What film did you watch last night?

Requiem For a Dream (2000)

It's hard to say that I enjoyed this film since when the story is of four people hitting rock bottom as a result of drug abuse.

I will say it definitely worth watching and has some really original visuals that really help convey the character's emotions.

Great work from all of the cast, particular Ellen Burstyn.

Just like the original Trainspotting, this is a film young teenagers should watch to see the perils of taking drugs.

Excellent 9/10

Certainly made me reconsider my clubbing lifestyle in my teens.

For like, a week at most. :p

Great movie though.

Riders of Justice - This was excellent. The tone was a bit weird but a refreshing change from the hollywood formula. Mads was great as usual but hats off to the rest of the cast too. 9/10

Sentinelle - Saw the trailer and thought it might be ok. I only chose to watch it because it was getting late and it was a short one, 80mins or so. What a load of tripe! Boring and trying to be overly moody. 2/10

Watched Riders of justice last night, agree, very good and one of the better films I have seen in the past year.

As others mentioned Foxcatcher has superb performances, Steve Carrell is truly amazing in it. The documentary Team Foxcatcher about the whole case on Netflix is even better than the movie, if anything Steve Carell underplayed how creepy Du Pont was.

Haven't seen the film but I watched the documentary last night after reading your review and really enjoyed it.

I'm surprised the story in general doesn't ring any bells for me, must haved missed this one or not paid any attention to it at the time.

Great, really glad you enjoyed it, it really adds a lot to watching the movie if you do ever watch it, but I do still think the documentary is one of the cases when truth is more interesting than a movie version (even as good as the movie is too.) I also think as good as Ruffalo is he doesn't totally capture the sheer charisma of Dave Schultz, a 'hell of a guy' locker room leader type, legit badass Gold medal winning wrestler, but not a bully in the slightest, arguably the opposite of a bully, a kind hearted family man willing to overlook some of Du Pont's curiosities to try advance his sport.

A classic case of money doesn't buy always happiness, even at the very top end like Du Pont, excessive money arguably contributed to his isolation from others and eventual downfall.

Smokey and the Bandit (1977) - 9 / 10

A goofy classic with non-stop action and a great soundtrack.

Reynolds is charming and genuinely funny as the lead in this simple and straightforward plot of rebels being rebellious just for the sake of it.

With a great support cast and plenty of American culture, it’s fun, fast paced and has great set pieces which get more over the top as the film progresses.

Sick note afternoon, so just watched some trash on the sofa.

First up, Greenland. Feels like ages since I watched a disaster movie....enjoyed it! Pace was generally good apart from being a bit too long. Ticked all the formula boxes. Maybe could have been more of the impending peril, but I actually liked that it was fairly free from melodramatic dialogue.

5/10, decent popcorn effort.

Next up - Life

Some good cast, but overall just a bit meh. The stupid name for the alien. The meh design of the alien. The ridiculous intelligence levels of it. The acres of plot holes.

I mean, you have a bunch of people stuck on a spaceship with an alien as your premise.....you're gonna have comparisons....all in all it just made me sad that no-one even tries to make good sci-fi any more, it's just this drivel.

3/10, probably a bit generous. Dragged on too long as well.

I'm not sure which film it was - maybe #2, but I especially liked the scene when Sheriff Buford T. Justice stands next to Reynolds at a burger joint and has a conversation with him. :D

Had a sci-fi night yesterday

Sunshine - 7.5/10 great visuals, good cast, good dialogue, no fancy tech - seemed quite plausible really. I hadn't seen it since release, really enjoyed it

The day the earth stood still - 7/10 I like Keanu Reeves, not the best actor but does his best and has a screen presence. I could watch every film he has made and be entertained. The film is good, but the way the US government/military approach these Alien visitations in movies BOILS MY BLOOD.......I mean would they really be like that in real life? I was very frustrated with the Sec of Defence (kathy Bates) great actor but the character really did my head in. I was glad she saw sense- a little too late though. Good film. Never seen it before so was pleasantly surprised. The ending was a bit abrupt though. I didn't quite understand why they ended it there, I guess it was to show us the start of our making amends, dunno.

Working our way through the Alien series, now reached the difficult Alien 3 (could never hope to better Aliens tbh) tough watch......

Difficult? A3 is amazing. It did a good job and creating the atmosphere of the first Alien film. Small group of people, no weapons, 1 Alien. The directors cut is the one to watch..

Haven't seen either for quite a while, but I did prefer the original :)

Alien 3 isn't a bad film on it's own. But the main problem with it is that it commits the cardinal sin of sequels: it invalidates the ending of Aliens. Ripley fights through Aliens to save Newt, and they, Hicks and Bishop escape. Alien 3 begins by killing off everyone she fought to save.
