4080 & 4090 Coil Whine Thread

Dosn't help that the 4090 with the least coil whine this gen looks like a plastic budget £1699 card lol.

Why does it matter as long as it is most quiet provides great performance and is reliable and plastic does not mean its going to break when mounted inside PC case. The heck with RGB and aesthesis. They mean nothing to me!!

Between me, you @LtMatt @voodoochild2008 I dare say every 4090 has coil whine. We can't all be that unlucky.

Does that mean in reality all of them have it, just its the level of it that is different and ones that claim they do not have high enough speed fan to drown out noise or insanely insulated case combined with a card that has minimal faint whine or their hearing is not able to hear it or they do not count electrical buzzing noise as whine and think all electronic devices do it and only count the squeal as whine which is misleading as electrical buzz is most certainly a type of whine as it is from the4 coil/capacitors/indictors power being pushed through and not from the fans.

Because if I'm paying +1000 for a card I expect premium materials, quiet operation and RGB that won't trigger peoples epilepsy lol. Don't get me wrong though Nvidia are just as much to blame as the partners reducing their potential margin to very, very little. Encourages cost cutting all over.

I expect quiet coil whien free operation, quiet fans and durable VRM and long lasting PCB and grat performance. Not concerned if they use plastic or what material as long as it is safe.

Its not like furniture or a car where you are going to use it and it gets where and tear. Only wear and tear is the PCB and silicon and RAM chips and mosfets. Plastic gets no wear and tear as it sits.

I'd say that the main two factors are white noise in peoples rooms, the noise of their pc already and their ability to hear low level noise. No one that is sensitive to it has reported a completely silent card, with potentially the exception being the basic entry level Inno X3 4090 that has been discontinued.

It its in a closed PC case I get that, for many of us with "show case" PC's its the center piece.

That the ironic thing though. The cards that have the loudest whine i.e Strix and Suprims are using more premium components as it allows more current than cheapy cards. But the stupid thing there is this resin/glue that is used for damping components that are coil whine prone. I mean as you guys know if you hold a strix or suprims it exudes build quality and what not so that they have not skimped on for sure but damn how expensive is some coil whine glue? Bet you in the whole scheme of things it cost so little but would be priceless to end users.

I cannot bring myself to get the gigabyte OC it has more plastic than my little pony

Pretty much no options then, unless maybe there's a 4080 sku free of it. Pretty depressing.
Was talking to someone on reddit who had a 4090 FE with no coil whine but was paired with a psu im currently using which has coil whine. He said since he changed from a 3090 FE to 4090 FE the coil whine went away, using the same Asus Loki PSU as me.

Yeah so in summary
Suprim and Strix = Loud Coil Whine
FE = Poor fans (compared to the best)
Gigabyte = Looks like crap.
Zotac = **** fans
Palit, PNY, Gainward = Cut down PCB.

Yeah this is definitely a poor generation outside of performance.

I can confirm the FE has little coil whine... possibly because its in a metal case itself? But the fans aren't the best. Arguably the best of a bad situation.

That is the shroud and external casing and has nothing to do with power delivery components or current abilities on the Gigabyte. That is external casing.

But the Tuf, Suprim X, and Strix also do use higher quality power stages to at least for power delivery whine be darned, but a separate thing all together.

People generally said the PNY was quiet "not a peep" etc. That had low power stages, cut down PCB etc. It made a buzzing and had poor fans.

I think the thing also is when people say is is totally quiet are they playing at 4k with no dlss? Because if there not all mine have been near enough silent, outside of those conditions.

I have had 3 PNY XLR8. All had too much whine/rattling/buzzing under high load. Slightly worse than gigabyte Gaming OC 4090s but not as bad as Asus Strix 4090 though the Asus Strix 4090 to be fair was actually better than the Strix horror stories, but still sharper harsher buzzing/whine than the Gaming OC cards and PNY and Zotac. Dramatically worse, no. But more than just a little worse.

Want to find a 4090 with coil whine/buzz/rattling is as faint as the Gigabyte Gaming OC 3090 Ti I had was.

Interesting that Guru3D says all 3090 Ti cards except FE they had a hard time detecting whine on the cards including Gaming OC.

Though reddit begs to differ on the other 3090 Ti cards that Guru3D says they had a hard time detecting coil whine on, except OP says 3090 Ti Gaming OC is quiet and sure enough mine though not 100% whine free but very very faint far more so than even the Gaming OC 4090s which still have too much whine/buzz.

See everyone says the gigabytes have no coil whine yet you've had three with them? Think it just goes to show some are more sensitive than others, or their pcs are already loud.

I'm resigned to the fact my next and final 4090 will have coil whine unfortunately. Just going to go with the one that fits my build best.

Could I have just been really unlucky or most have them but not as bad as other cards and maybe a unicorn RTX 4090 Gigabyte would have as hush/faint of whine as the Gigabyte 3090 Ti. I mean the 3090 tis power usage is not much different so not sure why the 3090 Ti have almost no whine but 4090s are so much worse.

Every 3090 Ti in the review except Founders Edition they stated they had a hard time detecting coil whine on them Well the 3090 Ti FE review I cannot find anymore there which is the only one they had the coil squeal verbatim which they have for all 4090s and 4080s.

I mean if they could make 3090 Tis with almost no whine why the heck no 4090s given they use similar coolers and PCB were rumored to be a trial on 3090 Tis for the 4000 series. And power usage is similar unless you run the 4090s beyond 450 watts which none of my cards I have done on in fact at stock the power usage peaks at like 420 watts and usually 490 to 405 watts. And still my Gaming OC 3090 Ti had like such fiant whine it was almost impossible to hear with closed case in silent room with speakers off. Yet all 4090s I have tried have been very audible buzzing even in closed case under same conditions.

Just makes no sense.

Only real option for coil whine that works is to game work a headset on. It doesn't look like the situation is gonna get any better as cards draw more power. I recall a few years back when ocuk were selling their own cards they got a manufacturer to encase some of the components in some type of material and it cut down on the noise. @Gibbo any recollection on this?

It would be great if a card manufacturer charged a premium to eliminate coul whine. Think most of us in this thread would pay an extra 100-200 to get it sorted.

Heck yes. I hate coil whine and want a smooth sounding silent card. I would easily pay an extra couple hundred. Heck I would pay $1000 more. I want this to end and want a 4090 4K setup with like no whine. I have been ongoing this for 3 months now and sick of it and debating between just dealing with more audible whine than I want or going back to 3090 Ti.

If I just deal with more audible whine than I would like that basically leaves me only a Gigabyte or maybe PNY and completely rules out any Asus or MSI as at least Gigabyte is much more tame overall even if I cannot find one with the low super hush hard to detect inside closed case whine I want like my Gaming OC 3090 Ti was.
