Yeah you can come out, in the end, much like Y2K, Brexit and Covid, World War 3 proved to be rather an anticlimax :D

Give it another 2 weeks :D

In all seriousness I wouldn't call it over yet - not to say they couldn't renew them but Russia has shipping warnings in place in the Black Sea until the 19th and diplomatic processes have another 24 hours to run yet which Russia may or may not hold out to see the outcome of.

And that is just a small part of the US military transports on the move this morning...

Bit of an anticlimax but glad nothing happened in the end. Russia just needs to withdraw now.

There is nothing which committed Russia to last night - though weather/moon conditions were potentially optimal - could still happen any time until we see a significant drawdown.

The risk is still there, not much have changed... Orignal claims were that Russia was going to invade after the Winter Olympics (that's not till after Sunday) but that they'd brought it forward.

Supposing that were true, if you were Russia/Putin and the West had just announced when your H hour would be would you still stick to it?

Putin might well back down yet, he perhaps wasn't expecting as unified a response, the costs of doing what he might have planned/hoped to do have since increased. We don't know that he was pot committed to an invasion before but it seems highly likely that he wanted the option on the table and was likely more than prepared to use it.

For all their bluster, their foreign minister insulting people etc.. they're not in a great position, they might not have expected Germany to be on broad re: nord 2 getting canceled, they might not have expected the rush to supply additional arms to Ukraine or that the West would make it clear that they're supporting an insurgency there.

He could still invade but over the last few weeks the costs have ramped up for him significantly if he chooses that path, him withdrawing might well be a result of those costs tipping the balance.

I've never really understood Putin's demand for Ukraine never to join NATO - in as much as the current status quo in the East will always prevent it from doing so.

The Duma is pressing for Russia to recognise those occupied areas as independent. Ukraine can't join whilst part of it's land is occupied. With those areas being declared "independent" there would be one less barrier for Ukraine to join NATO.

We have not yet seen "the end". Everything is sti in place.

Putin is still pointing a loaded gun at his target and he still has his finger on the trigger.
