Ukraine's only hope was that either the government in Moscow changed or they'd enacted such pain that Moscow searched for a way out whilst being able to justify their actions.

If Ukraine continues to hollow out Russia's military and global image, Moscow will eventually resort to scorched earth tactics which any sensible government would acknowledge isn't worth it over the lesser pain of a compromise. To caveat, if the compromise is essentially the destruction of Ukraine through other means then it's obviously not going to be agreed to.

Crimea gets it water from a channel diverting water from Ukraine. After Russia annexed Crimea, the Ukrainian's dammed the channel so that they get more water for their fields, but Russia has had to ship water to Crimea as a result.

Same. That's what being a leader is about, making the decisions that sometimes seem bizarre to others but safeguard the lives of your citizens first and foremost. He'll probably be hated for it by some of his own people, but he may have saved them in the long term. You can't make peace with your friends.

No absolutely not. There was an interesting article somewhere after the U.S lost that F35 in the South China Sea about the topic. The fact being they probably already have the full technical info but it's not the same as having a actual unit with firmware/software to find out how the whole package works together.

They compromised on Crimea. If they didn't, this wouldn't be happening now.

If they hadn't, they wouldn't have had the 8 years since to develop their military into a force that can bloody Russia's nose. Ukraine had no choice on Crimea because they had no ability to kick Russia out of Crimea.

However they are used to launch cruise missiles so will stay out of theatre by quite a bit, they don't actually fly over the target and drop bombs.

And what do you think Russia will do after this? Regardless of outcome they will invest a lot of money going forward. Time favours the larger economy.
