Soccer sickies

I had our portfolio director clear all meetings for Monday morning involving anyone in my department, and have told everyone they can take the day off, or come in as late as they want. I've been giving people early finishes for the other matches as well. Any none football fans who've been providing cover got double the amount of early finish to use on other days to keep them sweet.

Team are happier for it. I'd hate to work for some pillock who makes a song and dance about "everyone being in bright and early". Get in the bin.

Yeah. Much better to let people do that want, when they want to within reason. Let them own their jobs.

As long as they appreciate it, it's much easier to ask people to go above and beyond on the odd occasion they have to.

I wouldn't dream of asking anyone to do anything on a Monday morning full stop unless it was urgent and if it's urgent it's probably my fault.

Exactly. It drives me up the wall when we have "accounting emergencies" where something just has to be done at 8pm at zero notice. We're not surgeons or firefighters, there's no such thing as an emergency for us. It just drives a culture of resentment and is at odds when the company stresses a reasonable work\life balance.

So if I can give people time off to enjoy a once in 55 year sporting event, and I balance it out by making sure the non-football fans benefit as well I'm all for it.

It's the Euros, not the World Cup. I honestly think it's getting blown well out of proportion because of the horrendous year that preceded it.

After nearly 4 weeks off work and asking to go back for the past 2 weeks, my boss finally says yes. I'm guessing most of the department is off on Monday. :p

This talk of a BH on Monday is ridiculous, no time to plan for it and as Boris said, it would be tempting fate (no need for an Italian team talk, just say look at these clowns they think they've won already). I thought a couple of days ago a nice option would be, if England win, make it a bank holiday in England next Monday 19th July. That way:
1) We know if England has won or not
2) Businesses get a week to plan for it
3) It coincides with lockdown ending, everyone can have a massive knees-up without restrictions rather than some poor lass with a mask round her chin trying to tell people they can only have six at their table and they need to wear masks when standing up.

First final we've been to in 55 years. You play as many games in the Euros as the World Cup now, and to be honest the standard of football is probably higher. Playing Panama at the World Cup was ridiculous. I don't think it's being blown out of proportion at all. It would be nice to win something.

Also, everyone in the department is getting something out of it. Not just the football fans. And I don't think being considerate about work\life balance should only apply when the football is on. I told the team to finish early one Friday purely because the weather was fantastic (rare for the North East). If you treat people well they'll be more productive, and you'll more likely be able to retain the high performers.

Trouble is, how can the mood of the country be improved if England win? The Roman emperors thought that gladiatiorial events'd keep the people happy but this only lasted for so long and after a few weeks, aftre England winning, the mood of the people might have darkened.

Well put it this way, the mood of the country will not be lessened if England win, so why dont we all just hope that we do and then enjoy the win and the feel good atmosphere afterward. The English are truly an odd bunch at times, its like we actively try and seek ways to be miserable.

Ok, probably best to leave it at that.

I sincerely hope England win it tomorrow, and those that don't get Monday off will probably just take it off anyway. It's been a miserable year preceding this; I wouldn't grudge anyone a party right now.

I also won't begrudge anyone a celebration following some football wins, but the abuse and general hooliganism needs to stop. Just have a good time without affecting the lives of others. We all need a pick me up.

My point was that if England do witn, the feel good factor and good mood of the country can only last so long. The Roman emperors knew that appeasing the people with gladiatorial events and the good mood of the people arising from a victorious general's victory parade could only last for so long In a more modern perspective, Engladnd winning tomoorow night can onlykeep the people in a good mood for so lon and keeping us in constant lockdown isn't helping the mood of the country.

Actually most people, according to polls, will miss lockdown.

On OCUK 45% of people said they will miss lockdown, which is actually under the average score in polls

Don't believe the media. Lockdown has been terrible for a lot of people, no doubt about it, but the majority of people actually like it.

Our kids school are starting at 10 on Monday instead of 8.30. A good compromise that allows parents (and teachers) the flexibility to let their kids watch the game without fear of them being exhausted in the morning.

It has helped keep the scum away. It's resulted in quieter roads due to fewer unnecessary journeys. A better time for wildlife and the environment.

Honestly what is lockdown currently? Apart from a long holiday I can literally do anything I did pre-covid. This current 'lockdown' really isnt an issue for the vast majority of the population.

The first lockdown, especially, was bliss. Being the only one on the train [not the carriage, but the whole train] to work in the mornings was amazing.

Now it's jam packed. Where did all these people go? I wish they'd go back there.
