly different, 3070 will have superior RT, 6700 XT will be cheaper. Plus you're already in the G-Sync ecosystem with no viable alternatives, so that is a driving and legitimate factor to not waiting.

But your logic is not what others use, and they're the ones who just make me roll my eyes.

I have a NoSync(tm) monitor, because when I had to buy a new one,all the ones I looked at under £400 were a bit crap for image editing(nearly 5 years ago),and that was more important for me than gaming. Also I did realise at some point Nvidia would support adaptive sync,as GSync was only there because Maxwell didn't support it properly. Once Nvidia fixed it with later generations, they would have support.

I tend to buy GPUs exclusively on price/performance and compatibility with my mini-ITX system. I am quite happy to wait for both companies to launch,as most times there will be some adjustments in prices,or freebies given away, and I have so many games in my library,I don't really feel that pressured by the upgrade cycles.

I don't get it, why are people calling other people chumps for buying now? If a GPU comes available at the price you want, the features you want and the performance you want, why wouldn't you buy it? And waiting for AMD hasn't exactly worked out in the past.

And even if AMD has a great launch and has good cards, I can't see them been so much better that you would regret your purchase.

What I do find odd is that AMD didn't push to release first and make Nvidia react to them, not the other way around.

Its incidental really according to the current rumour mill you wont be able to buy now as there will be no stock. Xmas is what they are touting so by then AMD and Nvidia will be available. Reason being touted is the poor Samsung yields which makes me think any cards that do get sold will be subject to Space Invaders II lottery.

Good.... at least they are not sitting on their hands, this is the sort of thing they need to be doing.

This is the only thing that cvould work in AMD's favour if they don't say something soon. Ampere may be officially launched 17th September, but if you can't actually buy one until Christmas then AMD still have an in. TSMC's yields are glorious, so it could well be a case AMD are stockpiling for a real launch (that "show of force" which has been mentioned) with actually available cards on October 7th.

Risky tactic, but could work.

This is not like previous launches, we know whats going into the PS5/XBOX, many other board members have made some fairly safe assumptions based on that. These are much safer assumptions than the Vega launch.

The AMD performance should come in at 3080 level, AMD won't have a 3090 competitor before Cyberpunk launches - unless something bigger is currently hidden from view.

I am not expecting it to be cheap.

The exact same things were said before the Vega and Fury Launches. That this time it would be different. I hope it is, but, you can understand why people might not want to wait.

I am not expecting AMD cards to be cheap either. The TSMC 7nm is more expensive than the Samsung 10nm one, even if the Samsung one is a custom one for Nvidia.

Chump :D

Haha :D

I think Cyberpunk and the fact that I have waited so long is making me want the 3080 over the 3070. I mean it is like £180 extra.

I would have liked a 3070 Ti 16GB at £499 ideally, but that will probably be more. Shame they could not hit 3070 16gb at £449, that would have been very good. I recon AMD will though, maybe even do better than that.

Yea, I knew Nvidia would eventually go G-Sync compatible route, but it was a question of when. I also like going for whoever provides best bang for buck. Look at my sig and click the GPU history link, you will see I was exclusively with AMD for many years as they always had best bang for buck :)

At least we can have a laugh whilst waiting for the AMD reveal...

Yea I love these each time a new GPU is out. Haha.

Going to be fun when they make new ones for big navi soon :D

I understand where they are coming from. I just would not call anyone a chump over it though. That said I understand why people would not wait.

You are right AMD have not been delivering for quite a few generations now. On release they disappointed me with Fury, then Polaris, then Vega (poor initial pricing due to crypto). Navi was not bad though, but driver issue reports galore did not help. Though I have a feeling that big navi will be a good release. Just hope their driver team deliver so things are smooth sailing from day 1.

I also agree that AMD should have tried to release first. But better they don’t and make sure they have a smooth release than rush and **** it up.

AMD will have to improve price for performance quite a bit to make people regret their choice of not waiting. Let’s hope they can.

This gets trotted out every single time... bare in mind the people claiming yield issues also claimed the 3080/90 would be on TSMC 7nm.

So much hype around DLSS and RTX IO though I think people need assurances that AMD will have equivalent features.
We already know they do, at least in some form. They have sharpening and IO technology in the consoles. It would be unfathomable of them not to replicate this in RDNA2 cards.
