Evening all.
I have some questions related to everyday driving. I am more interested to know what you do different than me or what you would do. These are all unofficial and I just wanted to sync my behaviour with what you all do.

1. Car ahead is driving slowly ( residential 2 way road ) > I sound horn quickly twice. If driver still does not increase speed, I will drive onto the other side of the road and overtake him by coming back to the correct side in front of him.

2. Drivers who go straight on a left only lane > 1 long horn

3. Drivers who cuts up everyone in a queue at a traffic light by driving down the wrong side > 1 horn

4. On a 3 lane dual carriageway, if I am on the right lane, and I am driving at the speed limit, if someone flashes me > Ignore and continue. On a motorway, if I do happen to find myself on the right lane, I will try to move to the middle lane as soon as it is safe to do so.

5. In a roundabout, if the car next to me is partially driving in my lane or about to drive in to me > 1 long horn

6. At a mini roundabout, if a car does not wait at the giveway line or drives in while I am going round > 1 long horn

7. Meet and greet situation in a residential road where it is a two-way road and cars are parked on both sides > If I am near the end of the road, I will reverse. If I am in the middle of the road or towards the front section of the road, I refuse to reverse all the way down the road , tell the other guy to reverse and switch off my engine.

8. If someone is driving at night with no headlights, use full beam and a long and loud horn

9. If someone is driving without headlights on a motorway, get in front of them and flash hazards a few times.

10. If on a motorway, there is traffic on the left and slow traffic in the middle lane but no one is in the right lane, and I move to the right lane and floor it. One of the daydreamers in the middle lane sees me and then comes behind me on the right lane and flashes me to move out of the way > Ignore him and keep going until I have gone past the slow traffic in the middle lane and can go back to the middle lane.

11. On a motorway, if someone comes in front of me at a car's length without indicating > 1 quick horn

12. On a dual carriageway, if someone comes in front regardless of distance > 1 horn

13. Anyone who jumps a red light > 1long horn

I think we've found the guy who's been honking at @tacticalx86

I'd suggest less use of the car personally.

Especially with number 4, it suggests he doesn't know how multi lane roads work.

I thought number 12 was particularly interesting! He'd be a nightmare in busy traffic, constantly beeping his horn everytime someone changes lane. Although he doesn't say if it's a short horn or a long horn.

Maybe he mixes it up a little, adds a bit of spice into his driving life. I wonder if he beeps in morse code.

Rule 112 of The Highway Code states:

'The horn. Use only while your vehicle is moving and you need to warn other road users of your presence. Never sound your horn aggressively.

You MUST NOT use your horn:

  • while stationary on the road
  • when driving in a built-up area between the hours of 11.30 pm and 7.00 am except when another road user poses a danger.
    Law CUR Reg 99'.

I reckon he should just buy a musical Dixie Horn & wire it directly up to the battery so it's on a constant loop & be done with it.

I've used the horn on my car precisely once, to honk at a friend crossing the road.

Honking at idiots doing idiot things is more likely to make them freeze and cause an accident

I agree with part of number 5, if someone is about to drive into me I'll sound the horn, but that's about it.

Almost all of them can be avoided by reading the road and people around you imo. Even if you are in the right, have right of way etc. best just to let them go. I've seen roundabout shunts where the either party has honked and caused the other to panic/zone out and continue to crash

Wow.

I don’t think I need to read any further to discover that you’re a dreadful driver, unsafe and shouldn’t be on the road.

I'd heard of gaming chairs&steering wheels for GTA, do they have horns too, sold by OC of course.

does seem a pity that with all the fancy indicators you now get on cars there aren't better ways for communicating unambiguously with other drivers via lights -
"stay where you are" vs "come through, I'll wait here"

I agree, defensive driving keeps you out of trouble, but sometimes, when you're boxed in and someone encroaches on you, it's the only option.

I drive a little mx5 which had a feeble horn as standard. I replaced it with a Nautilus air horn, commonly fitted to motorbikes, so small enough to squeeze into the mx5. A blast of the Nautilus gets people's attention!

All 'right' lanes in these scenarios are for overtaking only, you can't just sit in it no matter what speed you're doing.

If noise to make someone alter course is the answer, why can't you just alter course? Asking for a friend

Unless they are directly a danger to myself or another road user I don't sound my horn or otherwise remonstrate with someone not driving strictly to the highway code - they'll rarely if ever modify their behaviour because of it unfortunately. If it is particularly dangerous I might submit dashcam footage to the police via stuff like Operation Snap.
