One of the things I think western governments are going to have to get to grips with is fab plants. There needs to be some fab in western europe (there used to be some in what was east germany but i think its gone now)
Intels building fabs, they were planning to even before the war, they are building more in the USA as well, so the west isn't so reliant on Taiwan

SANTA CLARA, Calif., March 15, 2022 – Intel today announced the first phase of its plans to invest as much as 80 billion euros in the European Union over the next decade along the entire semiconductor value chain – from research and development (R&D) to manufacturing to state-of-the art packaging technologies. Today’s announcement includes plans to invest an initial 17 billion euros into a leading-edge semiconductor fab mega-site in Germany, to create a new R&D and design hub in France, and to invest in R&D, manufacturing and foundry services in Ireland, Italy, Poland and Spain. With this landmark investment, Intel plans to bring its most advanced technology to Europe, creating a next-generation European chip ecosystem and addressing the need for a more balanced and resilient supply chain.

UK was to cheap to bid on getting a plant as always, it would rather give money to tory friends etc than throw a couple of billion in incentives. unless it's amazon, apple, starbucks etc not paying their tax bills and wanting as discount

You could always just telagraph to your enemy that they are better off fighting you until the bitter end and see how many of your own soldiers the enemy takes with them on their way to hell.

If your goal is to *win*, getting your enemy to surrender is usually more efficient then killing every single one of them.

Heck in this case, just pushing them back toward Russia would reduce the enemy's logistic problems as it would shorten their supply lines.

Better to have them aurrender in place.

Thanks, I can worry less about that aspect then ;)
Although I suppose they would end up as high priority targets should it ever come to that

Hmm is that a signal - we're happy to shoot Putin before we get to the use of nuclear weapons? As russia can exist without Putin or the United Russia party..

It could also be a line for Poland if they think they will shoot some stuff back given Putin's false flagging, also perhaps a point to the internal areas wanting independence?

Its why its far better to seriously wound the enemy than to kill them outright.
They have the logistical issues to deal with many badly wounded plus the negative issue when they go home with the domestic audience.

IIRC it was the swiss who were trying to reduce the lethalness of their bullets.

It also puts those lines in range of attacks and with a more regular reload.

The Russians are not exactly known for tit for tat so who knows what they will do.

But the more you look at Russia's moves in the past few years, the more they want to intimidate and potentially use them e.g. 2018 presentation on new nuclear weapons.

If they launched a nuclear-powered missile and flew it around the Atlantic ocean for a few days I wonder how the West would respond.

I don't know the context of that statement but surely any country that has nuclear weapons has to say they would use them or the threat of mutually assured destruction is lost.

The only threat to Russia's existence will come from within. Ukraine or NATO aren't going to be sending forces into Russia so it will be up their own people to force a change if they aren't happy with being isolated internationally. You can't bomb your way out of sanctions.

See to me that says we can go kick them out of Ukraine or at least give them 48 hours to get out or else. Just make it clear it's about liberating Ukraine and not about invading Russia.

I don't interpret it that way because a big part of Putin's position is that the existence of NATO is a threat to the existence of Russia. I think he would interpret NATO (or any of the countries in NATO) liberating Ukraine as a direct threat to the existence of Russia. The fact that it isn't doesn't matter.

Besides, Putin has lied repeatedly and openly and not infrequently contradicts himself. It's part of his policy. So whatever he says is meaningless.

I don't know the context of that statement

(CNN) - Russian President Vladimir Putin's chief spokesman has conceded that Russia has yet to achieve any of its military goals in Ukraine and refused to deny that Moscow could resort to the use of nuclear weapons.

In an interview with CNN's Christiane Amanpour on Tuesday, Dmitry Peskov repeatedly refused to rule out that Russia would consider using nuclear weapons against what Moscow saw as an "existential threat." When asked under what conditions Putin would use Russia's nuclear capability, Peskov replied, "if it is an existential threat for our country, then it can be."

When asked what Putin thought he had achieved in Ukraine so far, Peskov answered: "Well, first of all, not yet. He hasn't achieved yet."

Yeah I wouldn't be too sure on his interpretation or the logic of it, or what the official Russian position might be vs Putin's intentions and actions - sometimes they seem to try and hedge between a saner position without directly contradicting him.
