Does anyone on here remember back to the 80's when the Cold War was still going strong? Were Russia as confrontational, bullish and just plain deluded back then? I'm guessing reporting would be a lot different and much much less access to information.
I was too young to have taken much notice back then. I do remember being aware of Russia's nuclear weapons back then, and that they were very very bad. Being so young when I learned about them, it meant little to me though.
Yeah I grew up in that era, was a young teen watching the news about the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Storming of Ceausescu's Palace by civilians with AK47s, the fall of the Soviet Union, all of it crystal clear. I paid very close attention to it. Was always dubious about EU expanding so far east as Russia were always likely to want some revenge for lost territory.
Also this goes back a lot further to WW2 and Germany invading Russia, this is based on some old revenge from very old conflicts. Putin mentions it as much multiple times in his recent statement regarding this invasion of Ukraine.
In the 80's Russia were scary in terms of their govt but anyone visiting Russia would report that people loved the Western way of life and were good people, same as now mostly, but then had barely any decent goods, people would leave Levis jeans and Western music for the Russians they'd visit. A genius like the creator of Tetris couldn't make any money from their state owned creations. Reports of lifestyle at the time was barren stores and few, if any luxury goods. A far cry from the soft capitalism they adopted since then.
But they now have a complete idiot in charge who has guaranteed his own destruction. He could have carried on for 20 years if he hadn't committed this invasion. Men like Gorbachev were more reasonable with a lot more at stake.
Two sides to everything, but this will harm innocent Russians as much as anyone else, once more their people will arguably suffer the most of all due to their leaders.
