As ive said multiple times over the years, if you have a card with whine send it back as faulty and refuse to accept it as "normal".

When enough users inflict enough pain on the AIBS they will sort it out.

That doesn't always work, you can send a card back and some stores will say either its normal or its not excessive enough to warrant a replacement, then you get the card back and you're stuck with it. Sometimes they'll replace it but it seems to vary depending on where you bought it. You could get a replacement and have it be even worse than the original.

So had 30 mins to play around with the Gigabyte. It actually does look good in person, box is less premium if that matters. Coil whine? Yes its there but half what the MSI Suprims all were (and I believe that's the case for all Gigabytes judging from feedback), which is good enough for me. Added with the extra year warranty and £150 saving I'm happy.

One thing I have to check first though is the fans as they appeared to be all over the place from silent, to really loud all in a minute loading screen. I think I've read that its a fixable problem and maybe a conflict with Afterburner. As long as I can set and keep and custom fan curve I'll be keeping this one.

Edit; But overclocking coil whine was loud AF. I'll investigate fully tonight and make a decision..

I think the main take away from this now is for people with silent pcs and can hear coil whine, there is no 4090 without it. If you want a 4090 you are accepting one with that noise.

Knowing your not missing out by been "unlucky" helps a lot IMO. Just choose the card you like the look of the best, better warranty, better fans etc.

For me personally I'll be getting a 8th and final MSI card. The fans are just too good. I accept mild coil whine under heavy loads now. Hopefully next gen they will "fix" it.

Well, why not keep the Gigabyte Gaming OC and set a manual fan curve with Afterburner rather than switch to Suprim X which probably will have much worse coil whine?

And you say no 4090s without it? Are there actually any 3090s without it? Or do all high end cards have it its just the level of it.

I mean even the 3090 Ti Gigabyte Gaming OC I had had coil whine as all cards have it to some form as Hilbert at Guru3D says in the reviews.

But the 3090 Ti Gaming OC coil whine was so hush and faint in a closed chassis with 4 quiet 1000 RPM BeQuiet SW3 fans in a Silent Base 802 case.

And with case open and near card very easily audible, though much more tame than any 4090 I tried thus far and was even probably more tame than any 3080 Ti or 3090 I tried including eVGA and MSI.

I would be very happy with a 4090 with the hush faint whine that the 3090 Ti I had had.

Trying another 4090 Giga Gaming OC tonight from local Micro Center and hoping has least whine on all 4090s I have tried.

SO yes you can still be unlucky though all 4090s have it to some degree. The unicorns are just much less and low level at least that is what I believe? Or do you believe they all have at least moderate amounts or more of coil whine and some really bad and no such thing as a 4090 with the hush faint whine some high end cards had on prior gen?

I know coil whine can appear on any card, especially at high frame rates but there seems to be more talk of the suprim X having it a lot.

Still, the 3090 strix oc I had previously had coil whine and a fan rattle at certain rpms!

I personally believe there are no ones with no whine. Just some worse than others. People sword blind PNY had none... it did. People swore blind the Gigabyte had none.. it did.

There's a number of factors someone may believe there card is silent when it is not. Are they playing at native 4k? (DLSS takes it away) Have they got another component making noise masking it? (I.e case fan). Is there white noise in the room there playing in? Are they capable of hearing low frequency noise etc etc.

I could keep the Gigabyte but even in afterburner apparently it doesn't like been set between 1%>55% anything between there creates a loud ramp up. You can alternatively turn odd RGB to sort it apparently (maybe something to do with the RGB illumination who knows).

I just know with MSI all but the most intense workloads are completely silent and the intense work loads its dissapears when music is playing. So really it's only quiet scenes in high intensity work loads where you have a slightly lesser experience.

I wonder if Hilbert at Guru3D just got lucky unicorns 9 months back with the 3090 Ti cards he tested as the Suprim X he stated was hard to detect whine as well as the tuf and Gaming OC and some other 3090 Ti card in the reviews.

I had a Gaming OC the only 3090 Ti I had and it had very little coil whine and it was very hush and faint and hard to detect in closed chassis. With open chassis it was there, but the buzz/whine was much more faint and tame compared to any 4090 IU have tried including all Gaming OCs.
I wonder if the Gaming OC 3090 Ti I had was just a unicorn I got lucky with a good sample.

I have been unlucky with 4090s so far as none had near the tame whine that the 3090 Ti Gaming OC I had did and all were at least modestly louder. Though I have not had a severe screamer 4090 either that could be heard in closed case on other side of the wall in another room like some horror stories, then again I have avoided all but one Asus card and have not tried any MSI cards.

I had a suprim 3090 TI and it wasn;t feint by any stretch of the imagination. But it paled in comparison to the dark side of the force which was the 3090 ti strix liquid cooled I had. And if you though the 4090 were bad you have no idea what true coil whine is until you heard a Strix 3090ti LC version....To quote a fave line "Young fool, only now at the end, do you understand"...

That's probably a fair assessment. I'd find it hard to believe a GPU makes zero noise running at obscene frame rates.

I think there's a line where it can be too excessive though.

I think of you need to go out of your way to hear it, e.g mute game and put ear next to case then you've got a good one.

Years ago I had a 1080ti and I could hear it whining 2 meters away lol.

