Not paying your troops is asking for trouble, I wonder why Russia is having trouble with payments, they possess the Rubble currency so should be able to send it? No sanctions would prevent them using their own local currency.

Imagine fighting in a war and risking your life, in a conflict you probably don't want to be in, and not even getting paid for it?

Sounds like the bonuses are going into someone’s pocket.. generals/putin given putin was meant to be overseeing the current situation..

It's only a matter of time now before Russia go big or go home surely

A bad take from the US on this, they should very much be banning all Russians, the ones wealthy enough to leave the country are the ones most likely to put pressure on the government

I'm going to disagree here. Banning all Russians just lets the Kremlin propaganda spin things into a bunker mentality even more than they're already doing. Its more likely to motivate Russians to support what's happening than make them try and overthrow the mafia kleptocracy in charge.

The Biden White House has made their position clear all along: the war is the fault of the Russian leadership, NOT the Russian people. Much as we in the west would like a regime change, its unlikely to happen until there are too many people rebelling for the goon squads to keep throwing out of 6th floor hospital windows.

Conversely: letting Russians with education and/or skills come over to the West both weakens Russia due to the brain drain and provides the west with a motivated workforce. There's an old Russian joke along the lines of "So long as they pretend to pay us. we'll pretend to work" that has more than a vein of truth to it. There's some smart people there we could use and I think they'd enjoy not having to bribe every bureaucrat and official in a uniform to just function in their daily lives.

I disagree banning all Russians we are just shooting ourselves in the foot by losing tourism, Russian people are not blame for the war.

I would be wary of accepting things like that at face value, she does have a bit of a shifty *why are you talking to me about this* look about her. Folk know if they say the wrong thing over there they can lose their jobs etc. You see the same thing over here when peole get interviewed about transgenderism.

I guess all the intercepts of Russians speaking to their wives are fake as well

I don't doubt there's plenty of nasty people over there as those candid calls show, but I wouldn't tar them all with the same brush.

And by the same token, there's also candid calls from Russian soldiers complaining that they don't know why they're fighting Ukrainians or that they've no reason to.

There are indeed plenty who believe it but the problem for anyone in Russia is they can't trust that any conversation is private, so the only safe option is to regurgitate the kremlin propaganda regardless of your own thoughts.

EDIT: There's no need to ban the Russians who believe the propaganda, they won't want to visit the west anyway (give or take the odd bit of Cathedral sight seeing).

This is what really blows my mind with Russia... They have had decades of their own conflicts to learn from. |Not only that, they also have had decades of watching other conflicts and other nations make mistakes. Yet they have learned nothing, or have just chosen to blatantly ignore these lessons.
Instead they have just plowed on with old doctrine like its the only answer. From our perspective it just seems bizarre! We are still only ~6 months in, Russian tactics may very well work in the long run, but so far has just seemed stupid and wasteful.
I think it's more to do with Putins "we cant be beaten" attitude.

I do believe he thought that as the mighty superpower Ukraine would just melt in their presence and give up with barely a fight.

He would have taken Kiev installed a puppet like Luckashenko and pillaged the vast resources.

I didn't realise how vulnerable Russia oil ships currently are; they're spending long amounts of time in the Atlantic Ocean doing transfers from ship to another - imagine that, a billion dollar ships just standing still in the middle of the ocean for days, just ripe for pirates to come take it.
It wont go down well for anyone destroying an oil tanker causing hundred's of million off gallons of oil spewing into our oceans.

The international community would go nuts and turn on Ukrain for that.

Russia is an entirely different culture, it has been Westernised only slightly so we need to stop trying to project our own Western morals & values onto the Russians because they are completely different they may as well be alien

Russians don't even like themselves depending on which region they are from

But its the people who change the regimes.

Hurt them enough and they turn. The blame starts with the enemy but after a while it turns to anger at those in charge.
