It's very common for military snipers to use old tried and tested rifle designs, the original ones may have entered service in the 19th century but they were still being produced/improved until the 70's. By comparison the two main sniper rifles the US use are both variants of a rifle from 1948 and their main marksman rifle is from the 1950s.
