Back to the point of the imperial changes: utterly pointless. We should be looking at modernising and even converting to kilometres like most of the rest of the world, not going backwards in time :/

you could argue the same with language and we should switch to mandarin or spanish
English is only the 3rd most spoken native language

why not just strip out whole culture and identity away to go with whatever is considered "mainstream" on earth

It's more because the metric system just makes more sense. I use a mixture of inches / feet / cm / metres depending on what I'm doing. For precision I hate imperial though, 9/16 inches vs ~22 mm or 5/8 inches vs ~24mm etc - metric is just far easier to visualise and grasp (for me anyway). I hate betting but fractional betting odds are just so alien compared to decimal odds for the same reason.

I think it's a shame we're not more open to learning languages here. When I was at school all we could do was French or German. Most of my class just messed around so I didn't get to learn anything. Nowadays I really wish I could speak another language like Spanish to not look like the stupid Brit.

they should change the curriculum for language around whats popular with the young ages on netflix or whatever :P

like loads of teens watch anime, probably loads watch netflix series that are in Spanish or Portuguese.

no one cared about learning french what's the point so few countries speak it, German maybe a bit better but not much

I was also thinking that now we have things like Google Translate we probably don't even need to bother learning them now. It's an absolute game changer being able to point your phone at a sign or menu in another language and it instant translate.

Apparently French is 15th and German 16th most popular. Always thought French was more popular than that.

It's not a substitute over learning an actual language though and it doesn't help you learn faster.
if you were manually typing the word and looking the translation it's more likely to stick as part of your vocab

when I was using it 2 years ago it didn't seem that accurate the word translations would change depending on the angle of the camera etc.

I also found my self looking after a 6 year old German speaking girl whilst her mum way away doing the laundry elsewhere in the apartment block.

she was wondering where he mum had gone and I was trying to get the google app to speak out "your mum is doing the laundry. downstairs" and loads of other variations, she couldn't understand what I was trying to tell her at all. (not upset though her mum was my partner and the girl knew me we just couldn;'t communicate at that time)

I don't think the translations are good

btw the girl learned to speak near fluent english on her own just listening to me and her mum talking in a 1-2 year period, she barely asked what any of the words mean she just figured it all out by herself.

kids brains are amazing, also they can help you learn a language really fast much better than adults :P

Don't mention that to Macron apart from losing the plot over submarines he's trying to change the everyday language of teh EU from english to French despite most people in the EU not actually speaking french.

To me, socialism and it's like are based on an ideology of envy and naivety - "that man can't have become rich solely because of his own hard work (naivety), he must have screwed over someone lesser than him to get where he is and that isn't fair so lets take everything from him (envy)" etc. Happily and also conversely sadly, the real world isn't that black/white and that's where the childlike naivety comes in as proponents of socialism want to believe it really is that simple to fix complex economic and social issues by simply redistributing wealth because that's "fair".

It might be possible, I guess, but it's probably also extremely unlikely.

Most people who do become rich do so in part by engaging the services of others, and benefit both directly and indirectly from state-run infrastructure.

Some of them benefit from state-run institutions, again either directly or through their employees.

Plus whatever they borrow/ whatever investment they receive/ etc.

Is it truly naïve to imagine that there is not really such a thing as a 100% self-made man?

I'm also not sure what socialists you've been talking to recently who are advocating taking everything from the rich, because that sounds like hyperbole. Our current trajectory, by contrast, sees the 1% taking everything from the rest of us. And that's not hyperbole, it's where we're headed if we keep ignoring the ever-widening wealth gap, and the concentrating of all assets into the hands of the few.

Kids brains are like sponges, they just soak it up, plus they have no fear of looking like a mug if they say the wrong word.
My elder son married a German girl and has lived in Germany for over thirty years.
By the time his two sons began to be taught English in school at 8 years old they were virtually fluent, just by listening to their dad occasionally speaking English to their mother, who speaks English like a BBC newsreader, plus hearing their parents talking English to me when I was there.
They knew English so well, that when the teacher said that the negative of “I am” is “I am not”, one corrected her by saying, “You’ve got that wrong Miss, my English grandpa says “I ain’t!”
 
As you hate pensioners so much maybe you could (in the extreme) always just nip over to a Swiss clinic once you hit pension age, saving the Government having to pay for you and being able to use that money to pay for a families new playstation 10 :D

This is the sort of useful contribution one comes to expect from the most selfish generation the country has ever seen.
 
This country won't/can't improve whilst we cling to FPTP, such an out-dated system it should be consigned to the history books.

But we will keep using this most "British" of electoral systems, even whilst it guarantees the most toxic kind of politics imaginable. Neither the Tories nor Labour want to get rid of it. The Tories are the only party honest about that, tho. Factions within Labour have claimed to want to scrap FPTP, but when push comes to shove always vote to retain it.

Imho, almost everything wrong with our politics is a consequence of FPTP, including how disillusioned most of us are with politics in general. Labour aren't even a single party, that much is obvious. A loose coalition with wildly differing beliefs, forced (loosely) together by FPTP.

The whole thing stinks. But worse than that, there will never be a change, it will just continue to rot and stink the place up.

Or more correctly - the people who've already been working for 50+ years & paying tax for 50+ years shouldn't have their hard earned retirement destroyed just because the people who haven't worked for 50+ years and haven't paid tax for 50+ years are getting screwed by corporations who aren't paying enough in wages.

Again, making "pensioners" a single monolithic "The Richest Demographic" and working people "The Poorest" is as imbecilic as my post is when I say all pensions have worked and paid taxes for 50+ years, when many won't have, but at least I'm honest about how silly my post is, maybe you should be honest about yours.

Ok, some honesty:

1 in 5 retired households hold wealth of £1m+
11% of retirees live in poverty: half the rate of working age people, and one third the rate of children.

Pinning extra load on poor working age people ahead of wealthy retired is immoral. See the social care tax being added to NI (a table retired people don't pay, but minimum wage workers do).

Let's take that honesty one step further then shall we? In the the majority of cases, that £1m+ 'wealth' is just the value of their home (something they have no control over) rather than actual disposable income and as such they are not truly wealthy as the asset is not disposable at will - they need a home after all.
