What film did you watch last night?

It’s probably a hype thing too.

That's what's odd, I didn't watch until quite some time after the hype died and had almost forgot about it, just put it on one evening when I was home alone. I'm definitely going to try again and drag the missus along for it this time, she really enjoyed Midsommar when I showed it to her.

Ava - A little bit slow in the middle but otherwise a good film. The action was decent and I like Jessica Chastain. 7/10

I’m not sure whether Alien or Aliens is better. I find that Alien is sublime until the ‘adult alien’
appears. From that point, it then becomes.... gosh, I’m going to say it.... a little dull *hides*

It’s the set-up in that film that is particularly amazing but I then lose interest at the end, every time.

Aliens is a bit more consistent in its delivery.

Both good films, but different styles yet in the same universe. Not many of those.... I guess Terminator 1+2 is the closest I can think of but those are more similar to each other.

I do like Alien. It's my 2nd favourite of the lot, and if it wasn't for that film we wouldn't have the rest :)

Do you guys ever get tired of having the same conversation every time anyone mentions watching one of the Alien movies in here?

No :p

There again, I do tend to skim read a lot so probably miss things unless it really grabs me at the time as something I want to reply to :)

Alien : 10/10
Aliens : 9/10
Alien 3 : 8/10
Alien Resurrection : 1/10
Prometheus : 7/10
Covenant : 8/10

I watched Alien3 again at the weekend and enjoyed it. Nails the atmosphere which is the raison d'etre of the franchise, same as Covenant, while not being quite as good as the first two.

I've never got my panties in a twist about Prometheus the way some people have. It's alright, still better than 99% of the sci-fi films that get put out, just not as good as the rest.

Never understood the hate for alien 3, really enjoyed it, sure the CGI alien in places looks horrendous now but the setting/ atmosphere was brilliant.

Alien 4 had a few good bits and held some of the same atmosphere etc of the first 3 but the prom/cov films just seemed to be from a different era/setting and ruined the whole alien mystery with rubbish.

My ratings for the alien films:

Alien : 9/10 - close to perfect suspense horror film
Aliens : 9/10 - close to perfect action horror film
Alien 3 : 6/10 - null and voiding previous film, poor cgi and just too grim, has good points though
Alien Resurrection : 5/10 - just too generic, poor casting and awful alien design
Prometheus : 6/10 - starts off quite well, but spoiled with too much BS that damages the alien lore
Covenant : 4/10 - looks good, but dumb in every way

A Cure for Wellness. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4731136/

I was searching for something that could deliver after having recently seen Hereditary and Midsommar, and this didn't disappoint.

I think one of its strengths is that it's quite a long film - though that may be simply down to my own preference. Well worth checking out if you like these sorts of psychological/dram/horror type of movies.

Is it me or does Jason Isaacs look very much like Daniel Craig?

I recently watched 'Death of Stalin'. Was better than expected and Jason Isaccs playing General Zharkov with a northern accent was genius.
I've met Jason Isaacs. He's quite scary (tall, loud, posh) although maybe that's because I spent the whole conversation trying to say how I work with a friend of his and thought I should just say "hello" (if you know, you know..) :p

I love the buffet line :D

Seems a tad harsh - especially compared to your scoring for Prometheus! So far I've only watched Alien Resurrection once quite a few years ago, but as I recall most of it wasn't at all bad. Admittedly it was let down by getting a bit silly towards the end, but it's hardly alone in that respect.

Oooo fun with the Alien rankings... although we have definitely done this many times before :D

My last go:

Right having seen all the films over the last few days here's my ratings - some minor tweaks to my thoughts earlier in the thread. If anyone cares :p

Alien - 8
Aliens - 8.5
Alien 3 - 3
Alien Resurrection - 5.5
Prometheus - 6
Alien Covenant - 5.5

Resurrection is quite fun but falls shy of being anything better than what it is - a B movie. I always think that ripley baby looks weird / off too. It was interesting watching the special features as 3 things were clear - the studio had a clear direction of what it wanted it to be (I.e action / mass appeal), the individuals involved wanted it to be less serious and the script for the ending had to be changed several times due to costs.
