3700x upgrade to 5800x or 5800x3d?

Maybe its one last upgrade on the AM4 platform? as Its doubtful we see any-more chips in the future for it. AM5 will need time; for fixes and prices to lower and for the memory to get better (since we have to go for DDR5).

Yeah its an RX6800. It works on my strix 570 F with both my old 3700X and 5900X. From AMDs website the requirements are :-

  • AMD 500 Series Motherboards​

  • Select AMD Ryzen™ 3000 Series Processors8​

  • AMD Ryzen™ 5000 Series Processors​

  • AMD Radeon™ RX 6000 Series Graphics​

 
I've been holding out for a second hand 5 series, but prices seem a bit nuts just now, e.g. there's a 5900x available on MM at £300 with next to no warranty when they're available retail at £30 or £40 more.

So, I'm buying today and it's a toss up between a new 5900x or 5800x3D. I'm gaming mainly at 4k 120Hz but dropping to 1440 if the game is needy in the grunt department. It feels like the 5900x with the extra cores makes more sense, particularly as it's less expensive.

Any final thoughts before I pull that trigger?

Are you purely gaming? It's a tough one. They're all good options. If you're doing any content creation the 5900X is a no brainer. If purely gaming then 5800X3D is quite impressive.

You'll mostly be GPU limited at your resolutions however.
 
Advertised as the best gaming CPU on the AMD side, so I went for the X3D in the end.

I don’t have any CPU intensive tasks or software, so a 5900X+ is really wasted in my PC. Throughout my PC ownership, I have only been gaming. If Intel and AMD bring out a pure gaming CPU line, this will be my go to CPU, which AMD has done in 2022!

So do you have any CPU intensive tasks at all that will require all those cores, etc?
