Soccer sickies

I just don't get it, sure in the context of football, it's a big achievement, but for those who have no interest in football, it doesn't really matter in the slightest. I'm sure in some other sport, England have been winning world championships all the time and get no recognition, let alone a day off work :D

England won the Cricket world cup in 2019, surely a bigger achievement than a continental championship, nothing happened then? :p

I suspect its far more about the fact that much of the nation has been down about all the lockdowns and inability to get together with friends etc and have found the whole lockdown period for the last year and a half rather anti-social and restrictive, with not much to shout about and here would be something for the nation as a whole to shout about, something to be happy/proud about rather than sitting indoors in lockdown for the X number of months that we've done. Everyone likes and needs to let their hair down every so often and what better reason to let your hair down than joining the rest of the nation in celebrating winning a tournament for the first time in most peoples lives :)

Probably because football is a lot more popular than cricket..

"Confirmed TV figures just in for England v Denmark last night: A peak of 26.3 million & including Hub non-TV devices the peak increases to 27.6 million, making it the biggest peak football audience ever for a single channel."

Of course. But still, a bank holiday for winning a couple of games of football, madness.

As I say, I dont think the bank holiday is necessarily "for" winning the football, I think its really more a case that winning the football is an enabler for the bank holiday, theres no doubt imo that as a nation our people need something to be "as one" about and to just go nuts for a day and let loose after all the lockdown time, I really think winning the football would just be an excuse , if you like, for it.

Truth be told, I wouldnt be at all surprised if we end up being given the bank holiday whether we win or not. Its good psychology, good for the peoples mental health and good PR for Boris who has been a little under the cosh of late, if I was an advisor to Boris I'd be espousing that its a no-brainer on so many levels.

Oh god here comes the usual

"This doesn't impact me and I won't try and understand why others care about it!11"

As a Welshman I'll be backing England a lot more if I knew there was a bank holiday out of it. :p
Aren't you guys devolved? Why would your country celebrate our potential victory?

Aren't you busy giving out free university slots?:o;):p:)

Why not just a bank holiday for the end of lockdown then? Surely that's something we can all get behind, rather than wrapping it up in some nonsense about a group of LARPers doing well in their Fifa cosplay

I guess because winning the Euros is something more people can get behind, like I say...I think its an enabler, not many UK businesses would complain about a bank holiday to celebrate a once in a lifetime tournament win but some dullard moaning minnie businesses might complain about a bank holiday just for lockdown ending. Frankly, I really dont know why anyone would be against a bank holiday, why does it matter what its for, its a bank holiday !! People today just like to moan about everything

Heh, our team lead just made it very clear in our weekly standup that everyone is expected in work bright and early on Monday :D

Isn't that basically what football is?
Ours just agreed a later start.

I wonder which place is a better work environment?

If it was a once-in-a-lifetime tournament, then I could see that, but doesn't it happen every few years? It's also something which a large chunk of the population don't really care about. Unlike lockdown ending which really is a once-in-a-lifetime event(well, hopefully!!) and I'm sure the vast majority can agree with.

I'm obviously not against a bank holiday, it just strikes me as odd that winning a couple of games of football is seen as more of an occasion for celebration than the ending of 18 months of restrictions which have caused massive disruption to everyone and decimated the economy.

To be fair, we do have flexible start times, so I assume a few people will be taking advantage of that :D

I didnt say a once-in-a-lifetime tournament, I said a once-in-a-lifetime tournament win , I wasnt born in 1966 when we last won one ! but thats by the by, the point is, who cares why its a bank holiday, its a bank holiday, lets just be grateful about it rather than proving the world that the Brits do indeed moan about everything :D

It's weird how some people use words and seemingly have intelligence about certain subjects but are completely oblivious to popular culture, are you being deliberately ignorant here as to why you don't understand that almost half the country watched England play and a large portion of people think England winning is a hugely significant event? I have no interest in the England rugby team, but I wasn't complaining when some of them were Knighted for their efforts or suggested it's something most people don't care about

lol @ comparing something that is "truly once in a lifetime" to something that we have had happen three times already :p

I understand that it is significant. I don't understand why it is more significant than the permanent end of lockdown restrictions and hopefully a return to normality. It would be like throwing a party to celebrate that your broken toe has healed when you've just been given the all-clear from lung cancer.

One of those has had a profound effect on everyone's lives for the last 18 months. The other - regardless of how big a fan you are - has had literally no effect on anything (barring increased alcohol and football related item sales). Unless you've put money on the game then your life on Monday will be exactly the same as it was before, regardless of whether England win/lose or if the match had never even taken place.

So yes, I don't disagree it's a cause for celebration, but maybe some perspective is required.

Although previous lockdowns have been lifted, there have still been restrictions in place, and it has been on a temporary basis. Supposedly this time, almost all restrictions will be permanently lifted.

I personally dont think it is more significant, to be honest without double checking back on the thread I'm not sure anyone has said it is more significant have they? My own opinion is that on a personal level they are equally significant, however I also dont think it matters which (if either) is more significant than the other, all I care about is getting a free extra bank holiday. Something that we already have too few of in comparison with other nations and something which the nation can all get behind (supposedly) and enjoy the day.
