The Witcher series (Netflix)

there doesn't appear to be any desire within the studio system to risk their financials on an untested new IP as it's easier to buy an IP with an existing fanbase and then thrown your untalented staff at it to make it work.
Pretty much this. Even if a new IP is greenlit, it's not getting the $300m budget of an existing IP. Look at Godzilla 2014 and Kong Skull Island. Directors often hide the movie they really want to make inside an IP they don't care about.

Stuidos don't care. Directors and writers are just climbing the ladder anyway. Unless you're D&D, having your name in a big project, even a bad one, can only help you.

They took the **** out of Cavill IMO, sidelined in his own show by a bunch of nobodies because the writers wanted another fem empowerment show like RoP. Whatever the reason for his departure, and whatever it really is he'll be diplomatic about it, but good on him for leaving.

It was crap anyway. That's the beginning of the end for the show.

Bit harsh, I have enjoyed every season. But then I could be one of the few who knows nothing of the source material.

I thought it was great. I have not read any source material outside of the Witcher 3 game. :)

Disappointing he is not continuing as he was pretty good in the role.

"Name for themselves"? They're still a bunch of faceless hacks. I wouldn't be able to name any of them without looking them up

I assume he means in the circles that actually matter to writers i.e. professional circles. I couldn't tell you who wrote pretty much anything of the past 30 years, good or bad.

I didn't think the first season was anything special but the second season lost me completely. Another one who has only played the game but there was almost none of the good story telling that the game had.

I enjoyed it and I've read the books and played the games. The games are different from the books and the tv show was different from both. That is part of an adaptation. I didn't agree with every decision but overall I thought the show has been quality so far.

Shame, won't be the same without Henry Cavill, he carried the show. But I don't blame him, turns out the writers and many of people working on show didn't like and actively mocked the source material. Which kind of explains season 1 and 2.

Well the writers can't make a name for themselves essentially copying the source material can they?

In this day and age, they get more work for creating a failure and failing upwards to the next project they destroy, instead of getting credit for creating a successful show that makes money. Hollywood is backwards land.

No Cavill as Geralt will be a killer for me. It's jarring enough to recast the main character 4 seasons in, but Cavill nailed that role.

I read all the books and am currently bored of the console-porty controls/mechanics in the second game, as the first was waaaaaaay more enjoyable.
Books not as enjoyable, and felt like there were a lot of cultural nuances that perhaps didn't translate so well, but still pretty easy reading overall.
First season of the programme was great, so changes for the different medium were easily overlooked. Second season only seen once but still seemed OK.

But really Cavill absolutely made that programme work. I like Hemsworth, but I too can't see it going any further without Cavill fronting it.

Seems superman going big again. Maybe everyone was reading too much into it
Look back at how obviously enthusiastic Cavill was going in (and on how he got the role), but also his determination they stick to the source material, and you can soon see there are likely ulterior motives here. You don't go that far to secure a part and then drop it for no reason. I also can't imagine Netflix wasn't paying decently considering he was really the main star power the show had, and it's been a big numbers show for Netflix.

Superman just gives him more incentive and reason to do what he has done.

Or he got the Bond role....

Pretty gutted when I read he was leaving, I dont mind LH at all but HC IS Geralt. Looking forward to season 3 anyway.

He's even said multiple times that he wants the story more true to the books, and the writers simply aren't going in that direction.

Honestly read the shenanigans he and his agent got up to to ensure he got an audition for the role, and it's pretty clear he really did want this role. He took a relatively low pay check (given his hollywood status) for the first season also, to help get it over the line (his wage went up 2.5x for the second season...).
If you've picked up a dream role, and are already making all the money you need, then you don't necessarily walk away even if other roles come around.

Simple fact is he was very clear from the start he wanted this to be true to the books as was originally promised; and is a fan of the books and games, so given the way the writing has gone, and the fact its come out many of the writing staff shouldn't be working on this IP, it really doesn't take much to put together why he is leaving, especially as its adding insult to injury over what he was promised and signed up for.
He may have other roles come up that the SITUATION are making more desireable to him, but honestly I think his decision to leave lies heavily on the writers and showrunners, because doing this was something he was obviously rediculously enthusiastic about, at least before it became clear where the show was going.

I loved the fact he was so into it, I think it actually showed in his portrayal.
