AMD Navi 23 ‘NVIDIA Killer’ GPU Rumored to Support Hardware Ray Tracing, Coming Next Year

I wonder if it would be a good idea to wait for 5nm AMD / Nvidia GPUs, that should improve the density significantly. 7nm EUV would help too.

The problem with RDNA 2 is that the density (so far) has barely improved at all, compared to RDNA gen 1.

On the plus side, it appears to be similar to the RTX 3000 series, in terms of transisters per mm.

So, just watched Jim from AdoredTV's latest video and he goes through some transistor density numbers that I found interesting.

He showed the density on TSMC's 7nm used for the A100 chip is around 65MT/mm2.

If that is accurate, it would mean Big Navi @ 505mm2 would have around 32 billion transistors :D

For comparison, RTX 3080 has 28 billion :P

It's true, the A100 has a hell of a lot of transistors (54.2 billion). 65MT/mm2 is probably the maximum that can be achieved right now on standard TSMC 7nm. It's quite a bit lower for the RTX 3000 series however, which is built with Samsung 8nm transistors.

I suppose it's possible AMD + TSMC could achieve higher densities for desktop GPUs than the RDNA 2 console GPUs. If so, it could give them an edge.

Fair enough, and its definitely a VRAM issue and not a speed issue? So if you had 8GB of extra VRAM your FPS would skyrocket up?

Now days everything is hooking into the GPU even discord.

I average 2-3 gig vram usage without a game even loaded. Most games I play will take it up to the 4-8 gig mark, but a few go up to 10+ gig, such as FF15. For a new GPU I would consider 8 gig the minimal now for my main rig.

Nope, I think they use the Peak power consumption in order to show how much the cards can be pushed up, with overclocking and under heavy stress load, and how much the PCB and its components can withstand the power consumption.

Gaming load can be anywhere between near the peak and 35-40% lower.

No game is going to push the card to anywhere near what some of those supposed loads that have obviously been generated using furmark or similar.

People here are proud of flying their green or red colours, and it's really, well, just sad.

Surely it's no more sad than someone flying their favourite football teams colours? Fans spend a lot of money to see their favourite team loose, even when there's no hope.

I don't like Nvidia. I'm hoping AMD bring out something with good performance because I like AMD. Why is it such a bad thing to like a particular brand?

I think this has been mentioned before, but AMD has achieved the highest transistor densities on the older GCN architecture, with GlobalFoundries 7nm fab. process, with the AMD Renoir 7nm APUs. These have 8 Compute Units.

With these APUs, they achieved a transistor density of 62.8M / mm². I wonder if this is possible with RDNA 2 desktop GPUs?

How to realise if you are a fanboy (acceptance is the first step to being cured).

1. You see everybody else as a fanboy for the other team.
2. If anybody makes a criticism of your team, they are a shill for the other team.
3. If anybody mentions any other team without mocking them, they are a shill for that team.
4. If anybody fails to clap and cheer your team, they are a shill for another team.
5. If anybody says they are not a shill for another team, but isn't on your team's supporters list, they are lying.

It's particularly sad in this sub-forum, the amount of unapologetic bias on display for all to see.

People here are proud of flying their green or red colours, and it's really, well, just sad.

Its getting so pathetic sometimes that I read a post and I can guess the username of who posted it, thats the level of fanboyism some posters have.

Some posters really need to look in the mirror, not holding my breath for it though.

He has a video showing a shorter 2 fan version

If everyone here is just a private individual I'll eat my hat ;)