That's reassuring. I think given a choice I'd take quiet fans if it means having to tolerate some coil whine.

As I mentioned in my previous post, I had a rattle at certain fan speeds on the strix 3090. It was far more annoying than the coil whine.

I tend to use rivatuner and cap games at about 80fps so I have steady frame times so that should help lessen any whine.

My 4080 FE also whines when I overclock it (running it at stock for most games, will use the OC for Cyberpunk mainly). It also does occasionally whine at stock when changing scenes in Destiny 2 but then is fine again once loaded.

I agree that there do not seem to be any with zero coil whine, but this is already much quieter than my TUF 3080 was so I am fine with it.

Hello all! Been lurking this thread for the last few days so I decided to join just to share my experience.

Initially got a 4080 FE and had it paired with an RM850x as well as a RM1000x that I purchased in anticipation for a 4090. The 4080 FE was virtually silent under full load.

Managed to get my hands on a 4090 FE and have tested it on a RM1000x and a HX1000i PSU.

Unfortunately, the 4090 FE has some coil whine. Not the worst I have experienced but still disappointing to see on such an expensive card. I am currently running a 13700k, MSI Z690 Edge mobo, and a 3440x1440 @ 100hz monitor. With the 4090 I enable DSR at 1.75x which is some resolution I can’t even remember, so a majority of the time I am running the card at 99% usage.

What puzzles me is that my coil whine is completely different in every application. I’ve only had the card for a few days so I haven’t tested a vast amount of titles but here is what I have gathered..

Cyberpunk max settings with DSR @ 1.75x, DLSS Quality, Frame Gen on, psycho RT. This particular case produces the loudest coil whine in this GPU. I will link a video.

Hitman 3 max settings with DSR @ 1.75x, DLSS Quality, RT on the highest setting. Some coil whine, practically inaudible unless I mush my head right up against the mesh opening of my case and listen for a few minutes. Sitting just a few feet away from my PC I can’t hear it.

Battlefield 2042 Ultra settings, DSR @ 1.75x, RT on. Practically no coil whine that I can tell.

Furmark with GPU at 100% usage and I hear nothing, same goes for Timespy.

This is a very poor quality example but this is the coil whine when playing Cyberpunk. You can hear the difference when I leave the main menu and return to the game. And yes, my computer sounds like a jet engine. I plan on disabling all of my case fans to get a better capture of the coil whine when time permits.

Update on another 4090 Gaming OC I am trying from local MC now that they had stock after I had tried like 3 or 4 or even 5 before.

Probably the best one yet, but a little more whine than I would like, but reality is, probably about the best I can do unless I find a 1/1000 or even 1/1000 sample if it even exists.

One thing I did notice about this Gigabyte Gaming OC and maybe even last one though this one maybe slightly better though last 2 a little better than the prior ones I had, is they do kind of have a sharp buzz if you put your ear to side of open case where card is. but if you turn your head so you face it and ears are on sides, the buzzing noise is very faint compared to like any other 4090 including PNY cards. So almost seems like Giga cards in certain frequency or spectrum have it done much better than others.

And also if I put my ear next to open mesh can definitely hear the whine/buzz, but much modestly more tame than especially even a non bad Asus Strix or even a little more tame than PNY. But if I put my ear by a closed panel with sound dampening foam even with card under full load, buzzing is almost inaudible. so the sound dampening foam does a good job. Unlike Asus Strix and even to a lesser extent PNY have a bit worse noise especially the Strix.

However here is the problem. Despite the sound being quite good even with ear close to panel, when I am higher up in the air, Nosie is still faint, but is definitely more like a hush but still in background and annoying often but not always grinding like sound emitted.

I would like to sound dampen it more so that does not happen. I have a Be Quiet Silent Base 802 which is supposed to be really good with that. However even with sound proof panels including the top, the top in the back half has an open vent. I wonder if some escapes from there.

Does anyone know a case with better sound dampening than Silent Base 802 especially for the top?? I know airlfow will be not as good, but something that will not cook my PC. Like is Fractal Define R7 better sound proofing than Silent Base 802 even sealed for noises like coil whine/buzz. Or any other cases worth a look?

I built my new rig today in a define 7 XL and I can’t hear a thing.

Honestly so impressed with this case. I had a torrent before and much prefer the define.

It'd be so nice if you could buy one of the top models from whichever brand and know that while you're paying extra you're getting good cooling, quiet fans and very little chance of coil whine. If you buy the cheaper models or cheaper brands you take your chances that one or more of those won't be so good. A compromise.

But this situation where even the top models from the good brands might not cool the VRAM or whatever well, might have coil whine and might have noisey fans just makes it so hard trying to decide what to get.
I think I've narrowed it down to either the Gigabyte Gaming OC 4090 or the MSI SUPRIM X 4090 but I'm not sure there's a clear winner.

Wouldn’t disagre with any of that. Whilst I’ve not tried the
Strix OC, it seems like whichever 4090 you go with you are sacrificing something. Be it coil whine, fan noise/whine, short warranty, etc.

Yep definitely a compromise I guess its just finding the negative you are willing to tolerate the most.

For me I've settled on tolerating coil whine under heavy loads if all the other criteria is excellent (Especially fans).

Memory cooling isn't great on the Suprim X is it? (Although to be fair the review I saw was for the Liquid version, but I'd guess they're similar?)
