All this talk of global powers makes being part of a federal Europe to keep up sounds really attractive right?
The speed which Europe managed to react to Ukraine makes me think the above is not necessary anyway - enough values are shared that Europe + UK will stand together against an appropriate threat right now anyway. If it was pretty much anyone but a nuclear super power in Ukraine right now the place would be full of EU/UK military force fighting on the side of what's right.

One ruble for the tank, one for the manager at the tank factory, 5 for the owner of the factory, 50 for the russian general who awarded the contract....

Their system was such a mess at the end of the cold war that it was routine for warehouses to have locks that required two keys to try and prevent theft by staff, and it's not really got much better in many ways, except that a lot of the theft has been higher up the chain, so stuff either never gets bought but is on the books, or inferior parts are substituted.

Apparently whole swathes of parts and equipment that is legally required to be made inside Russia entirely (so every part is Russian made) aren't, everything from screws and ball bearings, to Tractors (which it turned out were bought as kits from another country and only assembled in Russia), and when it is found out usually the manager of the factory is found guilty, whilst the owners and people who arranged it walk.

The theft (from the Russian mob up to each oligarch taking their cut) is actually part of Putin's system of control to ensure the military never threaten the state.

True. I'm looking into it as my house is becoming free in a couple of months as I'm moving in with my partner and I'm not looking into doing it to make a profit, as certain cynical posters infer people are doing, but I just couldn't afford to do it if it ended up costing me X hundred per month - especially as I've lost over 20% of my income recently anyway, thanks to Covid.

But I'm near Boston, which has a large Eastern European population and my best friends wife is Romanian, so I'm reaching out to see if they know any Ukranians that would be willing to help with the support bit.

Have a search around your area to see if there are any Ukrainian social clubs. They might be in the big cities.

I used to be a member of the Polish club in Manchester. I remember there were some eastern european social clubs nearby too. If there are any Ukrainian social clubs try and make contact with them.

That is relatively atypical of how protestors get treated in Russia... and probably due to being relatively high profile and somewhat connected.

Perhaps, could also just be confirmation that it was another piece of propaganda considering the potential imprisonment was 15 years, however if the Russian public thought that they'd only get a fine that doesn't make much sense to me from a state security POV. I suppose it would depend on whether her punishment is publicly available information.

It is unusual they aren't setting an example of her so could be propaganda but she does have some connections which might be saving her from a worst fate.

Yup, I don't doubt that there are also some non-famous people who are arrested then released/fined - I don't believe they're locking up loads of randoms for 15-year max sentences, but I suspect that quite a few more aren't released so quickly/are locked up for a bit longer then fined and/or face being assaulted by police etc..

Why are so many of Russia's tanks in Ukraine so antiquated looking, like cold war relics? They've had the best part of two decades to build new kit.

Is it the case they've just sent their second grade kit to Ukraine?
All the money for new military kit was spent on massive yachts and mock palladian villa's in Cyprus.

Russia is keeping the bulk of its modern and best forces out of this so far. My prediction is that as soon as these are committed to the fight in Ukraine -
You're living in cloud cukoo land. Russia has thrown everything at them and getting spanked and sent home to mummy in body bags.

Putin is furious at the inept and terrible invasion. His equipment has not been maintained, top level tanks are stripped of the armour that could keep them alive, they break down, get stolen by farmers in tractors, have no fuel to run them so they are totally inept.

He is do desperate he has had to go cap in hand to his pals in Chechnya and Syria to beg for troops and his pal in Bejing for military aid.

His best forces arent up to it simple as that.

I wonder how much inventory doesn't actually exist due to corruption?

Loads. There are reports of 'ghost soldiers', whereby the wages get paid but the soldiers don't exist - so all the money gets pocketed. Same goes for reports of huge bases in Russia that cost billions to build, man and run. There's just one problem though, they're completely empty and the funds are 'gone'.

she probably has some inconvenient photos as a get out of jail free card. The question is does she have enough?
