Find another dealer then, as that's the customer service you'd be getting if there's a problem :)
Feel like I've been to every one. I'm quickly running out of time, so I've just had to message my soon to be boss and let him know the situation I'm in. I travel to Cornwall on Saturday and return on the day before I'm due to start. Finding a car before then is becoming extremely unlikely. I'm making myself sick with stress.

Then just go see this, if condition is alright then offer them £1.5k and take it from there.

Toyota Avensis 2007 (57 reg) 1.8 VVT-i TR 4dr, 69k miles, 12month MOT, 1 Owner from new, Full Main Dealer Service History, £1,999
Location: NE3 4ND

That way, you're not spending a lot and still getting a decent amount of reliable car.

But alarm bells go off in my head when "sold as seen" is literally in the body of the description. It's like they know something is wrong and are declaring a way out of fixing it.

I pass this garage every day going to work. There's too much out there to sift through which is another part when time is now so limited.

Have found this too: https://www.tmpvehicles.co.uk/used-cars/hyundai-i30-1-6-premium-euro-4-5dr-gateshead-202206297277556

But look at the reviews and the dates they were all posted...

Sold as seen isn't a thing - if it's a dealer selling it, your consumer rights will apply, and put a deposit down in a credit card as extra protection.
Toyota Avensis with full main dealer history is likely as safe a bet as you can get.

Don't simply dismiss it because of that, it could simply mean it won't be profitable to them to do any repairs that may exist. Either way, it's a 1 owner, low-ish mile Toyota with full main dealer service history... go see it!

Just seen it. It's locked in an indoor showroom so hard to see but it looked OK. Nothing hanging off and it's 2 mins from work so will look tomorrow.

Looking at that i30 now too. Again can't get to it but looks decent from a distance.

Correct, but reading up on it, if there is a fault on the car when sold and it's likely I would have spotted it and known about it, then I basically have no rights. This is why I mentioned the "sold as seen". They're basically forcing the onus back on to me find faults. I'm extremely confident if I ask a salesmen "are there any faults" I'd just get the usual salesman ******** of "oh know, she's a beauty. Been looked after". What the writing says is "sold as seen", basically saying that fault or no fault, this is how you've bought the car, so if a fault appears a week later, they're saying the onus was on me to spot it and I'd have a hard time claiming my money back.

I know I'm a worrier and a cynical stress head, but a lot of it comes from intuition from past experience. Car salesmen (and I hate using a big brush against a large group of people) are infamous bull poopers. Add comission into the mix and anything will be done to make a sale. Generally speaking of course, I'm sure there are some lovely honest ones out there...

Not true at all

citizens advice said:
You won’t be entitled to anything if:
  • you were told about the fault when you bought the car - and someone fully explained what the problem meant
  • you inspected the car and should’ve spotted the problem, for example a dent
  • you caused the fault
  • the fault is normal for how much the car’s been used (known as ‘fair wear and tear’) - for example if the brake pads need replacing after being used for a long time

So e.g. you couldn't claim for a problem with the Clutch if you'd taken it for a test drive and didn't report it then.
You could however claim for e.g. gradual loss of coolant, as you couldn't have known this from a cursory inspection (Unless the dealer made you aware of this prior to the purchase.

Either way, it's only £1.9k for a low mileage, 1 owner, full service history Toyota with 12month MOT... definitely one worth the punt.

Or if you're so para just get an RAC pre-inspection thingy.

A dealer would know that there's no such thing as sold as seen in dealer sale. Having had problems with dealers in the past I'd walk away from it, it's just not worth the potential hassle, and that's despite me thinking an old Toyota is a good option.

What it boils down to is whether it can be proven that the problem was there when you bought the car. The advert doesn't state any obvious issues so they're selling it without any major issues as far as I'm concerned. It's on them to disclose major issues as they are the experts and the car has to be fit for purpose.

You have to wonder why have they written sold as seen when that doesn't exist, unless they're selling it as a private sale? It does say it's a p/ex car so I think it is a private sale.

RAC inspection is a good shout and there's also plenty left in the budget to fix stuff. Although if the head gasket etc has gone then it might be hassle. Dealers excel as hiding issues for test drives.

Still, I'd look at that black on black Seat instead.

That's exactly my point. Writing it has seeded loads of doubt in my mind and, coupled with the fact it's almost half the average cost according to Parkers and AT, it feels like they know they're selling a dog and want it out of their showroom with little chance of it being accepted back.
